CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION

A.

Background Language is important as a tool of communication for human being. Without language people cannot interact and share their thoughts and ideas with others. Language is used to show our feeling, thinking and willing, besides language as a media of communication that exists in the culture of society. Nowadays, the English language are not odd anymore in the world. It has become the popular language which is learnt by most people in many countries around the world. English is an international language. It is the worlds most widely used language by society for communication and international contact. In this globalization era, everyone are demanded to prepare a great human resources for his/her life particularly in science and technology. Of course, to compete against it, the people should have an adequate knowledge and good skills. Therefore, mastering English language both oral and written English actively is important for academic and global media communication. In Indonesia, English is the first foreign language that must be learnt by students from elementary school level up to senior high school level. The government realizes that mastering English is one way to absorb the sciences and technology in order to create great human resources. And, it is no doubt that great human resources are very important to develop nation existences toward other nations. Besides that, English has become a

medium instruction in teaching-learning activity especially for particular lesson in certain school. When students are learning English, they will also learn language skills and language component. Grammar is one of English language component that it must be learnt and understood by students. It is a very basic knowledge and important tool for students to master English. In English grammar, adverbial clause is one of many grammatical categories which is important to be learnt by students. Adverbial clause is a subordinate clause used to modify a verb, an adjective or an adverb in main clause. Adverbial clause is a dependent clause but it is needed to be mastered in order to explain the main clause so that the meaning of the sentence can be understood clearly. George E, Wishon and Julia M. Burks (1980) state, an adverbial clause is a dependent clause used as an adverb; it therefore can modify a verb, an adjective, a verbal, another verb, or a sentence. Learning grammar is not easy for many Indonesian students, as it has already known that English and Indonesian language has many different aspects in grammatical form. Of course, by this differentiation, there are many difficulties will be faced by students when they learn grammar. Regarding the previous study, this research is conducted to investigate the problems related to the students error in making adverbial clauses. Therefore, the research is conducted to find out the students skills in making adverbial clauses, to analyze and classify the students ability, and to come up with suggestions to the problems in making adverbial clauses.

Statement of the Problem The statements of the problem are: 1. 2. What are the students errors in making adverbial clause? What are the factors that cause the students error in making adverbial clause?

Limitation of the Study To limit the problem, the students error and causes of them in making adverbial clause are investigated in this research.

Objective of the Research Based on the problem statement above, there are two aims in doing the research, they are: 1. To know kinds of students error made in making adverbial clause. 2. To find out the causes of the students error in making adverbial clause.

Research Site and Participant The population of this research is the second year high school students of DAARUL ULUUM LIDO. Purposive sampling is used by taking class XI Social A which consists of 37 students because according to the English teacher, this class has the lowest score in English lesson.

Research Methodology In this research, the descriptive method in analyzing students error in making adverbial clauses is used. Descriptive method is method to describe systematically a situation or area of interest factually and accurately. Three kinds of instruments are used

to get the data. First is using a test. The tests are given to the students that related to adverbial clauses. The test is intended to measure the students ability and to find out the errors which they make in making adverbial clauses. Second, closed questionnaires are given to the students which is consisting of 15 questions and interview consisting of 10 guided questions to know the causes of students error in making adverbial clauses. Finally, the students error in making adverbial clauses will be analyzed and described based on the data that he gets.
