Dear Colleague,
We are pleased to inform you that the School of Microbiology, Mahatma Gandhi National Institute of Research and Social Action (MGNIRSA) is organizing a National Conference on Rediscovery of Importance of Herbal Plants and their Applications on 14rd - 15th September, 2012. Herbal medicine has become a popular form of healthcare. The consumption of plant-based medicines and other botanicals in the West has increased manifold in recent years. For example, between 1990 2000, an increase of over 380 % in sales in the United States was recorded. Global sales of herbal products, including herbal medicines, is already over US$ 1011 and is expected to exceed US$ 1012 in the next 20 years at the present growth rate. About two centuries ago, our medicinal practices were largely dominated by plant-based medicines. However, the medicinal use of herbs went into a rapid decline in the West when more predictable synthetic drugs were made commonly available. In contrast, many developing nations continued to benefit from the rich knowledge of medical herbalism. For example, Ayurvedic medicine in India, Kampo medicine in Japan, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Tibetian medicine and Unani medicine in the Middle East and South Asia are still used by a large majority of people. In the Indian context AYUSH i.e Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddhaa & Homoepathy is being accorded top priority for wholesome alternative medicine. While mixtures of different medinical plants are being used for treatment of various ailments there is a need to identify the active principle components of the mixture and study their anti-microbial efficacy both in vito and in vivo. With a view to provide a national forum for experts in the key disciplines of microbiology, biotechnology, plant sciences, cell biology, biochemistry, molecular genetics and medicinal chemistry to identify critical problems that may be best addressed using a multidisciplinary approach, the Conference is being organized. I request you to kindly participate in the conference with your fellow scientists and research scholars and make this conference a success. We look forward to welcome you to the pearl city of Hyderabad. With best regards and good wishes, Prof. P.P. Reddy Dean, Faculty of Science Dr. Adarsh K.Capoor Conference co-ordinator
