Memorandum

To: Irene Burk From: Amber Nielsen Date: September 14, 2010 RE: Proposal to Write a Med Tech Manual I am seeking approval to write a Med Tech Reference Manual that will be for use by the Med Techs and Nurses of The Legacy House of Bountiful. This manual will be used to train new Med Techs on job responsibilities unique to Legacy House. This manual will also be available for current Med Techs to use as a reference.

Current Training Method

Currently, potential Med Techs are trained using a general manual educating them on how to properly handle and dispense medication. This manual adequately prepares Med Techs on handling medications but there is no manual to educate the Med Techs on their other job responsibilities. Those responsibilities are currently learned during the training period.

Problems with the Current System

The current system is good at preparing Med Techs for the handling and dispensing of medications, but this manual is a general one designed for use in many assisted living facilities. There isnt a manual to train new Med Techs on Legacy House procedures. These procedures are briefly covered in Med Tech class and during the training period. This often leads to paper work and residents charts not being properly filled out or not filled out at all.

Objectives
The objectives of this project are as follows: A Better training method because more comprehensive training materials available. An increase in correctly filled out paper work and less time used to refill out paper work. Better interaction with Home Health agencies and Hospice Better care for dementia and diabetic residents

Proposed Solution
I propose that a comprehensive Med Tech manual be compiled. This manual will include a description of Med Techs job responsibilities; examples of paper work and charting forms and how to properly fill them out; and sections that detail how to handle situations that may arise that Med Tech will be responsible to handle when there is no management present. Also, this manual will have sections that explain home health and hospice agencies and how to properly work with them. And a since Legacy House has many residents that are diabetic and a unit spefically for dementia residents. There will also be sections that help Med Techs better understand those diseases and how to best care for residents that have those diseases

Method
I currently work as a med tech so the research that I will need to complete this manual will be minimal. However, I will interview other med techs to understand their concerns and what they would find helpful in a manual. I will also need to meet with graveyard med techs to become familiar with the responsibilities unique to that shift, so that they can be included in the manual. Also, for this manual I will be compiling all of the forms that we use as med techs. We have already met and discussed the forms that need to be included in the manual.

Schedule
The two tables below outline the projected schedule for completing the manual. The first gives the dates when documents will be submitted. The completion chart gives projected completion dates for each section of the manual.

Conclusion
This manual will be very beneficial for training new med tech and for current med techs to refer to when they have questions. Its use will help cut down on incorrectly filled out forms and unnessicary calls to management on weekend. The cost of this project will only be any printing and binding costs of the final document.
