Irrigation plan symbols

The most common symbols used when designing irrigation plans are listed below. Sprinkler - full This symbol is used to represent a popup with a 360 degree spray nozzle attached. This nozzle will generally throw water all around it at 360 degrees; at a distance of 3.6 metres or 4.5 metres. Sprinkler - half This symbol is used to represent a popup with a 180 degree spray nozzle attached. This nozzle will generally throw water all around it at 180 degrees; at a distance of 3.6 metres or 4.5 metres. Sprinkler - quarter This symbol is used to represent a popup with a 90 degree spray nozzle attached. This nozzle will generally throw water all around it at 90 degrees; at a distance of 3.6 metres or 4.5 metres. Sprinkler - one third This symbol is used to represent a popup with a 120 degree spray nozzle attached. This nozzle will generally throw water all around it at 120 degrees; at a distance of 3.6 metres or 4.5 metres. Sprinkler - three quarter This symbol is used to represent a popup with a 270 degree spray nozzle attached. This nozzle will generally throw water all around it at 270 degrees; at a distance of 3.6 metres or 4.5 metres. Sprinkler - two thirds This symbol is used to represent a popup with a 240 degree spray nozzle attached. This nozzle will generally throw water all around it at 240 degrees; at a distance of 3.6 metres or 4.5 metres.

Sprinkler - Variable Arc Nozzle This symbol is used to represent a popup with a variable arc nozzle which means it can be adjusted from 0 degrees to 360 degrees. This nozzle will generally throw water around at a distance of 3.6 metres or 4.5 metres. Automatic control valve This symbol is used to represent an automatic control valve, otherwise known as a solenoid. Valves allow you to automatically turn different sections on and off, remotely. Gate valve This symbol is used to represent a gate valve, otherwise known as a hand operated valve. Gate valves may be used in place of electric valves to turn different sections on or off. They are manually operated isolation valves. Flushing valve This symbol is used to represent a flushing valve. It is a self opening valve that allows lines to be flushed when the pipe pressure is low and they shut when the pressure builds up. Automatic air release valve Automatic air release valves are used to displace any air contained within an irrigation system which could impair (or damage) its performance. Check valve A check valve (sometimes called a non return valve) is used to allow water to remain within the pipes so it does not drain through its lowest point. Lateral lines This symbol is used to represent lateral lines which are connected to the main line and carry water to the sprinkler locations. They come in a range of sizes and wall thicknesses. It is a flexible pipe used for irrigation purposes. Main line This symbol represents the main water line which carries water to the different sections of the irrigation system.

Micro sprayers This symbol represents micro sprayers which are miniature sprinklers often used for smaller garden beds. Control unit This symbol represents the control unit for the sprinkler system. The control unit turns the automatic valves on or off to a set program. These valves then run water to the required sections. Water source You always need to locate your water source before installing an irrigation system. This is the symbol that is commonly used to represent it on an irrigation plan. Your water source could come from a bore, the mains supply or a pump.

Legend A good plan should also contain a legend explaining what all the symbols on the plan represent. It's good practice to include a legend so that your clients can easily understand and read your plan.

Pressure Gauge This symbol represents a pressure gauge. These are used to determine either static of dynamic pressures in an irrigation system and are useful to detecting problem associated with pressure. Direction of flow This symbol represents the direction that the water flows in. Scale The scale on a plan represents a ratio to the original plan. If a scale is 1:100 this means that every cm shown on the plan represents 100 cm (1 metre) onsite. Pressure reducing valve This symbol represents a valve that maintains pressure at a preset

amount to control pressures in irrigation systems. These are commonly used when installing drip irrigation systems, or where high pressures can present a problem. Sub surface dripperline pipe This symbol is used to represent dripperline pipe which seeps water at a controlled rate at root level. Filter This symbol is used to represent a filter. Filters come in different sizes (volume capacities) and mesh sizes (filtration particle exclusion capacities). Screen filter This symbol is used to represent a screen filter. It uses a fine mesh formed into a column to filter out undesirable elements from the water supply.
