ABSTRACT
Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) is a way in which Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques are being applied to education. Broadly defined, an intelligent tutoring system is educational software containing an artificial intelligence component. AI attempts to produce in a computer behavior which, if performed by a human, would be described as intelligent. ITSs may similarly be thought of as attempts to produce in a computer behavior which, if performed by a human, would be described as good teaching .The design and development of such tutors lie at the intersection of computer science, cognitive psychology and educational research; this intersecting area is normally referred to as cognitive science. ITS software tracks students work, tailoring feedback and hints along the way. By collecting information on a particular students performance, the software can make inferences about strengths and weaknesses, and can suggest additional work. This paper introduces ITS and explains various types of ITS that can be used in education.

1. INTRODUCTION
Intelligent tutoring systems are used for supporting and improving the process of learning and teaching in arbitrary domain knowledge. The main objective behind an ITS is its intelligence or adaptive teaching methods. Adaptation means that the system moulds itself to cater to different needs of different students. In such education models the role of human teacher is replaced with a computer tutor basically consisting of a domain knowledge base as well as of both a student module with an appropriate student model and a teacher strategy guiding the learning and teaching process. This paper describes how ITS can be used as a secondary knowledge source for teachers and their students in secondary and primary schools. Since 1970s Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques are incorporated into education in order to produce educationally useful computer artifacts. Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) are altering the landscape of how course instruction, workplace training, and curriculum development are conducted. These systems vary in scale, scope and size. An ITS can be as simple instruction module of a related series of semesterlong courses.

Intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs) are computer programs that are designed to incorporate techniques from the AI community in order to provide tutors which know what they teach, who they teach and how to teach it. AI attempts to produce in a computer behavior which, if performed by a human, would be described as intelligent: ITSs may similarly be thought of as attempts to produce in a computer behavior which, if performed by a human, would be described as good teaching .The design and development of such tutors lie at the intersection of computer science, cognitive psychology and educational research; this intersecting area is normally referred to as cognitive science.

2. FUNCTIONS OF INTELLIGENT TUTOR SYSTEMS

Organization of the domain knowledge, Keeping track of the knowledge and performance of the learner, Planning the teaching strategies on the basis of the learners knowledge state.
