LANSING April is Alcohol Awareness
Month in Michigan and the Michigan Liquor
Control Commission (MLCC) is encouraging all
communities to take this time to focus on the
consequences of underage and binge drinking.
One in three students report they have con-
sumed alcohol at least once by the end of the
eighth grade and seven out of ten students have
done so by the end of high school.
According to the Century Council (www.
centurycouncil.org), some important basic facts
about underage drinking include:
n Americas young people choose alcohol
more so than any other product they are pro-
hibited by law from having, more than tobacco
or illicit drugs;
n 17 percent of 12- to 20-year-olds report
binge drinking in the past month;
n35 percent of teens cite drinking and driv-
ing as a top social concern; and
n 42 percent of full-time college students
report binge drinking.
The commission understands that we are a
critical component to the hospitality and tourism
industry, and we need to balance that with our
role as regulators of state laws and Commission
Rules which address selling/serving minors and
overconsumption, said Andy Deloney, chairman
of the MLCC. We are sensitive to the issues of
economic development, job creation and growing
the economy and revenue and how they all are
intertwined. We promote good, safe and respon-
sible business practices. Our licensees are encour-
aged to be better educated, and arm themselves
with all the tools available to be a successful, yet
responsible business.

Charles DeShano
Charles DeShano, 68, of Howard City passed away
April 7, 2012, at Spectrum Health Butterworth Campus.
He was born March 2, 1944, in Wyandotte, the son
of Adlore and Elizabeth (Charboneau) DeShano. During
his working years he worked in the Railroad Industry as
a Fitter, Welder and Burner for 17 years. He also owned

the bar, he worked as a crane operator for several years
before his retirement.

Dalton was born on Sept. 28, 1995, the son of Sherry
Gustinis Quick and Michael Wayne
Cole. He was known to his friends as
BUCKY and BOO to his family. He will
always be remembered for wearing his
long johns and work boots no matter
what the weather was and also for his
willingness to do just about anything
for a dollar. Dalton loved to make
people laugh and was always making
goofy faces just to see a smile. He was
adventurous and was always doing
something that they probably shouldnt have been doing
with his favorite group of boys. He had a special fondness
for animals and was always teased that he would someday
live like Grizzly Adams.

Quick and Mike Cole (Tracy Dodds); grandparents, Ran-

will live forever. As Dalton always joked that he was go-
ing to live with his Mom forever. He will be cremated and
brought home. A memorial service took place on Thurs-
day, April 12, 2012 at Tri County High School.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Heckman Funeral
Home.
Daisy Arbutus Kraft
Daisy Arbutus Kraft, 96, of Howard City passed away
April 2, 2012, at her residence. She was born Nov. 15, 1915,
in Howard City, the daughter of Frank and Daisy (Jones)
Terwilliger. On April 25, 1940, Arbutus married Wilbert
Kraft in Stanton and he preceded her in death on March
18, 2000. Also preceding her in death were her parents
and brothers, Francis and Dwight.
When Arbutus and Wilbert moved to Howard City
they were the youngest couple on Edgerton Street and
had the youngest child. Later, three more girls were born
in the home and they were always the youngest children
on the street. As of a few days ago Arbutus was the old-
est resident in the Village of Howard City and the last of
the residents that lived on Edgerton Street in the early
1940s.
Arbutus worked for Tri County Schools after her chil-
dren started school. She loved Jesus, family and friends.
She has been a member of First Baptist Church in How-
ard City for almost 86 years, the longest membership in
church history. She has had various responsibilities in the
church, Sunday School and Ladies Missionary. In the early
1950s, she worked with teenage girls in Pioneer Girls. She
later worked in Awana with the girls. She passed sections
herself as an example to the girls. She enjoyed garden-
ing, canning, sewing and baking bread which the grand-
children loved. She also loved to quilt of which she made
all her grandchildren graduation and wedding quilts and
made the great and great-great grandchildren quilts when
they were born.
She is survived by four daughters, Helen Kraft, Daisy
May and Merle Rochester, Eleanor Marek, Norma and
Craig Valiket; six granchildren, Larry and Lori Chesebro,
Gary and Leslie Chesebro, Pat and Darcie Marek, Valerie

Kaelynn and another yet unnamed and several nieces
and nephews and special friend Mary Troutwine. Funeral
Services took place at the First Baptist Church with Pas-
tor Brian Humphrey and Pastor Jack Richard offciating
with burial in Reynolds Cemetery. Arrangements were
entrusted to the Heckman Funeral Home.

Cops chase erratic driver
Montcalm County Sheriffs
Deputies responded to a report of
a possibly intoxicated man driving
a white colored car in the wrong
lane in the Stanton area around
midnight Sunday evening, April
8, 2012. Deputies soon observed a
white Buick being driven erratically
on Stanton Road near Lake Road.
The driver was observed to match
the description given earlier and a
traffc stop was initiated on M-91
near Langston. The driver attempt-
ed to get out of the vehicle and was
ordered back inside his vehicle. The
driver re-entered his vehicle and
fed, driving South toward Green-
ville at speeds ranging from 45 to 85
mph. The vehicle continued to drive
erratically and committed several
traffc violations.
The pursuit entered the City of
Greenville and included assistance
from offcers from the Greenville
Department of Public Safety and
the Michigan State Police. The driv-
er then drove onto the lawn of Bald-
win Heights Elementary and briefy
stopped. He then placed the vehicle
in reverse and rammed the pursu-
ing deputys police car. The suspect
then drove toward a Greenville De-
partment of Public Safety Offcer
who had exited his patrol car, nearly
running him over. The pursuit then
continued through the playground
area of Baldwin Heights Elemen-
tary and onto Judd Street where he
collided with a tree. The driver, a 43
year old of Marion, sustained inju-
ries and was not wearing a seat belt.
He was taken to Spectrum United
Memorial Hospital by Montcalm
County Emergency Services and
was treated for minor injuries. He
is currently in custody and facing
charges of Fleeing and Eluding; Re-
sisting and Obstructing; and Oper-
ating While Intoxicated. The pros-
ecutor is reviewing this incident for
possible charges regarding an as-
sault on a police offcer with a mo-
tor vehicle. This incident remains
under investigation.

6 RIVERVALLEYNEWSSHOPPERMONDAY,April16,2012
The era of Prohibition, speak-
easies and wide-lapelled mobsters
comes to life with the upcom-
ing production of The Ragweed
Blues, an original American com-
edy presented by Rogue River
Community Theater.
Nearly four dozen actors are
participating in the play, which
runs April 26-29th at Kent The-
ater in Cedar Springs.
Set in New York City, Rag-
weed Blues mimics the classic old
black and white gangster movies
of the 1920s and 1930s, featuring
legendary Hollywood actors like
James Cagney, Pat OBrien and
Humphrey Bogart, explained Di-
rector Patricia Rose.
The gangster movies from
Hollywoods golden era are
American treasures and theres
been renewed interest in the
noir, especially with the success
of The Artist, she said, refer-
ring to black-and-white melodra-
ma which earned fve Academy
Awards last month, including
best picture.
Taking it a step further,
weve included slap-stick comedy
based on many of the old Holly-
wood matinee idols of that era,
Rose said. There is romance, a
sting operation, a movie set and
gangsters all caught up in The
Great Depression in New York
City circa 1930.
Audiences will especially
enjoy a memorable fght scene
which includes Tommy guns,
brawling and bawling.
Era-specifc costumes and

The Odd Couple opens in
downtown Lowell
The stage still awaits fnishing touches but the laughs
have already begun during rehearsals for THE ODD
COUPLE, the Thebes Players and LowellArts. dinner
theatre production of Neil Simons comedy classic. Join
the fun at Larkins Other Place in downtown Lowell the
weekends of April 27 May 12.
The Odd Couple has been entertaining audiences for

der that his wife left him. Late to arrive is Felix Unger
who has just been separated from his wife. Fastidious,
depressed and none too tense, Felix seems suicidal, but
as the action unfolds Oscar becomes the one with murder
on his mind when the clean-freak and the slob ultimately
decide to room together with hilarious results as The
Odd Couple is born.
The Thebes Players/LowellArts. production, direct-
ed by Sue Bradford, features John Foley as Oscar, Matt
Tawney as Felix, Brent Alles as Murray, Jeff Fisher as
Vinney, Gary Brooks as Speed, Dean Borth as Speed, Sue
Fisher as Gwendolyn, Leanette Bailey-Tanner as Cecily.

I am so thankful for the care I have received from Select Care Physical

The Michigan Property Tax Act allows some
people to postpone their summer property tax
payments. Effective March 22, 2012, the Act
also allows a limited liability company or a
partnership to take advantage of the postponement
rules on agricultural property and horticultural
operations, if certain income criteria are met and
the individual partners qualied for a deferment
before they formed the partnership.
The Tax Act says: A local tax collecting unit
that collects a summer property tax is required
to defer collecting summer property taxes until
the following February 15 against the principal
residence of certain individuals, and against
agricultural real estate which qualify under its
rules, if requested. The taxpayer must le the
appropriate form with the tax collector, on time.
Thats it.
Farming partners qualify. Previously the
taxpayer had to be an individual. But many
agricultural businesses in Michigan are family
operated as partnerships or limited liability
companies, sensibly, to protect their other assets
from liability claims against them (my personal
recommendation). On March 22, 2012 the
Legislature extended the deferment privilege to
limited liability companies and partners whose
individual members previously qualied.
Specic residential tax rules. To defer the
summer tax payment on a principal residence the
taxpayer must be either a totally and permanently
disabled person, a blind person, a paraplegic, a
quadriplegic, an eligible serviceperson or veteran,
an eligible widow or widower, OR, must be 62
years of age or older, including the unremarried
surviving spouse of a person who was 62 years
of age or older at the time of death, and in the
prior taxable year had a total household income
of $40,000.00, or less.
Income rules. Summer taxes may be deferred for
classied or used as agricultural real estate if the
gross receipts of the agricultural or horticultural
operations in the previous year (or the average
gross receipts of the operations in the previous 3
years) are not less than either (a) the household
income of the owner in the previous year or (b)
the combined household incomes in the previous
year of the individual members of a limited
liability company or (c) partners of a partnership
that owns the agricultural real property.
Just continuing the deferment. A limited
liability company or partnership may claim the
deferment only if the individual members of
the limited liability company or partners of the
partnership qualied for the deferment under
this section before the individual members or
partners formed the limited liability company
or partnership. The Legislature has recognized
Michigan farmers need for protection from the
vagaries of a uctuating economy.
If you need help with the form, the tax man has
to help you ll it out. You get until September
15 to le the deferment request. Taxes deferred
that are not paid by the following February 15
are not subject to penalties or interest for the
period of deferment. Thats a signicant potential
savings. So if you need a breather for free for a
few months take it.

Head Pain Migraine Part Two
Last week we learned that the rst part of a migraine was constriction of blood vessels in the brain. This change in our normal
physiology has to have some trigger. Food, Toxins, Hormones are triggers to cause this change. Stress can have a huge impact on
our general body chemistry and therefore is very important as we learn how to eliminate head pain.
Stress is associated with what is called the Fight or Flight response in our body. When we sense danger, we are genetically
programmed to respond to this danger by running to safety or ghting for our survival. Our pulse goes up. The blood pressure
rises. Breathing rate increases. Blood sugar goes up. Muscles tense. Everything is preparing, getting ready to meet the challenge.
The release of adrenalin causes vasoconstriction. As we know this vasoconstriction is part of the rst phase of a migraine. So every
time we get stressed, we are right on the verge of triggering a migraine.
Our body is designed to meet these Fight or Flight episodes and then recover. However when there is constant bombardment
of our body by stressful events we sometimes begin to break down our genetically weakest system. So based on our genetic
susceptibility, some of us will begin to have damage to certain parts of the brain caused by the effects of the Fight or Flight
events.
Stress causes the damage to the system and becomes part of the trigger that starts the chemical cascade in our body that
presents as a migraine. Stress is a natural, normal part of being Human. We cannot really get away from it. So what do we do? We
can learn to change how we respond to it. In the traditional medical world this is done with prescription medications that dampen
our response to the stress triggers. In theory this is good, but in the long run, it does not work very well because people tend to
get addicted to the medications. Then they have a new set of problems and stressors to deal with.
The best way to deal with stress is to learn to change how our body reacts to the Fight or Flight triggers. When we have learned
this, our automatic response to the stressful trigger is not an increase in blood pressure and pulse, but a calm, cool mind and body
that can handle the situation without damage to the system.
Learning basic relaxation and meditation techniques is where we should begin. Many years ago, I learned a few simple things
and since then have studied much more advanced techniques. We suggest starting with a relaxation class
or even a recording to begin to learn this process of calming the mind. Spend a little time each day in the
morning or just before going to sleep practicing this process.
It is as simple as sitting in a quiet comfortable place where you will not be disturbed for 10 or 15 minutes.
Then close your eyes, inhale a deep breath and then as you exhale consciously feel your body relax.
Mentally imagine you are at an ideal place of relaxation. This could be a place you have been before or a
completely imaginary place. Our brain cannot tell the difference between actually being there and vividly
imagining that you are there. Then daydream in this pleasant state of mind, relaxing both body and mind.
Doing this regularly will replace stress chemistry with relaxation chemistry and will begin the repair process
in our body. With practice our emergency response will be calm and resourceful instead of Fight or Flight
and the frequency and intensity of the migraines will change and eventually disappear.
