Educational Psychology at ISB

Evelyn Keyes has lived and worked on the international school circuit in Brussels for 24 years. She has extensive experience in educational psychology and special educational needs (SEN), specializing in psychological assessment, diagnostics and the development and direction of SEN programmes. Other areas of expertise include: second language acquisition and the challenge of multi-lingualism for the SEN student; student at risk appraisal; counselling and inclusive educational policy and practices.

What is the fee for this service?


When a full-scale psychological educational evaluation is conducted there will be a charge of 850 to parents through the ISB billing system. Financial aid is available to families who require it.

What is the work of the Educational Psychologist?


The Educational Psychologist primarily focuses upon helping students who are experiencing problems either in their home or educational environments. These may include difficulties with learning, social and/or emotional problems. The psychologist may work with the student on an individual basis, or with groups of students if/ when necessary. Confidentiality is a high priority.

Typical responsibilities/tasks of the educational psychologist:


Performing full scale psycho-educational evaluations comprising both cognitive and academic skills assessments. Formally observing individual students in the classroom. Advising on individual learning programmes (ILPs) to facilitate differentiation in the classroom. Making referrals to outside specialist agencies neurologists, psychiatrists and other therapists. Counselling individual students and assessing their emotional needs. Consulting with multi-disciplinary teams (teachers, speech and occupational therapists, psychiatrists, neurologists, parents) to determine the best provisions to support the students holistic development. Developing and supporting behaviour management programmes. Advising on topics such as bullying or social exclusion. Attending student case study meetings in each school section to discuss, monitor and evaluate individual students and how best to meet their social, emotional, behavioural and learning needs. Recommending adaptations to the environment to positively influence a childs development both at home and at school Collaborating on a highly confidential basis with other professionals outside of school (eg. psychologists, therapists) to establish a liaison in the best interest of the student. Attending professional courses and trainings to enhance continuing professional development.

Testing at ISB includes:


Discussions with the childs teacher(s) regarding classroom performance, behaviour and adaptation. Intake meeting with the parent(s) to establish the childs developmental profile and explore parental concerns. Formal classroom observation of the student. Full scale psychometric evaluation of how the child utilizes information during the learning process. Assessment of current academic skills. A formal written report detailing all of the evaluation results, conclusions and recommendations. Meeting with the student and parent(s) to review and discuss the findings of the evaluation. Sharing the assessment results with all of the teachers concerned and discussing the types of accommodations that are necessary to maximize the students learning potential. Remaining available for future consultation with teachers and parents regarding the students academic program and progress.
