FOREWORD
The 1st International Conference on Combined Cycle Power Generation was an important milestone in the development of combined cycle power plants. This was the first truly international platform shared by academics, R&D engineers, users and manufacturers of combined cycle plants to exchange information on this technology. The mission of this conference was to promote international exchange of scientific and technical knowledge in support of the contribution of this technology to the improvement of our society. The conference was held at Calcutta, India, on 6-8 January 1994. It was organized by the International Advisory Board, in co-operation with the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, and the Technical University of Nova Scotia, Halifax, Canada. It was co-sponsored by the following organizations: American Society of Mechanical Engineers China Power Engineers Society Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers Institute of Energy, UK Institute of Engineers, India Japanese Society of Mechanical Engineers

A number of leading companies supported this conference through financial contributions. Fifty-four papers, contributed from Asia, Europe and North America, covered topics including combined cycle power generation scenario, combustion turbines, integrated gasification combined cycle, pressurized fluidized bed, gas clean-up, CO2 scrubbing and thermodynamic analysis of performance modelling. Each presentation was followed by a discussion. The authors updated their papers, which were then sent for peer review. Fourteen papers were selected through the peer review process. They are printed in this special issue of Heat Recovery Systems & CHP. A special thanks goes to Mr Leming Cheng who worked tirelessly in arranging for the review and putting together this special issue. I also wish to express by gratitude to Professor D. S. De, the organizing secretary for the conference arrangements, and the International Advisory Board, for their guidance. Finally, I express my personal appreciation of the tireless effort of Kathleen Dempsey and Jacqueline Blackburn. It is with regret that I inform you of the recent death of a prominent author in this volume, Professor E. N. Prutkovsky. Professor Prutkovsky was in the forefront of CCPG development and the publication of his work will underline his contribution in our memory. Prabir Basu Guest Editor
