PASSIVE VOICE

We must follow three main sentence into a PASSIVE one : steps when we transform an ACTIVE

1- The OBJECT of the Active sentence becomes the subject of the Passive. 2- The verb to BE must be in the same verb tense as the Active verb. 3- The verb of the Active sentence must be in the Past Participle.

ACTIVE
PRESENT SIMPLE Mike writes a letter. Mike writes two letters. The postman writes a letter. We write a letter. Tom cleans the car.

PASSIVE

A letter IS written by Mike. Two letters ARE written by Mike. A letter is written by the postman. A letter is written . The car is cleaned by Tom.

( The Subject of the Active sentence becomes the Agent in the Passive, but if the Subject is not important, we must omit it ). PRESENT CONTINUOUS Mike is writing a letter. Tom is writing ten letters. PRESENT PERFECT Mike has written a letter. We have cleaned two windows. SIMPLE PAST A letter WAS written by Mike. A letter HAS BEEN written by Mike Two windows HAVE BEEN cleaned. A letter IS BEING written by Mike.

Ten letters ARE BEING written by Tom.

Mike wrote a letter. Mike wrote two letters. We cleaned the window.

Two letters WERE written by Mike. The window was cleaned.

PAST

CONTINUOUS A letter WAS BEING written by Mike. Two letters WERE BEING written.

Mike was writing a letter. He was writing two letters. PAST PERFECT

Mike had written a letter. We had changed the present.

A letter HAD BEEN written by Mike. The present had been changed.

FUTURE Mike will write a letter. GOING TO He is going to write a letter. He is going to write two letters. MODAL VERBS You should buy a house.

A letter WILL BE written by Mike.

A letter IS GOING TO BE written . Two letters ARE GOING TO BE written.

A house SHOULD BE bought.
