Expressing Gratitude
The entire Wicker family wants to thank you for how you honored us at last weeks Anniversary Celebration. We will enjoy reading the many cards and we were blessed by your words of encouragement at the reception. You truly are my beloved brethren, my joy, and crown (Philippians 4:1). We thank you for receiving the preaching of the gospel (Philippians 4:15) and have been abundantly blessed by your generosity, a fragrant aroma, well-pleasing to God (Philippians 4:18). Nothing was expected, but everything is received with incredible joy and a sense of unworthiness. Most importantly, continue to pray for us (Hebrews 13:18). The staff and I will be baptizing at the beach again this Sunday afternoon. Jesus commanded: Make disciples of all the nations, baptizing in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19). We teach them to observe all things that Jesus has commanded. Baptism by immersion in water is the first step in the public profession of faith in Christ as you act out your confidence in the atoning death of Christ by being buried beneath the waters and raised up in the likeness of Jesus resurrection. The New Testament church exploded in growth on the day of Pentecost not long after Jesus had given His Commission and then ascended into Heaven. Those who gladly received His Word were baptized (Acts 2:41). Imagine 3,000 being immersed in close proximity to Herods Temple. The Mazar Excavations of the Temple Mount area in Jerusalem revealed Mikvaot, (Jewish immersionist baptisteries), a large enough number to be sufficient for 3,000. These pools were throughout first-century Palestine, where worshippers were immersed in a cleansing ritual or where a proselyte to Judaism made a public profession. John the Baptist urged repentance even for natural Jews with this symbolic act. Since the dead never bury themselves, in order to picture Christs work, an administrator is needed. Thats where the church enters the scene. When Gentiles came to faith and into the church, some Jews struggled with admitting them into fellowship. Peter settled the matter: Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have? (Acts 10:47). We embrace all ethnic groups into the Body of Christ. But we also recognize that the indwelling Holy Spirit is the mark of a true believer (Romans 8:9). Everything that we believe about Christs great saving work is pictured and solidified in immersion (Romans 6:3, 4). A radical change has occurred in our lives as if we had died, been buried, and resurrected. Jesus Himself submitted to baptism and came up immediately from the water (Matthew 3:16). How can any of us resist or refuse? We are certainly not better than Jesus. He had no need of repentance; He did that as our example, to fulfill all righteousness (Matthew 3:15). If you have received the Word you are welcome to talk to us about baptism this weekend.
