Paint
Perkins
campaign
complete
By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Moorestown Sun
The Perkins Art Center will
receive a nice makeover this
summer as the Moorestown fa-
cility completed its Paint
Perkins campaign last week
through donations from the
Moorestown community.
The campaign was estab-
lished about a year ago, Spe-
cial Events and Project Manag-
er Lee Bennett reported, and
raised more than $40,210 for
the project.
A big thank you goes out to
our community, whose gen-
erosity to our Paint Perkins!
campaign over the past year
will allow the painting of our
beautiful building to begin in
late spring, Bennett wrote in
a press release. Thanks to a
generous last push from our
board and staff, we have been
able to move forward on the
project; a historic paint analy-
sis was recently completed
and we are proceeding with
bids from four local painting
companies.
The money will be used for
the historic paint analysis,
several minor repairs to the
building, a complete strip job
of the old paint, and then the
actual painting itself. Bennett
said the centers main facility

Musician looks back on career
By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Moorestown Sun
For nearly a century, music,
family and education have been
constant streams running
through the life of Mary Bounds.
Now 98, the talented musician
looked back on a life in South Jer-
sey and Moorestown filled with
jazz, racial tensions, and most im-
portantly, her family.
This past St. Patricks Day,
Mary thrilled Burlington County
freeholders and visitors of the
county Office on Aging and Nu-
trition at the Bethel A.M.E.
Church in Moorestown, where
Mary was the church organist for
40 years, as she played piano
pieces for a stunned crowd, in-
cluding Freeholder Mary Ann
OBrien and County Office on
Aging Director Jeanne Borkows-
ki.
Born in 1913 in North Cape
May, Mary said she remembered
her father purchasing the family
an old Victrola when she was a
young girl.
Every single Friday after re-
ceiving his paycheck, her father
would visit a local music store
and purchase several records for
the family.
Old jazz musicians, operas,
even comedy Mary said her fam-
ily would laugh uproariously
when they listened to Burt
Williams, a popular late-19th and
early-20th comedian and vaude-
villian were their favorites and
her father would bring them
home each week and play them
for Mary and her brothers and
sisters.
We had stacks and stacks of
records. As he came home from
his job, he would stop at Dowells.
Wed all say, Pop, what did you
bring this time? Mary said.
When radios were invented,
every Saturday afternoon he
would have off from work and I
remember listening to all those
old tenor singers with him.
Growing up in Cape May, Mary
said her household was always
filled with music, but education
was also a priority for all of her
brothers and sisters. When her
brother quit the piano, Mary said
she asked her mother if she could
take lessons instead of him.
Lessons back then were only
50-cents, she said, but it was still
enough that her mother didnt
want to be burned twice by one of
her children wasting money by
quitting after only a few tries.
I would walk up there to my
lessons and we had a beautiful re-
lationship myself and my piano.
Thats where I got my classical
foundation. He was using litera-
ture from Theodore Presser. I
went through the six books and I
got to have a recital of my own.
My parents were so proud when I
had that church recital. My father
decorated the church; we had
beautiful palms in great big tubs.
I had that recital, and from then
on, music always moved me, she
said. My teacher wanted me to
come with him to make music my

In the April 4 edition of The

This years Arbor Day celebra-
tion will be held at the Perkins
Arboretum on Friday, April 27, at
10 a.m., and is sponsored by the
Moorestown Garden Club, the
Moorestown Improvement Asso-
ciation, Moorestown Township,
the Tree Planting and Preserva-
tion Committee and Public
Works.
The second-grade classes of
Baker School will perform.
Tree seedlings will be distrib-
uted.
This year, a 6-foot, white pine
Space Shuttle tree will be planted
at the Arboretum.
The tree was won by the tree
committee at last falls annual
Shade Tree Federation conven-
tion from the New Jersey
Forestry Service and will be de-
livered to the township this
spring in time for planting on
Arbor Day.
Why is it called a Space Shuttle
Tree?
In 1997, Astronaut Gregory
Linteris, a New Jersey native,
took the seeds with him on his
voyage on the Space Shuttle Co-
lumbia.
NASA gave them to the New
Jersey Forestry Service.
The seeds germinated in only
seven days, about half the normal
germination time. They grew
only 35 trees, which were later
dedicated to the memory of the
seven crewmembers who per-
ished on the Space Shuttle Co-
lumbia in 2003.

career, but I always wanted to be a school-
teacher. I said, no, I dont want to go any
further. I didnt stop playing though. When
I was about 12, the organist taught me the
foundations of a pipe organ. I became an
organist for our church.
It was a strange time to be growing up in
America, Mary said. Even in New Jersey,
racial tensions were high, and she attend-
ed a segregated school that was located be-
hind an all-white Cape May school.
Later on in her life, she would go on to
teach at a segregated school behind the old
Cape May High School. Shes the last sur-
viving teacher from that facility, she said.
Growing up during segregation and ex-
periencing the equal rights movement
firsthand, Mary said she always paid atten-
tion to the movement and related more
closely to the teachings of Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. than she did those of Mal-
colm X.
She was supportive of the NAACP when
it was developed and those in the equal
rights movement but she wasnt actively
involved with either.
We all had to deal with segregation
back then, but then again, we learned how
to make due. We figured out how to cope
with that, how to deal with racial hatred,
that sort of thing. It gave us a background
that most of us share, most of my peers in
our 80s and 90s. We learned how to deal
with it all. We went to the back of the bus;
we drank at the colored water fountains.
We learned how to deal, she said. There
were those who were very rebellious and
those of us that accepted it as a fact of life.
It drew us closer together.
She can still remember, to this day, the
first time she saw a member of the Ku
Klux Klan.
I can remember as a child that I was
about 5 or 6 years old. That was in the era
when the Ku Klux Klan arose. I can re-
member my mother and father talking
about lynchings, she said. One Hal-
loween, they had a parade in Cape May and
we went to watch. Here came four or five
men on horseback with their KKK regalia
on, and as a child, I thought that was their
Halloween costume. They had a Klan in
Cumberland County; they came down from
Millville and rode in the parade. It didnt
occur to me what it was; I thought it was
their Halloween costume. We accepted this
stuff.
Through her education, Mary said she
knew that she wanted to have a career in
teaching children. After graduating from
Cape May High School in 1929, she enrolled
in Glassboro College now Rowan Univer-
sity for a three-year teaching program,
the first of its kind offered at the college.
After graduating, Mary said the pick-
ings were slim for black teachers.
I graduated in 1932. From then on, I
was a schoolteacher and I specialized in
kindergarten and primary. Ive had some
extremely interesting teaching experi-
ences. At that time, black schools were seg-
regated. Those of us who came out of the
New Jersey teachers colleges they were
called normal schools found it was very
hard for us to get a teaching job in New Jer-
sey because those black teachers, they
stayed on the job until they died. That
might not sound not too wonderful, but it
was true, she said.
Unable to find a job in New Jersey, Mary
moved to North Carolina where she quick-
ly found a job teaching kindergarten for
three years. However, when Glassboro de-
cided to offer a four-year program to re-
ceive a bachelors degree in education, she
moved back to New Jersey.
Just a few months before school started,
in our opinion
M
oments after Rick Santorum
threw in the towel in his bid
to win the GOP presidential
nomination, the back and forth be-
tween President Obama and Mitt Rom-
ney began.
The Associated Press said the
Obama camp already is referring to
another Johnson-Goldwater cam-
paign. The Romney folks say the presi-
dent is trying to divide the country.
Obviously, these are critical issues
that are on the mind of every voter
(note sarcasm).
The bad news: We still have about
seven more months before Election
Day.
The good news: We have the
Olympics this summer to distract us
for a couple of weeks.
Maybe were being too pessimistic.
Maybe, this year, there will be a seri-
ous and thoughtful debate of the is-
sues, with both candidates presenting
their vision and ideas for the nation in
a respectful tone.
Or, maybe we get the 2012 versions
of Willie Horton, the Swift boat con-
troversy or a nuclear war scare (see
the aforementioned Johnson-Goldwa-
ter campaign). Hopefully, they wont
go all the way back to, say, 1828, when
allegations of murder and kidnapping
were bandied about.
The problem is that negative politi-
cal advertising works. It works well.
Ask Santorum and Newt Gingrich.
For whatever reason, voters respond
to personal attacks against candidates.
The more vicious, the better, it seems.
If it didnt work, the candidates would
stop doing it.
So thats the challenge for voters
this election year: If we want the can-
didates to act responsibly, discuss the
issues and generally treat voters with
the respect we deserve, we have to de-
mand it. If we want more of the same,
just continue to respond to the nega-
tive campaign ads.
Wed like to think that the candi-
dates will take the high road this year.
But were not holding our breath.
Seven months of this? Ugh
Petty shots between the president and his GOP challenger have begun
Go negative? It works
For all of the complaining about the
negativity and personal attacks in
political ads, the bottom line is that
they work. Voters respond to them.
Until that changes, expect more of
the same again this year.
Life was always full of music for Mary Bounds

We want to be true to the
buildings history. We found out
what it looked like in the past and
we want to be as accurate as pos-
sible, Bennett said, explaining
the need for a historic paint
analysis.
Bids for the work have been
made public and the project will
likely start in the late spring, Ben-
nett said.
The center received $15,000
from a grant from The 1772 Foun-

Moorestown Lunch Rotary, $1,000
from Capehart and Scatchard,

The remaining donations were
from the Moorestown community,
she said.
Throughout the campaign,
Perkins center representatives
said repainting the centers 1910

the historically important build-

continuation of the important
work that goes on inside.
