Spring Ahead With a New Best Friend For Free! Pet Ownership Helps Support Our Mental and Emotional Well Being
Spring is officially here. What better time to adopt a new, furry friend to bask with you in the sunshine? Whether its long walks, a jog through the park or a trip to the ocean, a new canine friend might be just the ticket. To help welcome spring, the Northwest SPCA (NWSPCA) is offering FREE senior pet adoptions throughout the month of April. The NWSPCA located in Oroville will provide free adoptions for senior citizens who are looking to adopt a new companion. Adoptions must be approved based on NWSPCA criteria. All adoptions include spay or neuter, first round of vaccinations, a microchip, and more. The Butte Humane Society, located in Chico also offers a free pet adoption program for seniors. It is well-known that pets provide companionship, and ease loneliness, provide entertainment, reduce stress, and encourage exercise and playfulness. Scientific studies exploring the benefits of the human-animal bond have found that pets can help by: Providing companionship. Pets reduce the feeling of isolation and loneliness. They give us a reason to get up and be active, to establish a routine. They encourage and stimulate us to maintain a social network and to interact with others. Encourage petting and cuddling our pets. A basic human need which provides sensory stress release. Pets also encourage communication, especially for persons who are depressed. Improving mood by encouraging laughter and playfulness. Encouraging exercise and other activities to keep our minds active and bodies sound. Getting out and walking your dog or brushing your cat stimulates activity and provides exercise which can boost your immune system. Establish routines that benefit emotional stability. Structure is very important for people. Having an animal that needs to be fed and walked on a regular basis provides a sense of purpose for the owner. All of these types of interactions lead to healthy lifestyle changes which can play important roles in easing symptoms of depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and anxiety. An alternative way for people to have the benefit of pet therapy is by visiting a local shelter. The NWSPCA is open for adoptions Monday through Friday, 10:00am till 4:30pm and Saturday, 11:00am to 3:00pm. The shelter is located at 2787 S. 5th Ave., Oroville 533-7636 or you can visit them on the web at www.nwspca.org. The Butte Humane Society is open to view animals available for adoption Sunday through Friday 2pm to 6pm and Saturday 11am to 6pm. Shelters are located at 2579 Fair St., Chico and 587 Country Drive, Chico 343-7917; or you can visit them on the web at www.buttehumane. org.

Jazz X-Press Welcomes Special Guest Chief Steve Williams for April 21st Concert in Harlen Adams Theatre
CSU, Chicos Department of Music presents the annual spring semester jazz concert, Up Jumped Spring (formerly titled Spring is Here), featuring the Jazz X-Press and Quincy High School Jazz Ensemble, Saturday, April 21st at 7:30 p.m. in Harlen Adams Theatre. Works will include big band arrangements, contemporary jazz works, and student compositions. Special guest artist for the concert is Chief Steve Williams, sax player/composer of the U.S. Navy Commodores Jazz Band. It is a great honor to have Chief Williams perform with us, said Rocky Winslow, Department of Music faculty member and conductor/music director/ trumpet player of the Jazz X-Press. Many of us were thrilled to hear Chief Williams playing this past November at the standing room only concert given by the Navy Commodores in Laxon Auditorium. Steve has been the lead alto for the Commodores for 18 years now and his playing will leave you breathless. The Jazz X-Press has been rehearsing several of Chief Williams compositions and are looking forward to performing them at the concert. Soloists for these works will include Chief Williams, Winslow, and members of the Jazz X-Press. The Jazz X-Press is also looking forward to performing for the first time an original composition by its lead trumpet player, Chris Navarette. The Quincy High Jazz Ensemble, under the director of Department of Music alum Tanner Johns, opens the concert. This is guaranteed to be another Jazz X-Press goody, so get those calendars marked and get ready for a fantastic night of entertainment, said Winslow. Advance tickets, at $15 adults, $13 senior citizens, and $6 students and children, are available at the University Box Office, 898-6333; add $2 for tickets purchased at the door. For disability-related seating please call 898-4325. Steve Williams, a native of Pensacola, Fla., joined the Navy Band Commodores in March 1994. He has been the groups lead saxophonist since 1997 and was its music director from 2003 through 2009. He has composed/arranged over 50 compositions for the Commodores including arrangements for guest artists Branford Marsalis, Eddie Daniels, Jerry Bergonzi, Jim Snidero, Ralph Bowen and Antonio Hart. Williams has appeared on six albums with the group and produced its recently released CD, Directions. As a civilian, Williams has appeared on several albums including the Grammy winning Caribbean Jazz Project/ Afro-Bop Alliance Big Band featuring Dave Samuels. He played lead alto sax with The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, toured with The Glenn Miller Orchestra and was a semi-finalist in the 1988 Hennessey Cognac Jazz Search. During his 35 year career as a free lance musician he has performed with Joe Williams, James Moody, Eddie Daniels, Marvin Stamm, Chris Potter, Bill Watrous, Dick Oatts, Lew Tabackin, Bob Mintzer, Linda Carter, The Temptations, Rita Moreno, Jim Neighbors, Linda Lavin, Hal Linden, The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, Al Hirt, Boots Randolph, Wayne Newton, Maureen McGovern, The Dallas Jazz Orchestra and many others. He has performed with The Fort Worth, Richmond and Baltimore Symphonies. Prior to joining the Navy Band, Williams was a bandmaster and sideman with Crystal, Princess, Norwegian Caribbean, Premier and American Hawaii Cruise Lines. In early fall 2012 he will release his first big band album entitled Jazz Nation with special guest Eddie Daniels. Williams attended North Texas State University where he played lead alto saxophone in the famed One O Clock Lab Band. While there he studied saxophone with Jim Riggs. He briefly attended Florida State University where he studied saxophone with Patrick Mieghan and improvisation with Bill Kennedy. During these collegiate years Williams led an ensemble that won the 1988 National Collegiate Jazz Competition. While in High school he studied music with his father, Dr. Grier M. Williams and saxophone with Dr. Eugene Gonzales. Williams and his wife Marie reside in Springfield, Virginia; a suburb of Washington, D.C. He has three children and four grandchildren.

Opera Workshop Presents Annual Spring Concert, Viva Opera, April 25th and 26th
shop singers perform the world premiere of local virtuosic pianist/ composer Justin McKays oneact opera based on Shakespeares The Tempest. Dido and Aeneas tells the love story of Dido, Queen of Carthage and her lost love, Aeneas, the Trojan warrior. Purcells music reflects tragic elegance, noted Yeh. The Tempest is filled with enchanted yet avant garde melodies that local composer Justin McKay has written especially for CSU, Chicos opera students. Also included on the program will be a short serenade sung by Chico dentist Dr. Alexander Jhang. We are very much looking forward to this performance, said Yeh. I hope people walk away from the concerts with a sense of delight and joy from the two contrasting styles of opera. Advance tickets, at $15 adults, $13 senior citizens, and $6 students and children, are available at the University Box Office, 898-6333 add $2 for tickets purchased at the door. For disability-related seating please call 898-4325.

Earth Day: The Histo

Each year, Earth Day -- April 22 -- marks the anniversary of what many consider the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. The height of hippie and ower-child culture in the United States, 1970 brought the death of Jimi Hendrix, the last Beatles album, and Simon & Garfunkels Bridge Over Troubled Water. Protest was the order of the day, but saving the planet was not the cause. War raged in Vietnam, and students nationwide increasingly opposed it. At the time, Americans were slurping leaded gas through massive V8 sedans. Industry belched out smoke and sludge with little fear of legal consequences or bad press. Air pollution was commonly accepted as the smell of prosperity. Environment was a word that appeared more often in spelling bees than on the evening news. Although mainstream America remained oblivious to environmental concerns, the stage had been set for change by the publication of Rachel Carson's New York Times bestseller Silent Spring in 1962. The book represented a watershed moment for the modern environmental movement, selling more than 500,000 copies in 24 countries and, up until that moment, more than any other person, Ms. Carson raised public awareness and concern for living organisms, the environment and public health. Earth Day 1970 capitalized on the emerging consciousness, channeling the energy of the anti-war protest movement and putting environmental concerns front and center. The idea came to Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, after witnessing the ravages of the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Inspired by the student anti-war movement, he realized that if he could infuse that energy with an emerging public consciousness about air and water pollution, it would force environmental protection onto the national political agenda. Senator Nelson announced the idea for a national teach-in on the environment to the national media; persuaded Pete McCloskey, a conservation-minded Republican Congressman, to serve as his co-chair; and recruited Denis Hayes as national coordinator. Hayes built a national staff of 85 to promote events across the land. As a result, on the 22nd of April, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment in massive coast-to-coast rallies. Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests against the deterioration of the environment. Groups that had been ghting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife suddenly realized they shared common values. Earth Day 1970 achieved a rare political alignment, enlisting support from Republicans and Democrats, rich and poor, city slickers and farmers, tycoons and labor

leaders. The rst Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts. "It was a gamble," Gaylord recalled, "but it worked." As 1990 approached, a group of environmental leaders asked Denis Hayes to organize another big campaign. This time, Earth Day went global, mobilizing 200 million people in 141 countries and lifting environmental issues onto the world stage. Earth Day 1990 gave a huge boost to recycling efforts worldwide and helped pave the way for the 1992 United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. It also prompted President Bill Clinton to award Senator Nelson the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1995) -- the highest honor given to civilians in the United States -- for his role as Earth Day founder. As the millennium approached, Hayes agreed to spearhead another campaign, this time focused on global warming and a push for clean energy. With 5,000 environmental groups in a record 184 countries reaching out to hundreds of millions of people, Earth Day 2000 combined the big-picture feistiness of the rst Earth Day with the international grassroots activism of Earth Day 1990. It used the Internet to organize activists, but also featured a talking drum chain that traveled from village to village in Gabon, Africa, and hundreds of thousands of people gathered on the National Mall in Washington, DC. Earth Day 2000 sent world leaders the loud and clear message that citizens around the world wanted quick and decisive action on clean energy. Much like 1970, Earth Day 2010 came at a time of great challenge for the environmental community. Climate change deniers, well-funded oil lobbyists, reticent politicians, a disinterested public, and a divided environmental community all contributed to a strong narrative that overshadowed the cause of progress and change. In spite of the challenge, for its 40th anniversary, Earth Day Network reestablished Earth Day as a powerful focal point around which people could demonstrate their commitment. Earth Day Network brought 225,000 people to the National Mall for a Climate Rally, amassed 40 million environmental service actions toward its 2012 goal of A Billion Acts of Green, launched an international, 1-million tree planting initiative with Avatar director James Cameron and tripled its online base to over 900,000 community members. The ght for a clean environment continues in a climate of increasing urgency, as the ravages of climate change become more manifest every day. We invite you to be a part of Earth Day and help write many more victories and successes into our history. Discover energy you didn't even know you had. Feel it rumble through the grassroots under your feet and the technology at your ngertips. Channel it into building a clean, healthy, diverse world for generations to come. source: earthday.org

Quick-Result Oral HIV Test Now Available Through Public Health Clinics
On-the-spot testing for HIV has gotten much easier: The Butte County Public Health Department Clinics are now using the oral HIV test that gives results in 20 minutes. Until now, rapid HIV testing through the clinics has required pricking a persons finger to test a spot of blood. Now, the person being tested for HIV places an absorbent pad above the teeth and against the outer gum. The person then gently swabs their outer gums. In as little as 20 minutes, the oral HIV test will indicate if HIV antibodies are present. Why is it so important to know your HIV status? Testing is one of the most important means of stopping the spread of HIV and getting HIV-positive people into early care and treatment, says Butte County Health Officer Dr. Mark Lundberg. It is important that individuals know that a positive test result is no longer a death sentence; however, finding out is critical to living a long and healthy life despite the infection and for preventing the spread of HIV to sexual partners. While survival rates of individuals living with HIV/AIDS have increased over the last 30 years due to improved treatment, little progress has been made in increasing the number of cases diagnosed early. In Butte County, approximately 40 percent of people test very late in their HIV infection and either already have an AIDS diagnosis or progress to AIDS within one year of an HIV diagnosis. Individuals who test early in the course of their disease and are aware of their positive status are more likely to modify their risk behaviors and therefore, less likely to transmit the disease to another. They also have the opportunity to be treated at an earlier stage, which can prevent or delay progression to AIDS and AIDSrelated complications. Effective treatment can also significantly reduce the chance of transmitting the virus to another. About one out of five of the more than one million Americans living with HIV dont know it, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The medical community can help if individuals know their HIV status. For some people, signs and symptoms of HIV can remain hidden from a few months to many years. Even without symptoms, an individual could spread the infection without knowing it. Oral HIV testing is available by same day or next day appointment at our Public Health Clinics in Chico or Oroville, Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm. Testing is FREE if you have Medi-Cal/ CMSP or are Family PACT eligible. Private pay testing is also available. For more information or to schedule an appointment in Chico call: 879-3665 and in Oroville call: 538-7341. To learn more about HIV/AIDS testing and/or any questions on how to protect yourself, please visit the Butte County Public Health website at www.buttecounty.net/ public health or call 1-877-STD-INFO.

Earth-Friendly Laundry Tips

(StatePoint) For an eco-friendly laundry day, consider the following: Be sure to run only full loads of wash. According to Discoverys Planet Green, the average household would reduce their carbon dioxide emissions by 99 pounds a year by running only full loads. Opt for cold water when possible, and consider a natural gas tankless water heater, which heats only the water you need when you need it. And with a natural gas dryer, you can dry on average two loads of clothes for the same cost as one electric dryer load. Avoid conventional detergents containing harmful pollutants. Instead, use homemade or natural products. Remember -- you dont need to dirty up the planet when you clean your clothes.

Recycle Those Old Electronics

(SPM Wire) You may be coveting that latest and greatest cell phone or tablet computer, but what should you do with your old ones? Each year, Americans generate approximately 2.4 million tons of used electronics, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the General Services Administration. Dont toss them out with the trash. Instead, recycle electronics at a certified "eCycling" facility, which lessens pollution and helps supports local jobs. Improper disposal of electronics, such as illegal dumping, can harm people and the environment through the release of such substances as lead and mercury. For more information about eCycling and to find local drop-off points, visit www.epa.gov and search for eCycling.

Perfect Marriage Proposal

(StatePoint) If youre planning to propose to your sweetheart, you may be feeling overwhelmed by the task at hand. With a little fun preparation, however,

1455 Myers St. Oroville 990-7002 or 534-7812 www.copadeoroeventcenter@vpweb.com you can take the stress out of one of the biggest moments of your life. Timing Matters If you want a resounding yes to your question, ensure its the right time for you and your signicant other. With a little nesse, you can nd out how your honey feels, and still make the question a complete surprise when the time comes. Watch a movie that involves a marriage proposal or mention the engagements of friends and acquaintances to gauge a reaction. This light detective work should give you all the information you need. Make it Personal The perfect proposal is different for everyone. The most important guideline is to consider the personality of your soon to be ance. For a traditionalist, you can simply take a walk through your favorite park, or the spot of your rst date, and get down on one knee. And while the JumboTron route is a perfectly acceptable option for a baseball lover who relishes the spotlight, not everyone wants their special moment to be a spectacle in front of thousands. If you or your intended are shy, you may need a quieter idea. Bake a cake with the proposal written in the icing, or print the question on a trivia card in your favorite board game. Next Steps Getting engaged is the rst step in a long wedding planning process. Next you will need to share the good news with your loved ones. Youll want to announce your engagement and wedding date right away to ensure everyone can make it to your celebration, but dont sacrice creativity.

HEALTHY LIVING

Louis here...
Well, the tennis tournament is upon us! Wow, Mom and Dad are gone many evenings, working I guess. I have a nice quiet evening: no loud TV, Dad doesnt come over and pet me all the time. You know, its hard to snooze when when you are always being bothered! My friend Denise is here from SF, and its good to see her again. Darwin and his family come on Friday, and Pat and Dave came on Wednesday or maybe Tuesday. I get my days mixed up cause its always a revolving door here during the tournament. My buddy Dave arrived late at night, but I was sure glad to see him. I was sorry they couldnt stay with us, cause every morning I would go out and visit with him while Pat was sleeping in. He would read his book in the morning sun, and we would visit. Maybe another time. Tennis time is busy Mom and Dad have many night shifts, so I dont get any scraps off the table. They feed me around mid-afternoon, and I dont get to eat with them. I eat sometime around evening after the sun goes down. By the time they get home, I have eaten, but so have they. No take home, no table scraps! Wow, Its like I am on a diet! And I dont need it! But I do like the quiet time. On Moms days off, she takes me to the dog park. I have met so many nice people. Let me tell you about little Lucy. She is cute as a bug, and plays with me. She was found in a dumpster in a box by a man who was in St. Croix on business. He heard a whine from the dumpster and looked in and saw a box moving. He took the box out and here was a cute little puppy. Can you imagine anyone doing that to a dog? Anyway he took it to the vet, and she was small but healthy. He called his wife to see if it was ok to bring her home. And thats how Lucy got here. She is fun to play with, and I like her. She is only about 5 pounds now, but I am gentle with her. She likes to run round and dig! They dont like diggers at the dog park, so her Dad is forever relling her holes. I guess they dont value the life of dogs there. She is so well behaved, and everyone loves her. I am sure that man has a great dog ahead of him. And then theres Walter. He was a rescue dog from up north. A shar pei. Nicest guy you every want to meet. He just bebops around the park like he knows everyone. We all like him. I have to tell you about my friend Paulette next door. Every time the phone rings in the morning, I think it is her and run and hide under the bed! I am not fond of our walks. Anyway, the other day she came over to play with me in the morning. I was sorta watching her to see if she was going to grab me and take me for a walk. After awhile when I was sure she wasnt, I went over to play with her. Well, big mistake! She grabbed me, and Mom came out with the harness for the walk! Drat, this wont ever happen again, I can tell you right now. Why does this woman think she has to walk me? I run enough back and forth around the yard chasing golf carts, mowers and Dilly! I dont need extra time on the road! Well I digress; I do like her though. Last week we went up north to visit my Moms family. I got to spend two nights at my half-sisters house. Thats what I call her. She calls me her brother! Anyway she lets me sleep on her bed with her. A really nice, soft bed, plus a yard to go out in, and I like this place. Nicer than the hotel, cause I cant go out unless Mom takes me. But, I do like to spend the night with my Mom and Dad. Mom lets me sleep on the bed, but she moves a lot, and so I just go to my bed and sleep there. Anyway, it rained most of the time we were there. Was I ever glad to return home. Warm again, nice lawn to lay on, and all my friends missed me! They came up to say, Where have you been? I am glad the trip wasnt too long, cause I miss my yard and home! Home sweet home!
