For those who have taken various exams in their student period, whether they could succeed in this competitive society is the biggest exam.

In the midst of financial convulsion and massive layoffs, it is understandable that the majority of university students today think of their future job security as a pressing priority. Accordingly, they tend to think employment skills can be armed via university education.

It is especially true when we consider the fact that the cost of tuition and fees has been raising each year. To many students and their parents, pursuing higher education is very much like making a substantial investment. Thus, students and their parents alike tend to expect returns from the initial investment, hoping the returns would, to some extend, cover the money invested.

The idea that equipping students with employment skill may defeat the purpose of universities as educational institutions. Realistically, it would be very hard for university administrators and faculties to determine what technology or knowledge are needed in 3 or 4 years from now especially in some high-tech fields where updating and innovation occur on a daily basis. We all know that the student's innovation require complete understanding of fundamental theories in the relevant fields.

Universities, therefore, should construct core curricula that stress the fostering of employment skills while at the same time, providing students with electives on the fields they are interested in, which not only facilitates their understanding of job skills but also ensures their capacity to apply these skills.

Familiarizing with the equipment at an early age would lay a strong computer-based skill foundation for children's later careers and lives. Children should not be addicted in the virtual world.
