Community honors
Love with dedication
By MELISSA DIPENTO
The Voorhees Sun
Those who knew Tom Love
well said he poured his heart
and soul into his family.
He and his wife, Susan,
raised four kids in Voorhees
Sarah, Emmalee, Tylor and
Stephen.
When his sons picked up
baseball at a young age, Tom
was first in line to pitch in.
An accomplished athlete
himself, Tom received many
accolades while playing bas-
ketball at Camden Catholic
and later at Quinnipiac Uni-
versity in Connecticut.
Tom was an extremely ded-
icated father, who was always
interested in coaching his
kids, said Voorhees Police
Capt. and Gibbsboro Voorhees
Athletic Association president
Lou Bordi. He was one of
those people anything you
needed at the fields, he was al-
ways there.
And after sharing much of
his own time with baseball
and the community, residents
found their own way to honor
Tom, who died on April 9, 2011,
at the age of 51, after having
been diagnosed with lung can-
cer just three months prior.
Late last month, more than
500 people came out to the Ra-
binowitz Complex to officially
dedicate the 10-, 11- and 12-
year-old baseball field as the
Tom Love Memorial Field.
Tom Love Sr. threw out the
first pitch to kick off the be-
ginning of the baseball season.
The family was also presented
a plaque in Toms honor.
Susan said the event to
honor and celebrate her hus-

Family battles to help find cure
By MELISSA DIPENTO
The Voorhees Sun
Mark Friedenthals family is
no stranger to battling Lym-
phoma and Leukemia.
His wife, Donielle, lost her fa-
ther to Lymphoma nine years
ago. Donielles grandmothers
both died of Leukemia/Lym-
phoma, as well.
And although Mark and
Donielle learned there is no evi-
dence of heredity in blood can-
cers, they havent stopped fight-
ing to find a cure for the millions
of people touched by the diseases.
Donielles younger sister Sonia
has also been active with the
Friedenthals efforts to bring
awareness and raise money for
Leukemia and Lymphoma by par-
ticipating in Light the Night and
other local events.
As Mark got more involved
with fundraising efforts, he
began to reach out to his friends
in the office. He quickly learned
that everyone at Friedenthal Fi-
nancial in Voorhees knew some-
one who had battled or is still bat-
tling Leukemia and Lymphoma.
It was eye-opening to see
everyone at work. There are vari-
ations of blood cancer and it af-
fects a lot of people, Mark said.
Because of his familys efforts,
Mark recently learned he was
nominated by the Leukemia and
Lymphoma Society, New Jersey
Chapter for the Man/Woman of
the Year award.
Mark said seven men and
seven women have been nominat-
ed for the statewide award. In its
three-year history, no one from
South Jersey has ever received
the designation.
Nominees are charged now
with raising money to help find a
cure, a task Mark said he is happy
to take on. The family is looking

Man of La Mancha
hits the stage
The Fusion Performing Arts
Center presents Man of La Man-
cha April 13, 14 and 15. Man of
La Mancha tells the story of the
mad knight, Don Quixote, as a
play within a play, performed by
Cervantes and his fellow prison-
ers as he awaits a hearing with
the Spanish Inquisition.
Set in a dungeon, the prisoners
become involved in Cervantes
tale of Don Quixotes adventure.
The show features a cast of teens
and adults from Cherry Hill,
Voorhees, Haddonfield, Mt. Lau-
rel, Berlin, Lawnside and Cam-
den.
Tickets are available at
www.fusion-pac.org or at the cen-
ter. Fusions production of Man
of La Mancha will run at 7 p.m.
on April 13 and 14 and at 2 p.m. on
April 15 at Fusion Performing
Arts Center, 1040 Voorhees Town
Center.
Coppelia performances
on April 14 and 15
The Voorhees Ballet Theater
will raise the curtain on our pro-
duction of Coppelia on Satur-
day, April 14 at 2 p.m. A second
show will be held on Sunday,
April 15 at 2 p.m. Shows are at the
Voorhees Schools Theatre, Holly
Oak Drive.
This comedic ballet is about
the story of the lighthearted ro-
mance between Swanilda and
Franz and their relationship with
the eccentric toymaker, Dr. Cop-
pelius, and his unusually lifelike
doll, Coppelia.
Is she a real girl or a doll?
In the fanciful toy workshop of
Dr. Coppelius, its hard to know.
With its dancing toys, eye-
catching costumes and a delight-
ful score, Coppelia the Magic
Doll is a ballet that will entertain
audiences of all ages.

band was surreal.
She said she was especially
touched when Toms friend and
fellow baseball coach Sam Ger-
shenfeld gave a moving speech
about her husband, and when 11-
year-old resident and player Matt
Kempter belted out the National
Anthem prior to the game.
Mayor Michael Mignogna, as
well as many other local digni-
taries, were also on hand to cele-
brate Toms life and help dedicate
the field.
Mignogna said he met Tom
more than 40 years ago, when
their paths crossed while playing
basketball in high school.
Tom will be remembered, not
for how he died, but for how he
lived. Very simply, Tom Love was
one of the good guys, Mignogna
said. He made the world a better
place and he will be missed. His
memory will live on and his spirit
will remain alive in the joy of
kids playing baseball on Tom
Love Memorial Field.
Bordi, who has sat on the
GVAA board for the last eight
years and who has served as the
leagues president for four years,
also has kids the same age as
Toms.
Their children met playing
baseball in the league, giving
Bordi the opportunity to get to
know the Love family.
He was a constant figure in
the complex. Hes not a screaming
coach. He was an easygoing guy
who tried to make it as good as he
could for the kids, Bordi said.
Hes the kind of guy fields get
named after for who he was in the
community.
The field dedication ceremony
was bittersweet for the Love fami-
ly, but Susan said she and her
children felt honored by the out-
pouring of community support.
It was so hard to look at the
field and hes not there, Susan
said.
When Tom died last year, the
family asked for donations to im-
prove the field.
The GVAA agreed to establish
donations in Toms name and
would use the money to supple-
ment the upgrades the township
could make to the field, including
changes to the scoreboard, signs
and fencing.
The fund continues to live on,
Susan said, in the hopes of being
able to do something special for
the 12-year-old team each year
the last team Tom coached.
For more information on how
to donate, visit www.gvaabase-
ball.com.

6 THE VOORHEES SUN APRIL 11-17, 2012
The Voorhees Township Committee is
joining municipalities nationwide in de-
claring April as Alcohol Awareness
Month. Founded by the National Council
on Alcoholism & Drug Dependence
(NCADD) 26 years ago, the purpose is to
draw attention to the problems related to
alcohol abuse, particularly those that affect
our youth.
The following facts must be shared:
More than 23 million people over the age
of 12 are addicted to alcohol.
Approximately 11 million Americans be-
tween the ages of 12 and 20 are binge
drinkers and consume five or more
drinks in a row on a single occasion. This
statistic includes 2.1 million heavy
drinkers who consume five or more drinks
on the same occasion on at least five differ-
ent days.
Approximately 8 percent of our coun-
trys eighth-graders, 25 percent of 10th-
graders and 32 percent of 12th-graders
have been drunk during the last month.
The use of alcohol and other drugs is as-
sociated with the leading causes of death
and injury among teenagers and young
adults from such tragedies as motor vehi-
cle accidents, homicides and suicides.
People who begin drinking before the
age of 15 are four times more likely to de-
velop alcoholism than those who begin at
age 21.
Alcohol use is
implicated in one-
third to two-thirds
of sexual assaults
and acquaintance
or date rape cases
among teens and
college students.
Alcohol is impli-
cated in the deaths
of approximately
85,000 Americans
every year, making
it the nations
third leading
cause of preventa-
ble death after
smoking and obe-
sity.
Health risks of drinking alcohol include
increased incidence of cancers of the liver,
esophagus, throat and larynx, as well as
liver cirrhosis, immune system problems,
brain damage and heart problems.
Children who learn about the risks of al-
cohol from their parents are 50 percent less
likely to consume alcohol.
Use of alcohol by older brothers and sis-
ters influences the alcohol use of younger
brothers and sisters, particularly brother
to brother and sister to sister.
Sons of fathers with alcoholism are four
times more likely to develop alcoholism.
According to New Jerseys Childhood
Drinking Coalition (NJCDC), alcohol re-
mains the drug of choice for our youth.
The NJCDC offers the following tips in
communicating with our young people
about the pressures associated with under-
age drinking:
Establish a clear no use message for
underage children.
Talk to your children about alcohol and
drugs.
If you think your children are drinking,
they likely areaddress it now.
Limit alcohol at your own parties since
children are watching.
Set rules. Voice them and follow them.
Curfews work. Enforce them.
Know the whereabouts of your children.
Refuse to provide alcohol or allow those
under 21 to drink in your house.
Secure and monitor any alcohol you
may have in your home.
Together, we can help keep our children
safe.

MAYORS MESSAGE
in our opinion
W
hile virtually no one antici-
pates property values to
skyrocket anytime soon,
there are signs that the housing mar-
ket is beginning to get back on its feet.
Prices are up. Sales are solid. And
while foreclosures and short sales will
keep a lid on prices for some time, it
appears the market is moving in the
right direction. A report from The As-
sociated Press cited the National Asso-
ciation of Realtors point that Febru-
arys sales pace was the second high-
est since May 2010.
So what does that matter? Obviously
it matters a lot if youre buying or sell-
ing a home. But, even if youre not,
your homes value affects how you
handle your budget.
From a practical side, a higher
value might allow you to tap into your
homes equity. You might spend that
extra cash on home improvements, for
example, which helps to boost the
economy.
A homes value also has a psycho-
logical impact. Even though your
home might not be on the market,
there is a sense of security knowing
that you have your homes value to fall
back on if times get tough. That, in
turn, might prompt you to feel more
comfortable about buying new furni-
ture, taking a vacation, etc. Again, all
of these things help to spur the econo-
my.
To issue an all is well with the
housing market proclamation would
be premature. The aforementioned
distressed properties will continue to
be a burden. Credit is still tight. Inter-
est rates remain low, but could rise, sti-
fling a robust recovery.
But, hopefully, the days of watching
your homes value plummet are over,
or about over. The economy is showing
signs of growing albeit at a modest
pace. The reports indicate that more
people once again are looking at home
ownership as they feel better about
their employment status.
All of which is good news for home-
owners.
Home, sweeter home?
The numbers show that the real estate market might be stabilizing
Maybe the worst is over
Its not yet time to pronounce the
housing market as cured, but recent
reports indicate that it perhaps has
stabilized. Thats good news for both
homeowners and an economy that
continues to grow.

APRIL 11-17, 2012 THE VOORHEES SUN 11
While many schools will develop programs that prepare
students for the real world, Regis Academy Charter
School students will be immersed in it. Our unique and
innovative approach to deliver curriculum moves be-
yond in-class problem-based learning and immerses
students in what is called a "MicroSociety."
In a MicroSociety program, teachers, students, parents,
business partners and community members collaborate
to create a functioning society within the school, and in-
tegrate that experience into the traditional curriculum.
Children learn to run businesses, apply technology, de-
velop economy, replete with taxes, property concerns,
income diversity and politics.
