Key questions 1. popular : over the years, Spanglish has become highly popular among people of Hispanic origin because they see it as a way of preserving some cultural and linguistic heritage. Origin : it may be explained by the fact that many people of Mexican Spanish origin live in the US and prefer to speak both at the same time : English and Spanish. 2. Firstly, as he was born in Mexico, we can guess he is a staunch advocate of that new form of language. Then, he admires it and mainly those who manage to switch from one language to the other. He is persuaded that Spanglish is a creative language spoken by different ethnic minorities who manage to make up/invent/coin new words and thus to combine 2 worlds, 2 cultures. Next, he also feels that Spanglish could become a real new language because not only has it roots and past but it will have also to play and it will play a new significant role in future: a way of integrative into the American society and a way of differenting themselves from American-born citizens. Lastly, the author calls Spanglish the language of the uneducated people. This means that he is deeply aware of the danger/drawback of always speaking it. People will have to overcome obstacles insofar they cant master English and whats more as they keep speaking Spanglish in their everyday life, their mother tongue Spanish will become some a substitute for it. 3. The consequences of Spanglish in the US are that Spanglish can lead to a form of isolation, exclusion. If yon can speak and write English fluently, you will make it. But if you always intertwine the 2 languages, this implies some form of illiteracy (analphabetism). Those people who speak Spanglish cant realize the impact of it on their lives. Indeed, they cant speak either language very well and more and more people will be able only to communicate with some groups and will never climb the social ladder. So they will never be able to open wide the door to the American dream, if they dont master English, seen as a key to success and be successful.
