Making the Most of
Your Time at College

school is critical to finding a job, but you should start learning and
using this skill while you are in college.
DOUBLE MAJOR?
Should you get a double major? Only if you think it’s critical to succeed
in the particular field you are interested in. For instance, if you are keen
on counseling immigrants new to America, you might pursue an addi-
tional major in a language (Spanish, for instance). You may decide to
minor in English as a Second Language as another option.
The bottom line is that there’s not some magical combination of
classes/majors/minors for psychology majors. There’s just the combina-
tion that’s right for you and what you want to pursue.
Landing an Internship
Internships are a key way to gain experience and information.
Participating in an internship provides you with real-world experience,
making you more attractive to graduate schools or employers. If you
participate in an internship, you gain many benefits. First, the experi-
ence can help you fine-tune your career path. After participating in an
internship, you may end up saying, “Yes, this is something I want to do!”
On the other hand, the experience may end with you deciding, “I
thought I wanted to be a counselor, but I have no patience. This is not
the career for me.” It’s much better to find out this information now

rather than after you graduate and pursue all the accreditation, advanced
schooling, or job searching necessary to get you into a specific career,
only to find you’re not suited for it.
In addition to enabling you to “test drive” a career, an internship
gives you relevant job experience to include on your resume. You not
only learn more about that particular field, but you also gain a job ref-
erence. This leads to more benefits when you are seeking a job. If you
participate in an internship, studies have shown you are more likely to
find a job in that particular area, you’re likely to receive more job offers
after graduation, and you may receive a higher starting salary when you
do find a job.
You should participate in at least one internship during your under-
graduate psychology studies. You’ll find ample opportunities, as
described in the next section.
Sources for finding internships in general and specifically in psychol-
ogy include the following:
◆ Become a teaching assistant or take some role in a mentoring
capacity for other students. You can find these opportunities as
both an undergraduate and graduate student.
◆ Check out non-profit organizations. These organizations often
use interns as temporary staffing. To find non-profits, check out
online resources, look in the phone book, and check with the
chamber of commerce. See whether they have any internship or
volunteer opportunities.
◆ Look up the social services organizations in your area and ask if
they have any available internships or volunteer positions. Because
these organizations often have very small budgets, they often offer
internships and volunteer opportunities. Some example organiza-
tions include Domestic Violence Alternatives and Young Women’s
Resource Center.
◆ Check with your career center, which will usually have informa-
tion about internships available. Some psychology departments
require internships (practicum) and set them up for the students.
In addition to the department, look at the school level. For
instance, you may check into the school of science (if psychology is
housed within the school of science) for internship opportunities.

◆ Use your library and find one of the many guides to internships,
including The Internship Bible, Best 110 Internships, and Peterson’s
Internship Guide. Peterson’s Internship Guide lists internships by
field and includes general information, benefits, and contact infor-
mation. Unfortunately, the guide does not include a topic called
“Psychology”; for relevant internships try starting with the General
category under Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services.
◆ Visit Web sites to check for internships. You may look by area,
organization, or career. If you are interested in using your psychol-
ogy degree in connection with politics (as a lobbyist, for instance),
you may want to find an internship in Washington, D.C. Try these
sites: www.dcinternship.org, www.twc.org, and www.washington
internship.com. If you want to use your psychology major to work
with youth development agencies, visit the National Assembly,
which provides a directory of internships in these agencies (www.
nassambly.org).
◆ If you are interested in working for a particular company, check with
that company. Many company Web sites list internships. You can
also call the human resources department to ask about opportunities.
◆ Check with the career center or alumni association at your col-
lege. Many alumni have volunteered to be mentors, to provide
shadowing opportunities, or to schedule information interviews
about their career. Alumni are an underused resource. In addition
to mentoring and information, they may also be able to help you
find an internship.
SHADOWING
One way to investigate a career to see if you like it and to make valuable
connections is to shadow. Your school may have some organized shad-
owing programs. For instance, shadowing is common in medical and
dental school. Check with your career center to see if they have a list of
practicing professionals who are available for shadowing. If your career
center doesn’t have a shadowing program or list, you may need to make
the connections yourself. In this case, if you meet someone who has a
career you think you might like to pursue, ask if you can shadow him or
her for a day (or morning or afternoon). Most people are honored to
help, and if they say no, you can try someone else.
When shadowing, don’t interfere with the person’s workday and
schedule. Remain in the background, as an observer. You should, though,
at some time get a chance to talk to that person about that career. If so,
ask the person about the job. (See the list of questions for an informa-
tion interview below for more ideas about questions to ask.)
FINDING A MENTOR
Through information interviews, internships, and participating in
activities, you may be lucky enough to hook up with a mentor. A men-
tor is someone, usually a professional already established in a psychology
field, who takes a special interest in you and helps you make connec-
tions, writes letters of recommendations, arranges interviews and intern-
ships, and gives you advice on what classes to take or where to go to
graduate school.
Having a mentor can be like having a fairy godmother, so it’s worth
your effort to seek a willing professional to help you. You can find a
mentor by talking to faculty, perhaps through an internship, or through
the alumni office. Keep in mind that many alumni have signed up to be
mentors but are never called; this is an underused resource for finding a
mentor. Finally, you may simply identify someone whom you want to
model your career on and just ask that person to be your mentor.
