Duke Invitational Liberty Flames Invitational

Featured Athlete
Meet Preview:
This weekend the UMBC Outdoor Track and Field squad will split up the ranks to attend both the Duke Invite and the Liberty Flames Invite. The majority of athletes will head down to North Carolina while the throwers, pole vaulters, and decathletes will attend the meet at Liberty. The track will hold most of the action at the Duke Invitational. Last weekend Mercedes Jackson took the win the 100 meters and will look to continue that streak this weekend while getting help from Ebonique Jones, currently the ladies sit second and third respectively in the early season conference rankings. For the men, Sean Cooper dipped under eleven seconds for the first time with a 10.98, and will look to continue his success that has led him to fourth in both the 100 meters and 200 meters in the Conference. In the long sprint action, the women dominate the 400 meter Conference rankings with three women in the top four including Deborah Adelola, Kalane Abbey, and Kirsten Jones. The distance runners will be out in full force this weekend with most events under the lights on Friday. Andrew Smith will be making his outdoor debut in the 800 meters after finishing fourth in the Conference during the indoor season. Cody Mezebish will also run the 800 meters after finishing fifth in the event during the indoor Conference meet. Fresh off his first collegiate victory, Brandan McGee will toe the line in the 5,000 meters, while TJ Cowing should make an early season impact in the 10,000 meters. At Liberty, watch for Malte Bertram to make his decathlon debut for the Retrievers after finishing second in the Heptathlon at the indoor conference meet. Expect Aaron Brooks, Cameron McDearmon, Amanda Deller, and Chrissy Robinson to not only continue their well rounded success but have break out performances.

It didnt take long for senior Imani Colbert to better her school record that she re-set last year. As a freshman, Colbert came in swinging dropping the school record to 14.28 seconds. After a solid sophomore season, she didnt approach the mark until late last year when she busted out a 14.09 at the Conference meet. There was no dramatic buildup this year when in her second outdoor meet she dropped it to 14.02.

Athlete Spotlights

Brandan McGee:
One of the leading runners since he stepped on campus as a freshman last year, he led the Retrievers through the cross country season and put up a team leading mark in the 5,000 meters during the indoor season. Already sitting number three on the All Time 5,000 meter and number five on the All Time Steeple list, McGee will be looking to move up both over the next two weeks. Entered in the 5,000 meter run this weekend, he is coming off his first collegiate victory, stealing the 3,000 meters at the Maryland Invite, closing in a 2:09 last 800 meters to move up to number four on the All Time list.

Sean Cooper:
After training through last year, Sean Cooper has proved himself to be the leader of the sprint group during the indoor season, including qualifying for the IC4A meet in the 200 meters. He started off his outdoor campaign in grand fashion setting a personal best 10.98 in the 100 meter dash while putting up Conference level marks in the 200 meters and Long Jump.
