LA CAPLANA, GAVI PIEMONTE

The Guido family has overseen the vine growing and the wine production at La Caplana since the last century. The rst member of the family to run the vineyard was Natalinos grandfather. He had to deal with the disastrous phylloxera that hit this area in 1925. Fortunately he managed somehow to save the old Vigna Vecchia vineyard, the pride of the Caplana Winery. The care of La Caplana was then passed to Natalino's father Gerolamo, who kept on growing and planting vines on the high hills at Vignavecchia, a task that requires a lot of effort and hard work as the vines are planted on very steep slopes. Today, Natalino Guido is proud to be 'at the helm' of La Caplana, keeping his family's dedication to their winemaking and a family tradition alive in his distinctive wines.

Cascina Morassino, Barbaresco Piemonte

The 4 hectares Cascina Morassino is located in the steep Ovello zone of Barbaresco. Run by Roberto Bianco, age 38, and his father Mauro, it is one of Barbarescos oldest producers. Roberto and Mauro do everything themselves. They would never even think of passing off vineyard work to someone else. Roberto Bianco is a genuine farmer and a producer of enormous integrity. The Langhe has seen its wines undergo enormous manipulations to meet the demands of the market, to garner accolades from the press. Roberto has ignored all of this (though he has not passed unrecognized), opting to focus on naturally made wine with a keen attention to detail and respect for the inherent characteristics of Nebbiolo grapes. Robertos wines show the unique, fragrant side of Nebbiolo but they never lose the original spicy note typical of Barbbaresco. These wines show that Barbaresco in the modern day does not have to give up its deeper roots. Two selections of Barbaresco are made at Cascina Morassino: one from the Morassino vineyard (in the Ovello zone) and the other from remaining vineyards and labeled as Ovello. The Morassino is the more delicate of the two (the Ovello coming from harder soils and is more extracted and more tannic, and is aged in barrique).
Cascina Morassino, Barbaresco DOCG 2004 Vine variety: 100% Nebbiolo Aging: 24 months in 50 hl oak casks Alcohol: 14% vol. Medium age of vineyard: 40 years Tasting notes: A powerful wine with intense avors and soft and mellow tannins thanks to the old age of the vines. Perfect with reach dishes and red meat.

Aging for the Morassino is entirely in 15 hectoliter casks for 2 years while vinification takes place in stainless steel. Roberto disdains the use of enzymes and other additives, though he admits to have experimented with small lots of wine using them. Nebbiolo must be pure. There are not shortcuts, he says.

La Gerla, Montalcino Toscana

La Gerla lies on the hills in the heart of Montalcino. This modern winery is managed directly by the owner who bought it in the seventies from the family Biondi Santi. The farmhouse and its rooms were renovated and cleverly transformed into an impressive cellar that allows to stock the wines in perfect conditions. The vines were newly planted on the hills surrounding the winery at a hight between 300 380 meters above sea level. True to the idea that good wine is made with good grapes, the density of the vineyards has been kept very low with 3,000 plants per hectare. New and modern oenological machines and equipments were installed. Sergio Rossi the owner had worked for 16 years in marketing and publicity for different companies, until he became general director of an international rm. That was the year 1972, when he decided he needed to drastically change his life. It was at that crucial point in his life that Rossi choose to put to good use his oenological knowledge. He worked at rst for a couple of years in a Tuscan winery and decided than he wanted to start something on his own. And that is how La Gerla was born. In the years that followed the wines of La Gerla have encountered an enthusiastic response from critics and the public alike.

POGGIO SALVI, SOVICILLE TOSCANA

Roberto Bonucci manager of the estate

Bearing this in mind, the present owners have started their adventure in producing wine in Poggio Salvi, with great passion about 20 years ago.
Since 1980 when Mrs. Laura Bicchi and her mother Grazia Mari, helped by Mr. Roberto Bonucci have taken on the management of the estate, they have always worked at improving the quality of the products with the aim to regain their former fame. Continuous improvements of the vineyards were undertaken by planting excellent new Sangiovese Grosso (Brunello) and Merlot vines and the upgrading of local vines like Colorino, Ciliegiolo and Malvasia del Chianti. The low production of grapes per hectare, the scrupulous care in following every phase of the production from the selection during harvest right through the nal wine making by the very capable oenologist Leonardo Bellaccini. The use of precious French "tonneaux" in order to rene and the assistance of an important estate such as San Felice for bottling and packaging. All these have allowed Poggio Salvi to obtain remarkable wines such as Campo del Bosco, the Chianti Colli Senesi, the Refola and the Vin Santo. These factors, together with the owners' and collaborators' expertise has resulted into the good balance of quality and price and has given Poggio Salvi international fame and the ability to face future market challenges.

Italy Toscana

In his book "The history of vineyards and wine", Arturo Marescalchi (agricultural technician, as well as the Director of Agrarian Encyclopedia U.T.E.T.) tells that certain wines, such as Rosso di Costalpino and of Rosia, the Viteccio (the castle is situated a few hundred meters from Poggio Salvi), the Vin Santo di Sovicille and of Toiano, were already mentioned in a wine book of the year 1863, next to the famous French chateaux wines and other wines from old Italian noble estates. Santo Lancerio, who was Pope Paul III Farnese's (1468 - 1549) wine taster, said of one of his journeys in the area of Sovicille "it is one of the sunniest and better protected areas from the north wind, which produces excellent and rich wines, such as those of the Toiani hills close to Sovicille where the wines are excellent and worthy to be served at important dinners".

CASTELLO di QUERCETO, Greve, Toscana

The winemaker Alessandro Franois

Castello di Querceto is located at about 7 kilometers from Greve in Chianti. Its land extends over 190 hectares, 60 of which are planted with vineyards and 5 with olive trees, while the remaining are covered with oak and chestnut woods. The Castle, heart of the estate, dates back to the XVI century and the lands surrounding it are full of history. From 1897 the castle is property of the Franois family, which moved to Tuscany during the XVIII century from France, as one of its members was assigned to the Granducato di Toscana. At the beginning of the last century, Carlo Franois took over the estate and turned it from a country residence into an agricultural farm, assuming immediately an important role in the wine world: in 1911 it won its rst international enological prize and in 1924 it was one of the 33 founding members of the Consorzio del Vino Chianti Classico. In the old cellars there are still bottles dating back to the rst vintages of the 20th century. In 1978 Alessandro, Carlos grandson, followed in the family footsteps and began taking care of the estate management. Since than he has been the company director, managing the commercial and the promotional activities, helped in this task by his wife, Maria Antonietta who takes care of the estate image. They are supported by their daughter Lia, accounting manager and their son Simone, director of the whole production. Other very important persons in the estate with an essential role are the winemaker Giovanni Cappelli who gave a big support to the development of Castello di Querceto in the past 20 years and the agronomist Giacomo Grassi, responsible for the improvement and well being of the vineyards. Most of the vineyards of Castello di Querceto were planted between 1975 and 1985. The grapes are mostly red such as: Sangiovese Grosso, Canaiolo Nero, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Colorino, Merlot. The aim of the agronomist Giacomo is to obtain the best grape quality possible while respecting the environment. Organic fertilizers are used instead of chemical one. The ghting of phytopathologies is based on natural ways and, when necessary, very gentle phyto-medicines. The producion is kept to a low yield that goes from 45 to 50 hectoliters per hectar for the Chianti Classico and from 35 to 40 hectoliters per hectar for the crus wines.

AZIENDA AGRICOLA DRUSIAN FRANCESCO, San Giacomo di Bigolino

The Drusian Family has been producing wine for three generation. It all started with Grandfather Giuseppino in the middle of the nineteenth century, his son Rino followed on up until 1984, after which Francesco took charge of the winery. Francesco is deeply attached to his land and its grapes, and it is thanks to him that certain technological innovations were made in the cellar. Since 1998 the new Drusian Winery is at San Giacomo di Bigolino, surrounded by 15 hectares of vineyard. The winery is equipped with extremely modern means of making and bottling wine. Production at the moment is about 200 thousand bottles a year of Prosecco and Cartizze, thus it is limited in quantity and of an extremely high quality. No pesticides or insecticides are used on the vines, and only organic fertilizers are employed. Grapes are harvested manually and then pressed at a controlled pressure of one bar, so as not to affect the quality of the must. The wine is stored in low temperature vats and bottled without contact with oxygen, so as to maintain intact its fresh and youthful fragrance.

Terre di Santamaria, Trapani Sicilia

The landmark of the Terre di Santamaria winery is a 200 years old pine tree

It is in the middle of the spectacular landscape and villages around Trapani, that lies the Terre di Santamaria winery. This is the province of western Sicily that brings Italy to the centre of the Mediterranean, a unique territory where the ancient history meets a unique nature. Here for centuries man has grown the vines and enjoyed wine. Terre di Santa Maria is a rising and dynamic winery run by its owners Matteo and Franco Giacalone. The vineyards cover a total surface of 110 hectares all within the borders of Trapani province. Only a tiny fraction of the grapes produced are used for wines that carry the winery label. It goes without saying that these are the selected fruits from the best vineyards with the best terroir. The rest of the grapes are sold to other wineries. The landmark of the winery is a 200 years old pine tree that can be seen on the high plateau of Kelbi. The vineyards have been planted after careful consideration of the soil and micro climate

in order to nd a perfect match between the grapes and the terroir. Because of the hot Sicilian summers the hight of the vineyards is a critical point in order to ensure the necessary cooler nights. This is guaranteed by the perfect location on the high plateaux at 250 meters above see level. The winery uses indigenous grapes as well as some international one giving to all its products a clear Sicilian identity. At the moment Terre di Santamaria enjoys the collaboration and the knowledge of the famous Oenologist Riccardo Cotarella.
