Garden Workshop
You cant get much closer to the earth on Earth Day
than by studying mycorrhizal fungi. Everyone is welcome
to this by donation event, Enlivening your Relationship
with Mushrooms, hosted by Lardeau Valley Seed Savers
on April 22, 1 pm to 3 pm at the Lardeau Valley Hall.
Features local mycologist, Peter McAlister, presenting
a slideshow and discussion of his successes and failures
with wild and domesticated species: culinary, medicinal
and garden mushrooms, identifcation of our local wild
species in the Kootenays, and particular emphases on the
benefts of mycorrhizal fungi in the garden.
Tis workshop is the last in the winter series presented
by LVSS. Weve learned how to enhance our gardens
through nutrient recycling and pollination. Now join avid
gardeners to learn how mushrooms help, or just come to
identify the species out there. At each of our workshop
weve taken away practical ideas and materials. We may
take some fungus from this one.

Rideshare Site Up And Running
Road transportation is responsible for 46% of the aver-
age Canadians greenhouse gas emissions. Te average
yearly cost of operating a vehicle can be as high as $8,600
a year or $23 a day. Traveling together and sharing the
movement of goods not only saves money and is more en-
vironmentally sound, but can help your neighbours and
possibly connect you with new friends.
Te Kootenay Rideshare has become a community in-
stitution for informal carpools and one-time trips. Te
program is administered by the West Kootenay EcoSo-
ciety as a means to reduce greenhouse gasses and single
passenger vehicle trips. With CBT Community Initiatives
grants from New Denver and Silverton, the North Slocans
Healthy Community Society teamed up with the West
Kootenay EcoSociety to enhance the Kootenay Rideshare
website. Te improvements have made the site more user
friendly for everyone, and it has some specifc elements
to help users who reside outside of Nelson. New features
include the transport of goods, maps, and a flter to elim-
inate inapplicable rides. It is no longer necessary to read
through the long list of people going everywhere.
Tese improvements will make the site easier to use, and
I hope they will help people fnd rides all over the region and
the province, said EcoSocietys David Reid. We are hoping
for another round of improvements to improve access on
the fy for smart phone users, and to promote the site so it
sees even more use. Te Nelson city council will consider a
Community Initiatives Program grant for the Rideshare site
in April. To use the site, visit www.kootenayrideshare.com.

Keep Your Tax Dollars
From Funding War
Over 1.5 trillion dollars is spent each year
by governments worldwide on militaries
and war. If you want to work for peace and
are interested in learning how to keep your
tax dollars from supporting war, attend the
Peace Caf hosted by Selkirk Colleges Mir
Centre for Peace and Conscience Canada
at Selkirk Colleges Castlegar campus on
Tursday, April 19.
Event organizer, Anna Kirkpatrick says
people have been approaching Conscience
Canada wanting to learn more about the con-
cept since BC southern interior NDP MP Alex
Atamanenko introduced his private members
Bill C-363 an act respecting conscientious
objection to the use of taxes for military pur-
poses to parliament late last year.
Kirkpatrick says she is personally op-
posed to having her hard-earned dollars
used to fund the military. I want to dedi-
cate my money and my time to creative,
constructive, peaceful solutions, Kirkpat-
rick notes. I cannot, in good conscience,
allow my tax dollars to fund the military.
Mir Centre for Peace Chair, Randy Jan-
zen adds that the face of war has changed
over the years and the secret to resisting it
now lies in the fnancing of it.
A few generations ago they conscripted
our young men, Janzen says. War has
changed. Now they need our money more
than our young people. So the notion of
conscientious objection has changed. If we
dont believe in war to solve our problems,
we need to stop contributing fnancially.
Instead we need to redirect our money
to fund practices and research that utilize
nonviolent strategies.
Te timing of this peace caf coincides
with the upcoming deadline to fle our in-
come tax, Janzen added. At the event Mr.
Atamanenko will speak about his bill, fol-
lowed by two short documentaries: Death
and Taxes, and Conscience Canadas own
short flm, Work for Peace, Stop Paying for
War. Te evening will fnish with an op-
portunity for questions and discussion.
Te Peace Caf starts at 7 pm, with ad-
mission by donation. Refreshments will be
served. To learn more about Selkirk Col-
leges Mir Centre for Peace, visit selkirk.ca/

HfHWK accepting Applications
Te West Kootenay Af liate of Habitat for Humanity
(HfHWK) started of in 1996 with a couple of Nelson locals
who wanted to build Habitat homes for low income families.
It took about two years to get organized, obtain charitable
status and become an of cial af liation of Habitat for Hu-
manity. Many volunteers were gathered, and by July of 2000
the frst home was ready for the selected family to move in.
Since the beginnings, nearly thirteen years ago, Habitat for
Humanity West Kootenay has built a total of three homes in
the Nelson area, including one duplex. Trough these homes,
a total of four families were given a hand up. HfHWK is now
accepting new family applications for a 12 year old 3 bed-
room duplex in Nelson uphill between Sunday, April 1 to
Tuesday, May 1 2012. Applications are available at: www.
habitatwk.ca, Share at 612 Lakeside, Nelson Community
Services at 518 Lake Street or RHC Insurance at 601 Baker.
For more information email: info@habitatwk.ca, mailing
address: 809 - 622 Front Street, Nelson, BC V1L 4B7 or call

Looking For Volunteers
And Overdue Equipment
Tose who experience a sudden illness or accident are ofen
lef stunned by how quickly their lives have changed. A car
accident, a sudden slip, or a heart attack can leave a person
helpless in a home built for the able-bodied. For the elderly,
afer hip or knee surgery, a broken bone, or the onset of de-
bilitating disease, everyday tasks can become unmanageable.
Te Canadian Red Cross,
Health Equipment Loan Program
(HELP) is a volunteer-driven,
community-based program that
provides essential medical equip-
ment to individuals on a by do-
nation basis. Making this med-
ical equipment available to the
public has many positive impacts
in the community. First of all, ac-
cess to this equipment supports
the independence of clients (pri-
marily seniors), enabling them
to remain an active part of their
community, and thereby increas-
ing their health and well-being.
Secondly, public access to this
service reduces long term facil-
ity placements, facilitates hospital
discharges, and supports people
who wish to spend their fnal days
in the comfort of their own home.
People in the community can
only access this service if there
is a volunteer available to help
them. Tree hours a week can
make a world of diference to
someone in your community. We
have various positions available;
from client support to equipment
maintenance and depot deliv-
eries, full training and support is
provided.
Volunteer support is critical in
order to continue providing this
essential service to those who
need it and so is having equipment
available to loan out. Many depot
locations are short of equipment
and are fnding they are having to
put people on a waitlist because of
equipment not being returned and
not having the inventory available
for the next person.
Spring cleaning? Make your frst priority to return any
equipment that you may have borrowed, there are many
people on a wait list who need to borrow this equipment as
part of their recovery.
For more info, please contact the Castlegar Canadian Red
Cross of ce located at 1250 26th, Street in the old Kinnaird
Middle School; at 250-365-3911 or 1-800-761-0099 ext 102
to ask for more information on how to become a volunteer
or for nearest location to drop of your loaned equipment.

KCR Presents.....
An evening with David Barsamian on Saturday, April
14, 7:30 pm at the Self Design Commons (402 Stanley
Street) in Nelson.
David Barsamian is the founder and director of Al-
ternative Radio, the independent weekly audio series
based in Boulder, Colorado, and has helped change the
media landscape in North America. Alternative Radio
is an internationally syndicated program carried by 125
radio stations, which has aired on Kootenay Co-op Radio
since the stations inception in 2000, and was the model
for KCRs long-running program Canadian Voices.
David Barsamian will speak on Uprisings: Kashmir to
Cairo to Wall Street.
He has interviewed and authored books with Noam
Chomsky, Arundhati Roy, Howard Zinn, Eqbal Ahmad,
Tariq Ali, and Edward Said. His best-selling books with
Chomsky have been translated into many languages.
Barsamian, who had visited India many times in the last
40 years reporting on conditions, learning Urdu and play-
ing sitar, was deported on arrival in New Delhi on Sep-
tember 23, 2011 and prevented from carrying out sched-
uled interviews in regard to the thousands of recently
discovered unmarked graves in Kashmir.
Tickets are $10 for Kootenay Co-op Radio members,
and $12 for non-members, and are available at Otter
Books and Kootenay Co-op Radio in Nelson. Seating
at the venue is limited, so advance purchase is recom-
mended. All proceeds go to Kootenay Co-op Radio.
For more information, call 250-352-9600 or visit www.

Gently, on March 29, 2012, Isabel
Butler slipped away and came to the
end of a long and full life. Born in
Nelson on September 5, 1921,
Isabel spent her entire life in
her beloved Kootenays. In 1904,
her father William (Tim) Lane
and paternal grandparents left
England and settled in Nelson.
Her mother, Mabel Margaret
Wilson, also from England,
arrived in Nelson a few years
later. In 1914 Tim and Mabel
were married in Nelson and in
1917 they moved to Ainsworth,
spending their rst seven years in
a rustic cabin on the beach, from
which they operated their livery stable
business.
A few years after Isabel was born, her
parents moved to their permanent ranch home
on a bench above Ainsworth, which was known
as the Good Luck Claim. The Lane ranch, cut out of
virgin wilderness, was complete with ower gardens, orchards,
hay elds, a dairy herd, and market garden, which augmented
the familys dwindling cartage business. For a time during the
depression, the Lane family operated the Silver Ledge Hotel in
Ainsworth, where Isabel claimed she learned to be the fabulous
pie maker she became.
In 1941, Isabel married Walter Butler, whose family had settled
in Kaslo in 1900. Like her own family, Walts family were dedicated
gardeners, and Walter and Isabel created beautiful gardens together,
even in the inhospitable landscape of Zincton, where the family lived
for 10 years while Walt was the mine assayer and Isabel had her
rst four children, Barry, Janice, Marguerite and Carol. The family
moved to Kaslo in 1952, to a property across the lane from Walters
family home, where Isabel had two more children, Paula and Dean.
She also grew and preserved a huge fruit and vegetable garden and
for many years won top honours in Kaslo ower shows.
In later life Isabel worked in the Kaslo
Post Ofce and became very active
in community life. She served as
an alderwoman on Kaslo Village
Council for four years and as Mayor
for another two, was a founder
of the Kaslo home support services, and a
key contributor to the efforts to restore
the SS Moyie, serving as the Chair
of the Moyie Restoration
Committee over several
years. During those
busy years, Isabel also
helped to launch the
fundraising to build the
Abbey Manor and served
as a local marriage
commissioner, holding
many happy weddings in
her own home and garden.
She loved and took much
pride in her community, her
family, her home and her
shing boat, in which she
spent many hours on the lake
she so loved.
Isabel is survived by her loving
sister Mabel Stainton of Nelson,
daughters Janice, Carol and Paula, daughter-
in-law Lesley and sons-in law Keith, Rick and
Christian, grandchildren Michael, Rebecca,
Theressa, Robert, Paul, Megan, Lise and Jennifer,
and great grandchildren Jacob, Erika, Soa,
Brendan, Jasmine and tiny Estelle, whom her proud
parents Paul and Josh had hoped to introduce to
great-grandmother Isabel this spring. Over many years,
Isabels life was enriched by a large extended family, and
many wonderful nieces and nephews. Her family is
deeply grateful for the compassionate care she received
in her nal years from home support workers and staff
at the Victorian Primary Health Centre. A memorial
service and celebration of Isabels life will be held in
Kaslo on May 12, 2012.
In honour of Isabel, an early planting of annuals
would be a lovely gesture. She especially loved
sweet peas, which she would pick when she
went out into her garden at the crack of dawn
to harvest the best of the day, the coffee brewing,
the lake sparkling in the distance and an early
morning north wind promising clear skies
and a perfect summer day.

Are you
building
this year?
New construction within the Regional District of Central
Kootenay requires a building permit. A building permit is
required before commencing any building construction,
addition or alteration project including placing manufactured
homes and installing swimming pools, as well as modifying or
adding to plumbing systems. All building permit applications
are reviewed for health and safety related design details, as
regulated by the BC Building Code. This can save time and
money through the construction process.
Applications for building permits are also reviewed for
compatibility with land use regulations relating to the
Provincial Agricultural Land Reserve, foodplain management,
and Regional District zoning bylaws.
Applications for permits and other information can be
obtained at the Regional District of Central Kootenay
Building Inspection of ce nearest you, or online at

Did you know that black kittens are the last to be adopted?
Thats what has happened to sweet Jilly Bean, and on top of it,
she has a medical condition that requires pills (easy to give in a
pill pocket) and special food for the rest of her life. Even though
she is a wonderful kitty, quiet and loving, spayed and vaccinated,
she has been with KAAP for over 6 months. We are hoping that
someone will open their heart and home to this special girl. Her
adoption fee will be waived. Call KAAP at 250-551-1053 or visit
www.homes4animals.com for more details.
