Project 2 // Graphics and Design

This unit teaches students how to design, create and manipulate graphical products. The primary purpose of this unit is to teach students how to create appropriate digital content for a given project. Students look at how to design graphical products using templates and a wide range of applications which allow the creation of vectored and bitmap images. Students are taught how to use and adapt templates to ensure that the content is designed in a consistent way. Students look at the design of certain types of products and try to identify elements within the design of different publications. Students have the opportunity to design and create a wide range of digital content, including avatars, logos, cartoon strips, corrected photos and manipulated images. Students are taught the primary characteristics of the different types of images so that they are able to choose the application and file types that are the most appropriate for their intended end use. This unit incorporates a collective memory exercise whereby students are shown different elements of an image. Students evaluate images from each other and from external sources to provide feedback with regards to the good and bad characteristics of the image with feedback comments for development / improvement. Assessment for this unit is to create an image according to a design specification whereby students must individually select the most appropriate application and tools to design and implement a solution. All will: Plan, design and develop a range of computer graphics, exporting vector images into a usable format for use in other applications. They will be able to create or use templates from a range of applications. They will demonstrate an awareness of their audience when selecting images for use in publications and how their choice will influence the view of publication by users. They will demonstrate some awareness of the fitness for purpose of their choices and will select appropriate tools for the implementation of their designs most of the time. Some will: Plan, design and develop a wide range of computer graphics, exporting vector images into appropriate formats for use in a wide range of other applications. They will be able to create or adapt templates from a wide range of applications to suit the purpose of the publication. They will demonstrate a good awareness of their audience when selecting images for use in publications and will justify their choices with reference to how the image can be used to influence the views of their audience. They will demonstrate an awareness of the fitness for purpose of their choices and will consistently select the most appropriate tools and applications for the implementation and development of their designs. They will use feedback to help develop their work and will evaluate their work according to simple criteria.

Few will: Demonstrate an acute awareness of their intended audience and always select the most appropriate applications and tools to plan, implement and refine their work. They will give constructive feedback for the development of work and will always produce solutions which are fit for purpose and audience. They will be able to describe and justify the choices they made with reference to both feedback and the views of their audience.
