Vanessa Asante Preliminary Task Evaluation

My media class and I were required to record a 30 second film clip following our own choice of story. I chose to go with a story of two school peers in sixth form in a school premises as part of the film requirement was to include a factor of authority, someone of a high/low class/ authority. My preliminary film You have no right represents two types of teenagers, one as hardworking and the other as an immature teen who just wants to have fun regardless of how annoying he may comes across to others because as far as he is concerned he is having fun. Shoot my preliminary film task in a school was most appropriate for my original idea of a student argument leading to the point in which a teacher needed to get involved, even though the argument was very petty. I did try my very best to stick to the 180 degree rule but with the positioning and structure of the furniture already in the room it was difficult to do so. I particularly like the fact that the room was quiet, making what the actors were saying clear and easy for the audience to understand. I also tried to use as many different forms and conventions while planning and shooting my preliminary film in terms of technical (a range of camera techniques & shots) and symbolic (clothing the teacher dressed in smart formal clothing). These codes and conventions give the text meaning and determine the response of the viewer. Institutions such as 20th Century Fox are more likely to produce my media product. This is because my short clip is very modern and portrays teenagers in a way in which they seem to be portrayed in films today. (Immature, doing things for their own pleasure without thinking of the consequences etc). I attracted my target audience (teenagers) in a subtle way by just simply including teenage actors in my film as this automatically in my view makes the audience feel more in touch with the film emotionally and also enables them to relate to it in some makes making them laugh due to the fact that they are able to relate to the story in one way or another. Throughout my process with my preliminary task I learnt a few new skills as to how to use the internet in an intelligent way especially when it came to research and programming and more importantly in view of films, to write a film script professionally. I didnt have many issues with the camera shots I made but the editing side of it was a different story. Because I had filmed last minute I did not have much time to edit my footage effectively, making it look basic. I also had a tri-pod which was partly damaged due to my lack of time managing skills which was a shame, as I had hoped to have used the camera more intelligently, to then use more codes and conventions in relation to film. Overall I was pleased with the result but wouldve liked to have had more footage to bring the clip timing from just 21 seconds to 30 as intended.
