COMPARATIVE AND TRANSNATIONAL HISTORY

Central European Approaches and New Perspectives
Edited by Heinz-Gerhard Haupt, European University Institute and Jrgen Kocka, Free University of Berlin

POPULAR HISTORIOGRAPHIES IN THE 19TH AND 20TH CENTURY

Edited by Sylvia Paletschek, University of Freiburg

Since the 1970s West German historiography has been one of the main arenas of international comparative history. It has produced important empirical studies particularly in social history as well as methodological and theoretical reflections on comparative history. During the last twenty years however, this approach has felt pressure from two sources: cultural historical approaches, which stress microhistory and the construction of cultural transfer on the one hand, global history and transnational approaches with emphasis on connected history on the other. This volume introduces the reader to some of the major methodological debates and to the recent empirical research of German historians, who do comparative and transnational work.
March 2010; 272 pages, bibliog., index ISBN 978-1-84545-615-3 Hardback $90.00/53.00

This book opens up an important new field of study (popular histories) which promises to contribute in a major way to the investigation of broader historical cultures. Its intertextuality and interdisciplinarity point the way for future research in this area. Stefan Berger, University of
Manchester

While mainly focusing on Germany (though not exclusively), the authors analyze different forms of popular historiographies and popular presentations of history since 1800 and the interrelation between popular and academic historiography, exploring in particular popular histories in different media and popular historiography as part of memory culture.

REFLECTIONS ON CAMBRIDGE
Alan Macfarlane, Kings College, Cambridge

THE FUTURE OF MEMORY

Edited by Richard Crownshaw, Goldsmiths College, University of London, Jane Kilby, University of Salford and Antony Rowland, University of Salford

I much enjoyed the Cambridge book - full of wisdom, warmth and great stories, a kind of manifesto for the liberal arts as well as a song of love for a place.
Michael Chaplin, Screenwriter and Playwright

This is an innovative, well structured and balanced collection of essays which present a survey of theories and case studies underpinning the burgeoning field of memory studies. It addresses the big issues including witnessing, trauma, memorials, the relation between personal and public memory, and generational transmission.
Peter Carrier, author of Holocaust Monuments and National Memory

I have been reading and enjoying the book on Cambridge. As always with Alan Macfarlanes work, it is whimsical, elegant, informative, scholarly, cosmopolitan and also gentle and friendly in its tone. Greatly enjoyable and very useful to those who dont know much about the intricacies of life at Cambridge. Srijana Das, Department of Social
Anthropology, Cambridge

This is an excellent collection of essays. Peter Lawson,

The traditions and creativity of Cambridge University have survived 800 years. In celebration, this first-ever combined historical and anthropological account explores the culture, the customs, the colleges and the politics of the revered institution. Having taught there for nearly forty years, the author sets forth a personal but also dispassionate attempt to understand how this ancient university developed and changed and how it continues to influence those who pass through it. This book delves into the history and architecture as well as the charm and the ghosts of Cambridge; it is for anyone who studies, teaches, visits, or is intrigued by this great intellectual center.

WHO ABOLISHED SLAVERY?

A Debate with Joo Pedro Marques

HISTORICAL MEMORY IN AFRICA

Dealing with the Past, Reaching for the Future in an Intercultural Context
Edited by Mamadou Diawara, University of Frankfurt/Main, Bernard Lategan, Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study, and Jrn Rsen, University of WittenHerdecke

The past half-century has produced a mass of information regarding slave resistance, ranging from individual acts of disobedience to massive uprisings. Many of these acts of rebellion have been studied extensively, yet the ultimate goals of the insurgents remain open for discussion. Marques, one of the leading historians of slavery and abolition, argues that, in most cases, it is impossible to establish a direct relation between slaves uprisings and the emancipation laws that would be approved in the western countries. Following this presentation, his arguments are taken up by a dozen of the most outstanding historians in this field. In a concluding chapter, Marques responds briefly to their comments and evaluates the degree to which they challenge or enhance his view.

A vast amount of literature both scholarly and popular now exists on historical memory, but there is remarkably little available that is written from an African perspective. This volume explores the inner dynamics of memory in all its variations, from its most destructive and divisive impact to its remarkable potential to heal and reconcile. Although the role of memory in an African context may have distinct features, it forms part of a global dialogue to which it has much to contribute, but from which it also has much to receive.

EMOTIONS IN AMERICAN HISTORY

Edited by Jessica C. Gienow-Hecht, University of Cologne

RAISING CITIZENS IN THE CENTURY OF THE CHILD

Child-Rearing in the United States and German Central Europe in the Twentieth Century
Edited by Dirk Schumann, International University Bremen Published in Association with the German Historical Institute, Washington, D.C.

The study of emotions has continually attracted the interest of scholars in various disciplines, igniting a lively public debate on the constructive and destructive power of emotions in society as well as within each of us. The contributors to this volume explore the role of emotions in history. In particular they focus on emotions in American history between the 18th century and the present: in war, in social and political discourse, and in art and the media. In addition to case studies, the volume includes a review of their fields by senior scholars, who offer new insights regarding future research projects.

The strength of this impressive collection is that it brings the family and childhood back in and emphasizes the significance of these subjects for understanding debates over citizenship, the relationship of the public to the private, religion, science, and secularization in the twentieth century. The comparative focus on Germany and the United States works well, and several of the articles are in (at least indirect) conversation with each other in ways that illuminate the comparison. SEARCHING FOR A CULTURAL DIPLOMACY

Edited by Jessica C.E. Gienow-Hecht, University of Cologne and Mark C. Donfried, Founder and Director, Institute for Cultural Diplomacy

Research on the meaning of cultural diplomacy in the twentieth century often focuses on the United States and the Cold War, but recently historians have begun to look at other western countries such as Germany. This volume explores the significance of cultural diplomacy in regions outside the United States and Germany, such as Eastern Europe, Asia and the Middle East. This volume shows that the function of information and exchange programs differs considerably from area to area depending on historical circumstances and the cultural mindsets of the individuals involved.

Edited by Belinda Davis, Rutgers University, Wilfried Mausbach, University of Heidelberg, Martin Klimke, German Historical Institute, and Carla MacDougall, Rutgers University

This excellent collection of essays addresses with great range and significant insight urgent questions that have long haunted and are again animating the relation of Englishness to Britishness, of nationalism to imperialism, of local cultural grammars to global political formsthe editors have done a superb job of reminding readers why the many paradoxes of Englishness are vital not only to the long history of the formal British empire but to the moment of flexible imperialism we currently inhabit. This is a timely and striking addition to the field.

July 2010, 200 pages, bibliog., index ISBN 978-1-84545-790-7 Paperback $24.95/14.50 ISBN 978-1-84545-320-6 Hardback $60.00/35.00 [2007]

The collection addresses several issues that are currently very important growth areas in scholarship: protest movements, their transnational connections, the question of Americanization/Westernization in Europe, and the 1960s/1970s in general as an important watershed in postwar historyThere have been other recent works that have focused on these issues, but this collection has the advantage of being truly transatlantic in its approach and in the inclusion of some of the most interesting younger scholars working in the field.

From the sixteenth to the eighteenth century, cane sugar production was pre-eminent in the Atlantic Islands, the Caribbean, and Brazil. Subsequently, cane sugar industries in the Americas were transformed by a fusion of new and old forces of production, as the international sugar economy incorporated production areas in Asia, the Pacific, and Africa. Sugars global economic importance and its intimate relationship with colonialism offer an important context for probing the nature of colonial societies. This book questions some major assumptions about the nexus between sugar production and colonial societies in the Caribbean and Southeast Asia, especially in the second (post-1800) colonial era.

William Jankowiak, University of Nevada In Europe, love has been given a prominent place in European self-representations from the Enlightenment onwards. This category of love, stemming from private and personal spheres, was given a public function and used to distinguish European civilization from others. The contributors to this volume trace historical links and analyze specific connections between the two discourses on love and Europe over the course of the entire twentieth century, exploring the distinctions made between the public and private, the political and personal. In doing so, this volume develops an innovative historiography that includes such resources as autobiographies, love letters, and cinematic representations.

The number of studies discussing the labour relationship under industrial capitalism is overwhelming, but the literature on labor and its concrete, day-to-day shop-floor practices is much less abundant. How and by whom workers were supervised is one of the neglected aspects in the history of labour relations. WRITING HISTORY IN THE SOVIET UNION

Making the Past Work
Arup Banerji, University of Delhi Distributed by Berghahn Books on behalf of Social Science Press, Delhi

This is a persuasive and timely collection. Celebrity and charisma are very much on the current research agenda. This volume deals with these issues in a serious, insightful manner, making an original contribution to what is now a rising field of study. Philip Nord, Princeton University Major technological advances and innovations in print and visual media of the 19th century made it possible for ordinary people to identify with the famous; to feel they knew the hero, leader, or star; to imagine that public figures belonged to their private lives. This volume examines the origins and nature of modern mass media and the culture of celebrity and fame they helped to create and includes studies of arts celebrities, charismatic political figures, famous explorers, and celebrated fictional characters.

The Midwest Book Review The history of the Soviet Union has been charted in several studies over the decades. DIAMONDS AND WAR

State, Capital, and Labor in British-Ruled Palestine
David De Vries, Tel Aviv University

Based on previously unexamined historical documents, this book is the first in English to tell the story of the formation of one of the worlds main strongholds of diamond production and trade in Palestine during the 1930s and 1940s. The history of the diamond-cutting industry is discussed as a social history embedded in the international political economy of its time; the genesis of the industry in Palestine is placed on a broad continuum within the geographic and economic dislocations of Dutch, Belgian, and German diamond-cutting centers. This book unravels the Middle-Eastern pattern of state intervention in private capital and recasts this craft cultures inseparability from international politics during a period of war and transformation of empire.

One of the major historians of pre-revolutionary Russia has collected in this volume some of his most important essays, both new and revised. Thematically, they deal with major subjects in the history of imperial Russia and of historical writing, such as ideas and their role in historical change; the intelligentsia, the nobility, and peasant society; and finally, historiography, and how history is written and why. The fourteen texts included in the book raise cardinal questions in current scholarship on Russian history before the upheavals of 1917, and offer original interpretations that are of interest to the educated layman as well as the professional historian.

HOLOCAUST HISTORIOGRAPHY IN CONTEXT

Emergence, Challenges, Polemics and Achievements
Edited by David Bankier, International Institute for Holocaust Research and Dan Michman, Bar-Ilan University

The modes in which historical research is being shaped have become themselves topics of research. Holocaust historiography the documentation, depiction and analysis of one of the most horrific events in human historyis today a wide ranging academic field in which Jewish and nonJewish scholars throughout the world are active. But how did this historiography, especially its Jewish aspect, emerge and by what factors was it shaped? This volume examines the very beginnings of the effort to apply scholarly standards to the understanding of the Holocaustwhen World War II was still raging and immediately after it had ended.

The volume offers a broad overview of the bystander research in recent years, which has identified as the most common behaviours rescue, apathy, indifference, passive complicity, or collaboration, all defying exact quantification. HITLERS SLAVES
Life Stories of Forced Laborers in Nazi-Occupied Europe
Edited by Alexander von Plato, University of Hagen (Germany), Almut Leh, University of Hagen (Germany) and Christoph Thonfeld, Trier University

Deportations by train were critical in the Nazis genocidal vision of the Final Solution of the Jewish Question. In his writings on the Final Solution, Raul Hilberg pondered the role of trains: How can railways be regarded as anything more than physical equipment that was used, when the time came, to transport the Jews from various cities to shooting grounds and gas chambers in Eastern Europe? This book explores that question by analyzing the victims experiences at each stage of forced relocation: the round-ups and departures from the ghettos, the captivity in trains, and finally, the arrival at the camps.

this is one of the best researched regional studies of the Holocaust ever to appear. It is helped by the fact that the authors are also always so cognizant of what was happening elsewhere in Europe at the same time and thus frequently draw out the relationship between seemingly haphazard local decisions and trends across EuropeIndeed, the way in which the book makes sense of complex institutional behavior is at times breathtakingThe precision in the detail and the scope of the contextualization make this one of the more important works to appear on the Holocaust in recent years. The exodus of refugees from Nazi Germany in the 1930s has received far more attention from historians, social scientists, and demographers than many other migrations and persecutions in Europe. However, the issues surrounding the flight of people from Nazi Germany prior to 1939 have been seen as Vorgeschichte (pre-history), implicating the Western European democracies and the United States as bystanders only in the impending tragedy. Based on a comparative analysis of national case studies, this volume deals with the challenges that the pre-1939 movement of refugees from Germany and Austria posed to the immigration controls in the countries of interwar Europe.

CHOICE OUTSTANDING ACADEMIC BOOK OF THE YEAR ...an essential book. It provides precise facts and figures for many issues that have heretofore been presented in impressionistic terms. The International History Review Basing his extensive research into hitherto unexploited archival documentation on both sides of the Rhine, Allan Mitchell has uncovered the inner workings of the German military regime from the Wehrmachts triumphal entry into Paris in June 1940 to its ignominious withdrawal in August 1944. Although mindful of the French experience and the fundamental issue of collaboration, the author concentrates on the complex problems of occupying a foreign territory after a surprisingly swift conquest.

[The book] is well written and well constructed...A high quality work. Robert Gildea, Oxford University Based on extensive archival research in Germany and France, this is the first broad, comparative study of civilian evacuations in Germany and France during World War II. Drawing attention to the interaction between the Germans and French throughout World War II, this book shows how policies in each country were shaped by events in the other. This book is a truly cross-national comparison in a field dominated by accounts of one country or the other. Unique also in that it speaks to current concerns about the impact of air raids and military occupations on civilians.

THE PARADOXICAL REPUBLIC

Austria 19452005
Oliver Rathkolb, University of Vienna Translated from the German by Otmar Binder

The citizens rejection of the European constitution in 2005 was to a certain extent a rejection of the historical grounding for further integration and of the grand design for a United Europe with a common foreign policy and a common market, diverse enough to allow for cultural and social differences. The rejection of this proposal demonstrates a lack of understanding of the historical complexity of Europes past on which the future will need to be builtand so the authors argue that a critical European history is urgently needed, where Europe is seen not as a harmonious continent but as the outcome of violent and bloody conflicts, both within Europe as well as with its Others.

Modern military history, inspired by social and cultural historical approaches, increasingly puts the national histories of the Second World War to the test. New questions and methods are focusing on aspects of war and violence that have long been neglected. What shaped peoples experiences and memories? What differences and what similarities existed in Eastern and Western Europe? Experts from Belgium, Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, Luxemburg, Poland, and Russia discuss those and other questions in this comprehensive volume.

The analyses presented here, ranging from those of 16th-century Greek humanists to 19th-century Romanian reformers to 20th-century writers, socialists and men-of-the-world, suggest that travelers from the region have also created their own identities through their encounters with Europe.

Highly recommended. Choice In Frances Third Republic, secularism was, for its adherents, a new faith, a civic religion founded on a rabid belief in progress and the Enlightenment conviction that men (and women) could remake their world. And yet with all of its pragmatic smoothing over of the supernatural edges of Catholicism, the Third Republic engendered its own fantastical ways of seeing by embracing observation, corporeal dynamism, and imaginative introspection. How these republican ideals and the new national education system of the 1870s and 80sthe structure meant to impart these idealsshaped belle poque popular culture is the focus of this book.

This is an important book of exceptionally high academic quality. This book notably advances our understanding of these issues. Michael Hanagan, Vassar College Escaping the traditional focus on Paris, the author examines the divergent political identities of two occupational groups in Lyon, metal and silk workers, who, despite having lived and worked in the same city, developed different patterns of political practices and bore distinct political identities. This book also examines in detail the way that gender relations influenced industrial change, skill, and political identity. Combining empirical data collected in French archives with social science theory and methods, this study argues that political identities were shaped by the intersection of the prevailing political climate with the social relations surrounding work in specific industrial settings.

the book provides a considerable contribution to the ongoing discussions about the character and significance of the French Revolution a significant enrichment and reinvigoration of the traditional Marxist explanation of the French Revolution and a fine synthesis of the many contributions to criticism of revisionist theses from especially the last two decades. Possibly this book may even provide the starting point for more synthetic reintroductions of socio-economic explanations within the historiography of the Revolution. H-Soz-und-Kult The classic Marxist interpretation of the French Revolution has been challenged in the last generation by the so-called revisionist school. Today, revisionism is the dominant interpretation both in academia and among the educated public. Against this conception, this book reasserts the view that the Revolutionthe capital event of the modern age was indeed a capitalist and bourgeois revolution.

This is a valuable study, then, for anyone interested in the histories of medicine and social policy, as well as the history of Vichy. THE HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE, RECONSIDERED

Edited by Jason Philip Coy, College of Charleston, Benjamin Marschke, Humboldt State University and David Warren Sabean, University of California at Los Angeles

Over the last two decades historians have promoted the Holy Roman Empire from a creaking fossil ready for historys ax to a relatively effective government of a decentralized, highly diverse polity. This well-edited volume by a distinguished international corps of specialists offers the most current views on political Germany between around 1500 and around 1800. The perspectives range between two views: the Empire as the forerunner of modern German states; the Empire as an example of a typically premodern political culture. Readers who know only what textbooks say about Germany before 1800, are in for a surprise. Thomas A. Brady Jr., University of California,
Berkeley

This is a smart, shrewd, wellobserved study of censorship in Imperial Germany that illuminates broad aspects of German society and its political and religious divisions.
Peter Fritzsche, University of Illinois

It is truly a scholarly lifes work, and there is no volume like it, even in the German language.

Imperial Germanys governing elite frequently sought to censor literature that threatened established political, social, religious, and moral norms in the name of public peace, order, and security. This study is the first systematic analysis in any language of state censorship of literature and theater in imperial Germany (18711918).

transcends the usual analytical approach of earlier work, [and] examines a very broad spectrum of reformist, conservative, academic, socialist, feminist, and religious writers It represents a new contribution to our understanding of the German womens movement. Nancy
Reagin, Pace University

The belief in a demographic surplus of unwed women, known as the Frauenberschu, formed a principal pillar of the first German womens movement and served as a central leitmotif in the debates regarding modernity in culture and society of Imperial Germany. Proponents of the female surplus held that the advances of industry and urbanization had upset traditional marriage patterns and left too many women without a husband. By combining the approaches of cultural, social, and gender history, this book provides the first sustained analysis of the ways in which imperial Germans conceptualized anxiety about marital status of women as both a product and a reflection of changing times.

German Conservatives and Nazis in 1933: The Machtergreifung in a New Light
Hermann Beck, University of Miami

An impressive study of a major, though neglected, theme in 20th-Century German history. The author has unearthed a vast amount of material: primary sources, technical literature, and obscure German-language academic studies; it can be stated without hesitation that he knows more about the subject than any scholar anywhere. John Gillingham, University of Missouri St Louis During the twentieth century, German government and industry created a highly skilled workforce as part of an ambitious program to control and develop the countrys human resources. The authors account of the broad support for this program challenges the standard historical accounts that focus on disagreements over the German politicaleconomic order and points instead to an important area of consensus. By tracing the development of these policies over the course of a century, he also suggests important continuities in Germanys domestic politics, even across such different regimes as Imperial, Weimar, Nazi, and post-1945 West Germany.

Hermann Beck has given us by far the best account that we have of the German political right and the triumph of Hitler, an original, carefully researched and revisionist study which will revise certain standard interpretations. German Studies Review He uses the Machtergreifung to give new insight not only in the chaos of 1933, but also into the more general constellation of power relationships in Weimar Germany. CRIME STORIES
Criminalistic Fantasy and the Culture of Crisis in Weimar Germany
Todd Herzog, University of Cincinnati

Whereas the history of workers and labor movements has been widely researched, the history of work has been rather neglected by comparison. This volume offers original contributions that deal with cultural, social and theoretical aspects of the history of work in modern Europe, including the relations between gender and work, working and soldiering, work and trust, constructions and practices. The volume focuses on Germany but also places the case studies in a broader European context. It thus offers an insight into social and cultural history as practiced by German-speaking scholars today but also introduces the reader to ongoing research in this field.

The Weimar Republic (19181933) was a crucial moment not only in German history but also in the history of both crime fiction and criminal science. This study approaches the period from a unique perspectiveinvestigating the most notorious criminals of the time and the publics reaction to their crimes. The author argues that the development of a new type of crime fiction during this periodwhich turned literary tradition on its head by focusing on the criminal and abandoning faith in the powers of the rational detectiveis intricately related to new ways of understanding criminality among professionals in the fields of law, criminology, and police science.

This splendid book offers a fresh look at the extraordinarily violent cultural-political radicalism of the post-World War I era, which has long been obscured by the Manichean dualism of anticommunism/antifascism and the Cold War. This is a fascinating and vitally important bookWhat with the exciting ongoing publication this decade of Bonhoeffers complete works in English (16 vols.), this work of John Moses can be expected to draw in new players and to further inform and stimulate discussion of Bonhoeffer and his significance on a complex of issues crucial also in the English speaking world. The Prussian province of Saxony where the Communist uprising of March 1921 took place and two Combat Leagues (Wehrverbnde) were founded (the right-wing Stahlhelm and the Social Democratic Reichsbanner) is widely recognized as politically important for German history during this time. a superb study [that] makes an important addition to the scholarly literature. Ray Stokes, Centre for Business History, Glasgow University

In this first interdisciplinary study of this contentious subject, leading experts in politics, history, and philosophy examine the complex aspects of the terror bombing of German cities during World War II. The book places the bombing campaign within the context of the history of air warfare, presenting the bombing as the first stage of the particular type of state terrorism that led to Hiroshima and Nagasaki and brought about the Cold War era balance of terror. In doing so, it makes an important contribution to current debates about terrorism.

While unification has undoubtedly had major effects on Germanys political economy, the pattern of current policymaking preferences was established at an earlier stage, in particular, at the beginning of the Kohl-era in 1982. This book demonstrates that the three policy imperatives (neoliberal structural reform, European monetary integration, and unification) produced a policy-mix which, together with other structural economic and demographic factors, has had disappointing results in all three areas and hampered Germanys overall economic development.

Scholarship on the history of West Germanys educational system has traditionally portrayed the postwar period of Allied occupation as a failure and the following decades as a time of pedagogical stagnation. This study persuasively argues that long before the protest movements of the late 1960s, the West German educational system was undergoing meaningful reform from within.

The Normalization of Rule?
Edited by Mary Fulbrook, University College London

Praise for the German edition: So far there has been a dearth of studies on the economic history of the GDR, unlike the recent surge of general historical accounts. Based on an exceptional knowledge of the literature and well supported by a number of key, so far unpublished documents, this book fills the gap. Andr Steiner fully succeeds in his attempt, managing to produce from highly complex material a very accessible text for a wide readership without sacrificing analytical quality. H-Soz-u-Kult It is always a pleasure to see an expert in a field stepping back and distilling extensive empirical and historiographical knowledge into a short, accessible overview of the subject. Steiners little economic history of the GDR is just thata masterful treatment of recent research findings on all aspects of the GDRs economy and its development from 1945 to 1990. His excellent writing style makes it seem even shorter, and he rounds out the picture with a very useful bibliographic essay, short biographies of key actors, and some graphs. Economic History Review

The Berlin Wall, for many people, epitomizes the communist German Democratic Republic, founded in 1949 in the Soviet occupied zone of post-war Germany. But is repression and surveillance really all there is to the GDRs history? When the social history of the GDR in the 1960s and 1970s is explored, new patterns become evident. Contributors explore the ways in which lower-level functionaries and people at the grass roots contributed to the formation and transformation of the GDR.

BRINGING CULTURE TO THE MASSES

Control, Compromise and Participation in the GDR
Esther von Richthofen, Humboldt University, Berlin

Cultural life in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) was strictly controlled by the ruling party, the SED, who attempted to dictate how people spent their free time by prohibiting privately organized leisure time pursuits and instead offering cultural activities in state institutions and organizations. This book challenges the current assumptions about the GDRs social and institutional history; the author argues that the peoples cultural life in the GDR developed a dynamic of its own, determined by their own interests and by the input of cultural functionaries.

AFTER THE SOCIALIST SPRING

Collectivisation and Economic Transformation in the GDR
George Last, National Audit Office

Lasts book is a balanced account of a hitherto neglected field of research. It highlights the close, though conflictridden interaction and communication that characterized the relationship between party rule and society in the GDR. German Studies Historical analysis of the German Democratic Republic has tended to adopt a top-down model of the transmission of authority. However, developments were more complicated than the standard state/society dichotomy that has dominated the debate among GDR historians. Drawing on a broad range of archival material from state and SED party sources as well as Stasi files, individual farm records, and some oral history interviews, this book provides a thorough investigation of the transformation of the rural sector.

Andrew H. Beattie, University of New South Wales Winner of the Jean-Monet Thesis Prize

Praise for the German edition: This publication will spark a discussion about the role of the Catholic Church leadership in the GDR.
Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

From 1945 to 1989, relations between the Communist East German state and party authorities and the Catholic Church were contentious and sometimes turbulent. Drawing on extensive Stasi material and other government and party archives, this study provides the first systematic overview of this complex relationship and offers many new insights into the continuities, changes, and entanglements of policies and strategies on both sides. Previously undiscovered records in church archives contribute to an analysis of regional and sectoral conflicts within the church and various shades of cooperation between nominal antagonists.

"This is a timely, well-written and original take on a topic that has generated a great deal of controversy. Ever since its inception the Enqute Commission has been a magnet of attention for anyone interested in the dynamics of history and memory in post-communist Europe. But what Beattie so skillfully explores here are the dynamics of history and power, how the Commission's work was part of a wider and prolonged struggle in which the competing parties and their constituencies have sought to tap the past as a source of political legitimacy since 1989. The outcome is an engaging yet level-headed investigation into the Vergangenheitspolitik of unified Germany."

During the Cold War, Britain had an astonishing number of contacts and connections with one of the Soviet Blocs most hard-line regimes: the German Democratic Republic. There were strong connections between the East German and British churches, womens movements, and peace movements; influential Conservative politicians and the Communist leadership in the GDR had working relationships; and lucrative contracts existed between business leaders in Britain and their counterparts in East Germany.

JOURNAL OF EDUCATIONAL MEDIA, MEMORY, AND SOCIETY (JEMMS)

Editor: Simone Lssig, Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research Managing Editors: Peter Carrier and Wendy Anne Kopisch GEI Editorial Committee: Eckhardt Fuchs, Verena Radkau-Garca and Hanna Schissler Published on behalf of the Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research

Aspasia is an international peer-reviewed yearbook that brings out the best scholarship in the field of interdisciplinary women's and gender history focused on and produced in Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe. In these countries the field of women's and gender history has developed unevenly and has remained only marginally represented in the "international" canon. Through its contributions, Aspasia transforms "European women's history" into more than Western European women's history, as is still often the case, and expands the comparative angle of research on women and gender to all parts of Europe. Each volume of Aspasia contains: (1) an article section that is sometimes thematic; (2) a discussion Forum (whose topic in most cases will be related to that of the central theme of the volume); (3) and book reviews and essays. Forthcoming: Volume 4 2010 Special Sections: Gender, the Body, and Sexuality and Women and War Forum: The Birth of a Field: Womens and Gender Studies in Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe Volume 3 2009 Special Section: The Gender History of Everyday Life Forum: Six Historians in Search of Alltagsgeschichte Volume 2 2008 Special Section: Women Writers and Intellectuals Forum: Contemporary Women Writers and Intellectuals Volume 1 2007 Special Section: Womens Movements and Feminisms Forum: Is Communist Feminism a Contradictio in Terminis? JEMMS explores perceptions of society as constituted and conveyed in processes of learning and educational media. The focus is on various types of texts (such as textbooks, museums, memorials, films) and their institutional, political, social, economic, and cultural contexts. The construction of collective memory and conceptions of space, the production of meaning, image formation, forms of representation, and perceptions of the "self" and the "other", as well as processes of identity construction (ethnic, national, regional, religious, institutional, gender) are of particular interest. Special importance is given to the significance of educational media for social cohesion and conflict. The journal is international and interdisciplinary and welcomes empirically-based contributions from the humanities and the social sciences as well as theoretical and methodological studies.
