Bachrodt awarded with a library makeover

School will receive $100,000 renovation from Target Stores

appy new year from everyone at Bachrodt! The students and staff have returned to school energized and excited for the second semester at school. The students were excited to hear that the canned food drive that took place during the holidays was a huge success and 5 bins of food were collected. Currently, the student council is coordinating a Pennies for Patients coin collection drive for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Students collect spare change for 3 weeks and donate it to the LLS to help children with blood cancers. The goal this year is to collect $5000 a true testament that kids can make change! The students from the folklorico classes held a special performance at school on Friday, January 27th. Students from all grade levels participated and it was wonderful to see how much the students are learning from these classes. The new session of enrichment classes will begin in February. HEIDI WOLCOTT Vice President, There will be art, choir, folkBachrodt PTA loric dancing, tap and ballet classes offered. The students are excited! Please mark your calendarson March 24th, we will be holding an e-cycling event at Bachrodt. We will be sending out more information with specifics as the date gets closer. The biggest news that was delivered at the beginning of the year is that Bachrodt is the recipient of Targets $100,000 library makeover grant! The renovation team from Target has been meeting with staff and students to figure out what the students needs are and how to make the best use of the library space for everyone. Along with the renovations, Target will donate $5,000 in books to the library. Additionally, each student will receive 5 books of their own to add to their home library. Needless to say, this is extremely exciting news for Bachrodt! The library will be closed from February April and the grand re-opening is set for the beginning of May. More info to come as progress is made and we surely hope to see you at the new library soon! Until next time, Heidi Wolcott

Wheres Our Park?

In the late 1990's, representatives from the Rosemary Gardens neighborhood participated in a plan that would provide guidelines for future development of the area bounded by highways 101, 880, and 87. This plan became known as the Rincon South Specific Plan. One of the features of the plan was a five acre park stretching along E. Gish Rd. from N. First St. to N. Fourth St. The park was to be a major focal point for recreation for Rosemary Garden residents and for nearby future high density housing residents. In 2007, representatives from the neighborhood participated on the North San Jose Taskforce (NSJT) which gave input on future development in the area bounded by highways 101, 237, 880 and the Guadalupe River. As a result of those meetings, the City of San Jose Parks and Recreation (PRNS) and City of San Jose Planning Department (CSJPD) recommended that due to logistics the Rincon South park should be relocated. PNRS suggested the park be moved to an area roughly bounded by Air-

port Blvd and Skyport Blvd. with Metro Drive dividing the park. Unfortunately, with the development of the Matrix Casino, the idea of creating the five acre park appears to have been dropped. At the 2010 Matrix community meeting, the CSJPD and the Matrix architect appeared to be perplexed when asked about the park. Neither individual knew about any planned park for that area. The question about the park and the concern that the neighborhood was not informed about any changes in the plan were presented to Councilmember Liccardos representative at the last neighborhood community meeting, but no response was given. At the September NSJT meeting, which, unfortunately, no one from Councilmember Liccardo's office attended, the location of the Rincon South park was raised once again. Matt Cano, PRNS, Administrative Services, stated, "I seriously doubt there will ever be a park in that area." Joseph Fota Rosemary Gardens Representative North San Jose Taskforce

Street Sweeping
Dont forget neighborhood street sweeping is every third Tuesday of the month. Please have your car off the streets between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. The next two street sweeping days are Feb. 21 and March 20, 2012. One parked car equals nearly three car lengths of space that cant be swept because the street sweeper must leave room to avoid it. Street sweepers drive around piles left in the street to avoid rocks or other unseen items that can damage their equipment. Questions or complaints about your street sweeping? Call Customer Service at (408) 535-3500 to get more information about street sweeping.

New Bag Ordinance Begins

The City of San Jose adopted a ban on plastic bags ordinance in 2010 to reduce trash and help alleviate City creeks of plastic litter. This ordinance will soon take effect Consumers - bring your own reusable bags to the grocery stores, shopping malls, etc to shop green. For more detail on the ordinance, visit the Citys Bring Your Own Bag website. Retailers - take the necessary steps for your business to comply with the ordinance requirements. Be sure to use up your supply of plastic and non-compliant paper bags. If you plan on selling 40 percent recycled content paper bags, the City has updated the list of Recycled Paper Bag Suppliers. The list now includes information on which suppliers offer small quantities. Questions? Email Bring-urBag@sanjoseca.gov or call (408) 534-BYOB(2962).
