Vocab chapter 12 & 13 1. Motivation- a need or desire that energizes and directs behavior. 2.

Instinct- a complex behavior that is rigidly patterned throughtout a species and is unrelated. 3. The idea that a psychological need creates an aroused tension state that motivates an organism to satisy a need. 4. Homeostasis- The ability or tendency of an organism or cell to maintain internal equilibrium by adjusting its physiological processes 5. Incentive: a positive or negative envirmental stimulus that motivates behavior 6. Hierarchy of needs- maslows pyramid of human needs. 7. Glucose- form of sugar that circulates in the blood that provides major source of energy for body tissues. 8. Set point- point at which individuals weight thermostat is supposedly set. 9. Basal metabolic rate- the bodys resting rate of energy expenditure 10. Anorexia nervosa- eating disorder where person diets and becomes significtlly underweight and still feel fat. 11. Bulimia nervosa- eating disorder where person over eats then expels or does excessive exercise. 12. Sexual response cycle- 4 stages of sexual responding. 13. Refractory period- resting period after organism, during which a man cannot achieve another orgasm. 14. Sexual disorder- problem that consistently impairs sexual arousal or functioning. 15. Estrogen- sex hormone secreted in greater amounts in women than men. 16. Sexual orientation- an enduring sexual attraction towards members of either ones sex. 17. Flow- completely involved focused state of consciousness. 18. Industrial-organizational psychology- the application of psychological concepts and methods to optimizing human behavior in workplaces. 19. Personnel psychology- subfield of psychology that focuses on recruitment, selection, placement, training, appraisal and development. 20. Organizational psychology- psychological that examines organizational influences on worker and satisfaction and productivity and facilitates organizational change. 21. Structured interviews- interview process that asks the same job-reliverent questions of all applicants. 22. Achievement motivations- a desire for significant accomplishments: for mastery of things people things, ect. 23. Task leadership- goal-oriented leadership that sets standards. 24. Social leadership- group-oriented leadership that builds teamwork, meditates conflict and offers support. 25. Theory x- assumes that workers are basically lazy ,error prone and extrincally motivated b money. 26. Theory y- given freedom and challenge workers work hard to overcome the challenge. 27. Emotion- feeling psychological arousal 28. James- lange theory- experience of emotion is our awareness of psycholical need.

29. Cannon-bard theory- emotion stimulus simultaneously triggers psychological responses and experience of emotion. 30. 2- factor theory- to experience emotion one must be physically aroused and mentally aroused. 31. Catharsis- emotional release. 32. Feel-good, do-good phenomenon- people tendency to be helpful when they are in a good mood. 33. Subjective well being- self perceived happiness in life. 34. Adaption-level phenomenon- our tendency to form judgements. 35. Relative deprivation- one is worse off than the other.
