Companies that strive to be innovative in their fields are more and more leaving extrinsic control mechanisms, also

mentioned in debedes Theory X (reference), and moving to more intrinsic mechanisms where employees are more self-encouraged to do great work. Leaders are exchanging their white-collar shirts and ties for Hawaiian shirts, and they are trying to level more with their employees. Creative companies have been argued to be especially prone to this new type of control mechanism in which employees are given more autonomy and freedom. This is not to say that the control mechanisms have been deleted but instead have become more refined and sophisticated (reference to book).

But when is then the right time to intervene? Looking at different professions along Woodwards (year) graph, we can see distinctions in different types of professions. Graphic artists have proven to be very creative in the beginning of their project (lifecycles) whereas they in the end have either written their own design rules on how to structure and build a piece (or are following other conventional design rules). Music writers on the other hand tend to spend a lot of time on their .

It can therefore be argued that when it is best to control a creative process and when it is best to release it depends on the given professions whether it is routine work vs. non-routine work and the level of technological complexity.

There is also a reason why creative organizations employ a position such as a creative director. The creative workforce (the input) needs to be pointed in the right direction when working on a project.

Bilton (year) (mentions) how creative people are to be left alone on their work so their creative can flourish and be inhibited so that their talent(s) can blossom. However, (someone) talks about people needing structure to live.

People need structure. Without structure there is chaos and this is something that people wish to avoid (reference).

History also shows that some of the biggest discoveries in physics as well as great innovations in supply chains have happened during the execution of repetitive tasks. Albert Einstein worked at the US patent office where he claims to have come up with many of his groundbreaking theories and Japanese car manufacturer Toyota have implemented more innovative ways of assembleing their cars helped by workers on the assembly line.

Release and control mechanisms are being used more and more in companies that want to be innovative in their fields.
