. 1 Given: A homogeneous disk A of mass mA is attached to a block B of mass mB using the cable and pulley system shown. The disk rolls without slipping. The system is released from rest. The masses of the pulleys are to be considered to be negligible. Find: For this problem, determine: a) the acceleration aB of block B after release. b) the tension T in the cable anchored to point G.

SOLUTION

Given: A T-shaped bar consisting of a bar (of mass m, length L) welded to the end of another bar (m, L) that is pinned at O. A bullet (mass mB) strikes a T-shaped bar at end C with a speed vB. The bullet becomes embedded in the bar immediately after the impact. All motion of the system is in a HORIZONTAL PLANE. Find: Determine the angular velocity of the T-shaped bar immediately after impact.

SOLUTION

Given: Consider the system shown below. The disks are assumed to be homogeneous, and the bar connecting the centers A and B of the disks has negligible mass. Let x represent the translational motion of center A of the disk on the left. The springs are unstretched when x = 0. Find: For this problem: a) Draw INDIVIDUAL free body diagrams of the two disks. b) Derive the single differential equation of motion (EOM) for the system in terms of the coordinate x, its time derivatives and, at most, the following parameters: m, k and R. c) What is the natural frequency of the system? x
