Assignment 1

EXERCISES FOR TOPICS FROM WEEK 1: Review Sedra Microelectronic Circuits International 6th Edn, p1-38, particularly Example 1.5. Make sure you can answer End-Of-Chapter (EOC) problems 1.59 and 1.60 (not for submission). Then answer and submit the following questions (NOTE EXTENSIONS TO QUESTIONS): 1. Sedra EOC 1.51 Figure P l.51 shows a signal source connected to the input of an amplifier. Here Rs is the source resistance; Ri and Ci are the input resistance and input capacitance, respectively, of the amplifier. Derive an expression for Vo(s)/Vs(s) and show that it is of the low-pass single timeconstant type. Find the 3-dB frequency for the case Rs =20k, Ri =80k, and Ci = 5 pF. Sketch a Bode plot (magnitude in dB, phase in degrees) against log frequency, labelled appropriately, on a copy of the semilogarithmic grid provided.

2. Sedra EOC P1.52 for the circuit of Fig P1.52, find the transfer function T(s) = Vo(s)/Vi(s) and arrange it in the appropriate standard form from Table 1.2. Is this a high-pass or a low-pass network? What is its transmission at very high frequencies? [Estimate this directly, as well as letting s in your expression for T(s).] In terms of the circuit components, what is the corner frequency 0? For R1 = 10 k, R2 = 40 k, and C = 0.1F, find f0. What is the value of |T(j0)|? Sketch a Bode plot (magnitude in dB, phase in degrees) against log frequency, labelled appropriately, on a copy of the semilogarithmic grid provided. 3. The back cover of the book Electronic signal conditioning (Bruce Newby, Butterworth-Heinemann, 1994) contains the following: The dictionary describes a signal as a transmitted effect conveying conditioning is defined as the putting into the required state. In the field engineering, the combined term of signal conditioning is taken as meaning the of a voltage or current waveform into a more useful or manageable size or undergoing a logical or mathematical operation. a message; of electronic manipulation shape, or its

How satisfactory is the second sentence in the definition of signal conditioning? (Answer In one or two sentences). EXERCISES FOR TOPICS FROM WEEK 2: Review Sedra Microelectronic Circuits International 6th Edn, p85-120. Make sure you can answer End-Of-Chapter (EOC) problems 2.27 and 2.37 (not for submission). Then answer and submit the following questions(NOTE EXTENSIONS TO QUESTIONS): 4. Sedra EOC 2.60 The circuit shown in Fig. P2.71 is a representation of a versatile commerciallyavailable I.C. differential amplifier module. The circuit can be configured for a variety of applications by appropriate connection of terminals A, B, C, D, and O. (a) Show how the circuit can be used to implement a difference amplifier of unity gain. (b) Show how the circuit can be used to implement single-ended amplifiers with gains: (i) - 1 V/V (ii) +1 V/V (iii) +2 V/V (iv) + 0.5 V/V N.B.: As in actual practice avoid leaving a terminal open-circuited, for such a terminal may act as an "antenna," picking up interference and noise through capacitive coupling. Rather, find a convenient node to connect such a terminal in a redundant way. When more than one circuit implementation is possible, comment on the relative merits of each, taking into account such considerations as dependence on component matching, and input resistance. (c) With the aid of a diagram, show a way of connecting this module to a remote load, so as to reduce the voltage division losses in the interconnecting wiring. (d) With equations, suggest a further use for terminal D.

5. Sedra EOC 2.61 Consider the instrumentation amplifier of Fig. 2.20(b) with a common-mode input voltage of +3 V (D.C.) and a sinusoidal differential input signal of 80mV peak. Let 2R1 = 1 k, R2 = 50k, R3 = R4 = 10 k. Find the voltage at every node in the circuit.
