year, and parents are reminded to
ponder what to do with their offspring this
summer. If that didnt do the trick, then
Easter vacation surely did. Moms and dads
knowthey have just a fewweeks left before
the changing of the guardfromteacher to
parentwhen kids are home looking for
something to keep frombeingdare we

Sure, theres something to be said for
allowing the kids some carefree, unsched-
uled time, as we recall fromour own child-
hoods. But were talking 10 to 12 weeks of
off time and thats a lot of time to idle away.
We are fortunate here in our region to
have a plethora of summer camps and
activities to interest kids of all ages. Look
through these listings with your kids to
find just the right camps and activities to
keep both of you happy all summer long.

ALL KIDS FIRST CHILD CARE
All Kids First II is a childcare center for
infants, toddlers, and preschool children
who reside in or out of the Vineland
Completion of Millvilles historic Levoy Theatre is approxi-
mately 60 percent, with the exterior looking nearly complete
and the work mainly going on inside.
Lauren Van Embden (pictured), chair of the theaters
board of directors, led the Vineland Rotary Club and business
leaders from Millville on a tour last Tuesday. According to Van
Embden, there may be a soft opening in early August with
a grand opening celebration sometime in September.
The theater will seat approximately 700, including 250
balcony seats.
August will be mostly soft programming, acts that are flex-
ible with dates that can be bumped up to six weeks, Van
Embden said.
She also noted that booking of acts at the Levoy will be
coordinated with the Fine and Performing Arts Center at
Cumberland County College and Appel Farm/Landis Theater,
so that the same types of entertainment are not being staged
at the same time.
The first show will likely be a local production of the
Broadway musical The Music Man, staged by the Bridgeton-
based Off Broad Street Players, on August 3.
Local talent will be a big part of the programming, said
Van Embden. The first season will also include regular movie
nights, festivals and theme events.

Fire Sprinklers Save Lives
Tragedy struck Bridgeton, N.J. in the
early morning on April 9, 2012, when a fire
claimed the life of a 13-year-old girl who
was visiting the residence. Firefighters
responded to the fire at 3:15 a.m. to find the
house fully engulfed in flames. Despite mul-
tiple attempts, rescue personnel were not
able to enter the burning home. Four other
occupants of the home were members of
the same family who reside at the residence
on Church Street and were able to escape.
The family was treated at local hospitals for
their injuries, which appeared to be non-life
threating. The cause of the fire is still under
investigation; however, this terrible tragedy
could have been prevented.
NewJersey has seen an increase in the
number of house and apartment fires
recently, resulting in tragic fatalities and
catastrophic property loss. In many cases,
properly installed and maintained fire
sprinklers control (and typically extinguish)
a fire before the fire department even
arrives on the scene. More importantly, the
presence of fire sprinklers mitigates the risk
to individuals affected by the blaze, includ-
ing inhabitants of the structure and fire-
fighters who battle the fire.
Fire sprinklers are the only proactive
formof fire protection, providing firefight-
ers the time they need to do their jobs as
safely and effectively as possible, and help-
ing to avoid potential tragedies like the one
that occurred in Bridgeton this week.

County Programs Help Seniors
Congratulations to Cumberland County
Sheriff's Department [Sheriff Robert
Austino] and the Office on Aging for an
informative and fun afternoon at their Triad
meeting recently in Vineland.
The group is there to help seniors with
any questions, concerns or problems any-
time.
We enjoyed a talk about car safety, had a
tasty lunch, were serenaded by the Vineland
High School Madrigals, and were each
given a box of food.
The next meeting is June 27. Contact

I
Newspaper writers and editors put lots of time and care into every word that appears on
every page of each issue we produce. We know that every character will be scrutinized and
we take great personal pride in avoiding typos, grammatical miscues and unclear sentence
structures. Maybe thats why its slightly deflating to our precious egos when we discover
somewhere along the line that what readers care most about are simple
things like crossword puzzles and real estate transactions.
These two bits of content have been among our most popular
features week after week for the past four years. If space constraints
prevent us from publishing the crossword puzzle one week, we most
certainly hear about it from our readers.
Well, dear readers, have we got a treat for you. Starting this week,
we are now presenting a popular crossword puzzle variation called
the Prizeweek Puzzle (see page 9) and it is brought to you by our
friends at South Jersey Federal Credit Union (SJFCU). In fact, it was the folks at SJFCU
who brought the Prizeweek Puzzle to our attention to begin with. If you love puzzles and

Faces in the News
Community Pitches In for Playground Relocation
Nestled at the corner of N. Delsea Drive and Forest Grove Road, an active and
vibrant community called The Haven of Vineland, Inc. sits. The Haven consists of
The Golan Learning Center, Inc., The Event Center, Hebron Sports and Fitness, Inc.,
and Ramoth Church. The group currently has a need to move their playground to a
safer location, and in an amazing dis-
play of community support, the work
began on Wednesday, April 4.
The small, existing playground needs
to be moved for several reasons. First
and foremost is the safety of the chil-
dren and families who make use of it.
The new playground will be larger, nicer,
and safer. It will be situated behind the
building, away from the parking lot,
allowing for peace of mind for parents
whose children play there. In addition,
moving the playground will allow the
current location to be used for addition-
al parking and a more accessible
entrance to the facility.
The move, when completed, will
affect hundreds of children. Golan
Learning Center, Inc., provides services
for 105 students who use the area
daily. Hebron Sports and Fitness Inc.,
provides programs such as soccer, flag
football, basketball, cheerleading, and
T-ball each year, making the playground in demand for the siblings and families
of the participants. Scouts meet at the facility each week, Voices an Autism
Awareness Program meets there, and
children and families of the Ramoth
Church use the area as well. A large
and rapidly growing population will
benefit from the completed project.
The Golan Learning Center, Inc., has
applied for and received a grant for the
actual moving and inspection of the
playground equipment, but before the
grant can be used, a large area of land
behind the building needs to be
cleared. Requests went out to the com-
munity and three companies respond-
ed. Ransome CAT donated the use of
all equipment needed, Koering
Excavation donated man hours for the
operation of the equipment, and Wheat
Road Cold Cuts provided food for the
50 workers who participated.
Last Friday was a celebration of
accomplishment and camaraderie as
members of the community turned out
to thank the workers and provide lunch.
As a result of their generosity, the chil-
dren will have a larger, more beautiful,
and NJ Safety Approved playground.

SUMMER ACADEMY FOR KIDS
Where else can you send your kids to col-
lege for the summer? Registration has
begun for the popular and highly acclaimed
Summer Academy for Kids (and teens!) at
Cumberland County College. This years
nine-week program will be conducted
June 25 through August 24.
All classes must be prepaid at the time
of registration. In-person registration at the
office of Professional and Community
Education, in the lower level of the
Academic Building, Sherman Avenue and
College Drive, is available Monday-Friday
from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.

A special in-person registration is set to

DIBIASE DAY CARE opened its doors in
1989 to more than 120 children, aged new-
born to four. Responding to a need in the
community, DiBiase has evolved from an
infant and toddler day care center to a full-
fledged preschool educational program,
employing a fully certified teaching staff.
The summer day camp at DiBiase, for
ages five to eight, includes theme-based
activities and crafts, field trips, water games,
organized sports and lots more indoor and

THE ELLISON SCHOOL
Ellison Explorers and Little Explorers
Summer Camps include eight weeks of
theme-based activities combining fun and
learning with the added bonus of many
special guests and exciting field trips. This
year's themes include Gold Rush, Around
the World Week, Become an E-CSI, Sea
Creatures and Ocean Adventures, Center
Stage, The Great Outdoors, Silly Science
and Advanced Robotics, and Time
Travelers. Some special guests include a
real rodeo cowboy who will teach the kids
how to rope a bull and perform roping
tricks, Appel Farm actors, the CSI unit from
Cumberland County, and local musicians. A
sampling of field trips include days at
Adventure Aquarium, Cape May Point,
Magnolia Hill Studios, Garden State
Discovery Museum, and Nifty Fifty. Theyll
even walk the plank of a real pirate ship.
Ellison Explorers is open to campers in
Kindergarten through sixth grade. Little
Explorers begin at age 2 and go through
preschool. All programming is age specific.

LITTLE LAMB PRESCHOOL will offer a
seven-week hands-on summer camp for
your active child. Be Active With Us This
Summer is their motto. Summer Camp
runs July 3 through August 17. They offer
three age-appropriate programs: Wee
Lambs (2-year-olds), Little Lambs
(preschoolers) and Keeners Kids Active
Club (6- to 7-year-olds). All programs will
have specials, like pony rides, ice cream
truck, craft time, water days, bike or trike
days, and special visitors (fire department,
magician, etc.). Children will enjoy play-
ing on two different playgrounds on the
property. The staff consists of certified
teachers and preschool para-professionals
working together to implement an active
theme, such as Circus Week,
Transportation, By the Sea. Little Lamb

and a tomato garden for the summer.

YI'S KARATE OF VINELAND
Students of Yis Karate of Vineland learn
and practice the martial art of Tang Soo Do
(Traditional Korean Karate), under the

YMCA OF VINELAND
YMCA summer camps are open to anyone
who purchases a programmembership for
$13. Four camping groups are divided by age
Mini Me (three to five); Camp Hiawatha (six
to eight); Camp Merrywood (nine to fifteen;
includes roundtrip transportation fromthe
Y). For $20 per week, before and after-camp
care is available. The camp day runs from9
a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
Situated on an 80-acre site in Pittsgrove,
Camp Merrywood encourages socialization
among pre-teens and teenagers while learn-
ing newskills and enjoying naturecell
phones and electronic items are prohibited.
Camper activities include a newly
refurbished mini-golf course, arts and
crafts, hiking, swimming, biking, archery
and zip line.
Two groupsaged six to eight, or nine to
15may also choose one of 12 different
weekly YMCA Sports Camps. Each sport
emphasizes the rules, techniques, drills and
sportsmanlike conduct. Other specialty
camps offered are Firefighter Camp, led by
Vineland firefighters; Cooking Camp; and
Performing Arts Camp.

Inspired
At what would become Sea Isle City, Landis
imagined a city akin to Venice, Italy.
T
he June 1879 newspaper
announcement was simple and
straightforward. It read, Charles
K. Landis, of Vineland, has been
granted a divorce on the ground of desertion.
And with that, the town founder closed the
door on one chapter in his life and began
another.
Landis had grown restless by the end of
the decade, writing in his journal that he
must do something. He had turned his
attention to Cape May County and, accord-
ing to Jeffery M. Dorwarts book Cape May
County, New Jersey: The Making of an
American Resort Community, had attempted
to thwart the monopoly the West Jersey
Railroad had in the area by establishing a
new rail system in the county. What stood in
his way, however, was raising the funds for
such an endeavor, and the project collapsed
before it really got started.
Landis then decided to follow the old
adage, If you cant beat em, join em, and
approached West Jersey Railroad heads
William Sewell and John C. Stevens about
helping to develop Sewells Point and
Poverty Beach, but as Dorwart reports, he
was rebuffed by the bosses.
Although nothing came of these plans,
they managed to draw Landiss attention to
this shore area where a good amount of
property was waiting to be developed into
resort communities. In particular, the barrier
islands of the county were as inviting as the
land on which Landis and Richard Byrne
established Hammonton 20 years earlier.
Vinelands founder set his sights on
Ludlams Beach and began doing what he
did bestdesigning a city. In this case, the
criteria differed from the agricultural com-
munities he had previously established and
even manufacturing would not be a consid-
eration as it had been in Vineland. Instead,
according to Dorwart, this new town would
become what he called his sanitary and art
city by the sea.
With the establishment of Vineland,
Landis had envisioned an extremely wide
main avenue, tree-lined streets and farms
and vineyards surrounding a city that would
be filled with residents who had relocated
from other parts of the country to enjoy the
healthy climate and fertile soil of his creation.
His plans for Ludlams Beach, however,
were styled after the sites he witnessed on
his European trip five years earlier when
the idea for such a community may well
have been conceived.
According to Dorwart, Landis prepared
sketches for the proposed city, complete with
a design for a protected harbor and a thou-
sand-foot wooden pier and pavilion. Landis
envisaged a seaside city with an elaborate
canal and drainage system and public baths
and fountains somewhat like Venice, Italy. He
wanted to build Italian-style piazzas and
public buildings decorated with Renaissance
artwork, sculpture, and statuary.
The designs also included a grand hotel
that incorporated reading rooms as well as
wide verandas. Landis also considered the
area a prime location for a marine science
lab and approached the University of
Pennsylvania about establishing such a
research facility there.
Landis wasted no time in obtaining titles
to Ludlams Beach. His homework turned up
information that the Ludlam family, a promi-
nent Cape May County clan, had heirs who
had moved to the Midwest. Dorwarts
research indicates that the Ludlams were a
landowning family who had significantly
increased their land holdings in the 18th
century through sheriff sales.
Landis sent his chief clerk, John L. Burk,
to Ohio and Illinois to visit with the Ludlams
as well as another New Jersey family, the
Edwards, to buy their share.
One member of the Ludlams who
remained local was Thomas E. Ludlam, who
is described by Dorwart as a prominent
Dennis Township businessman. Landis
made his acquaintance and soon surrounded
himself with a series of investors, like Philip
P. Baker, a Cumberland County legislator
and merchant from Vineland; Jonathan
Cone, whose steamboat traveled the route
from Cape May to Philadelphia; and John
Wright, a Camden County resident and heir
to the fortune held by the Cooper family.
Slowly, the pieces began to come together
to create a resort town that was based on
Landis vision. But there was still a substantial
amount of business waiting to be transacted
and technical details that needed attention
before this island would be transformed into
what current local residents and summer
vacationers refer to as Sea Isle City. I

Vineland Honors Returning Vets
The City of Vineland would like to
honor returning soldiers who have served
in the military over the last 10 years in a
public recognition ceremony on the steps
of City Hall this spring. If you have been
back for some time and would like to be
included in this event, please call the
Mayors office at 856-794-4011. We will also
continue to present one-on-one recognition
in more private ceremonies in the Mayors
office if that is what the soldier prefers.
Since Privacy & Confidentiality laws
restrict information regarding returning
veterans, we are depending on the family
members of those veterans to notify us of

Senior Care Ministry
The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer
has established a Worship Ministry at area
Senior Care Facilities. Michael J. Keyser,
coordinator of this ministry, leads the wor-
ship service. He is assisted by Sr. Pastor
Gary N. Stiegler and members of the
Redeemer congregation. This outreach to
residents provides residents with a reli-
gious experience at a time when they are
unable to attend regular services at their
respective places of worship.
Keyser began his ministry in Ohio
where he conducted worship services and
Bible studies at senior care facilities for
over seven years. He recently moved to the
area to be closer to family.
A graduate of Princeton University, this
retired healthcare financial consultant has
published four works of fiction and is cur-
rently writing a novel about ranch life in
the West. Keyser has three children and
eight grandchildren.
Serving more than 250 families in the
greater Vineland area, the church is located
at 2384 E. Landis Avenue, Vineland,
between Spring and Brewster roads.

year history. Acknowledging
Vinelands August 8, 1861
birthday, local artists are free
to enter their artistic represen-
tation of Vineland history on
canvas or via art photography.
But, talent with camera and paint is not
all one needs to place an item on exhibit
during the August show. If you have a fami-
ly photo with unique features that tell an
interesting story about Vineland or
Vineland residents, you are encouraged to
pick up a registration form at the Vineland
Public Library.
If selected, your photograph must be a
minimum of 8 x 10, matted, framed, and
wire hung. The photo must be captioned
with the story behind the photo relating to
an aspect of Vineland history. Original or
an enlarged/enhanced copy of the original
are accepted. The registration deadline is
July 14, and the ready to hang work must
be submitted by July 28.

Prescription Program Benefits
Patients and Local Business
The CompleteCare Health Network is
leveraging a federal program locally to help
patients afford their medications. By partic-
ipating in the 340B Drug Pricing Program,
CompleteCare is able to offer all of their
patients, regardless of income or insurance
status, a way to access medications at a
lower cost. Additionally, by partnering with
local, predominantly family-owned phar-
macies in the areas they serve, the organi-
zation is helping to keep those prescrip-
tions dollars in the community.
The 340B Drug Pricing Programresulted
from enactment of Public Law 102-585, the
Veterans Health Care Act of 1992, which is
codified as Section 340B of the Public
Health Service Act. The 340B Drug Pricing
Program is managed by the Health
Resources and Services Administration
(HRSA) Office of Pharmacy Affairs (OPA).
Section 340B limits the cost of covered out-
patient drugs to federally-qualified health
centers, such as CompleteCare. Participation
in the Program results in significant savings
estimated to be 20 percent to 50 percent
on the cost of pharmaceuticals.
Accessing the program is simple. All
CompleteCare patients are given a special
drug program card at their first visit. Then
patients simply present their card when
they fill their prescription at the local par-
ticipating pharmacy and the savings are
immediately discounted. The exact amount
of savings varies and depends on the drug.
Since CompleteCare began offering the
340B program in 2010, its grown from
four participating pharmacies to 12.

the affordable medication program.

Clothing Drive Held in Honor of
100th Birthday of Girl Scouting
Girl Scout Troop 54611 is holding their
second annual clothing drive. In honor of
the 100th birthday of Girl Scouting the girls
are trying to collect 100s of gently used
clothing to be donated to local shelters. The
girls will collect, wash and separate the
clothing for distribution. The clothing drive
will run through May 5, 2012. If you have

YMCA Sign-Ups Underway for
Spring II Classes
Community members are invited to par-
ticipate in Spring II classes at the Vineland
YMCA. Registrations are currently under-
way. This is for youth sports, adult exercise
classes, and family programs. These will
run from the week of April 23 through the
week of June 16. Classes will meet for eight
weeks during day or evening hours.
This session includes popular ongoing
offerings, such as Zumba and Spinning.
Among the new additions to the roster are
Hoops for Boomers, Beginning Belly
Dance/Yoga Combo Class, and
Yoga/Pilates. Youth sports range from
indoor dance and basketball to outdoor T-
ball and soccer.
Many parents appreciate the Child
Watch While You Work Out service at the
Y. This is available on weekdays from 8:30
a.m. until 12 noon, then again from 5:30 to
8:15 p.m. On Saturdays, it is available from
8:30 to 11 a.m. The fee is $1 per hour for
facility members and $1.75 per hour for
program members.

A Foodies New Outlook
Our food columnist returns 15 pounds lighter and
eager to make amends for past eating habits.
B
efore we were so rudely interrupt-
ed, I was telling you about my lat-
est epiphanygood word, that one,
one of my favorites, feel free to use
and claim it as your ownregarding food, life
and the delicate balance that exists therein.
The date was last December, seemingly
already a lifetime past. And, I am happy to
report, 15 pounds ago.
Faithful readers will recall my need for
hernia surgery just prior to Thanskgiving.
That, thankfully, went quite well.
Then theres the rest of the story. In a
word: Diverticulitis.
A little lower intestinal tract gift that
keeps on giving. Ill spare you the horrific
details, this being a family publication and
all. Suffice to say that this latest tap on the
shoulder from God wasnt lost on yours truly.
My epic eating adventuresone former
publisher referred to me as an intrepid
dinerwould require even further modifi-
cation. And yeah, we see you now reading
this, angrily hissing out something like
Boo-hoo, the poor man ate too much food.
Will he cry now?
Wish we could argue with you, but you
happen to be right.
However, in a country where obesity
now stands as our number one health hazard,
having replaced even cigarette smoking in
that ranking, there is a bizarre sense of uni-
versality to my message.
Like the old adage Never trust a skinny
chef, I suppose the same could be true of
food writers.
But lets wander back on-message,
because there is a bright light at the end of
this tunnel, somewhere, I promise.
As I reflect back upon the stress, laziness
and just plain stupid decision-making that
resulted in my health issues, I now believe
that I know how to fix them.
Ive developed, in the language of therapy-
speak, coping skills. Where food is con-
cerned that begins, as I do most of my
mornings, with oatmeal.
Or more accurately, my latest obsession:
McCanns Imported Quick and Easy Steel
Cut Irish Oatmeal. Firmly entrenched on the
oat bandwagon for almost a decade, we now
believe that the zenith has been achieved
with regular consumption of this stuff.
Smaller in size and resembling rounds of
cous-cous, these oats aint no joke.
Though they take a bit longer to cook
and are more cantankerous than others, the
taste and texture are a genuine reward.
Look, Im not gonna lie to you. Most oat-
meal tastes and looks like, well, gruel. (I am
reminded of the famous breakfast hall scene
in Oliver, with the lead character plaintively
asking for More please, sir? Evidently oats
were not on the bill of fare that day.)
But add some fruit, like I do with prunes,
bananas or berries and youve got a real
breakfast. Or even just a spoon of sweet,
natural maple syrup, an incredibly versatile
ingredient that incidentally should have a
place in all of your refrigerators right now.
During my unintended absence, time, as
it is wont to do, has continued its inexorable
march. Tooling around the Vineland area
recently, weve spotted several food enter-
prises that we hope to be telling you more
about in the near future.
We visited one today, the Sao Paolo
Bakery on The Boulevard between Landis
and Wood streets. (This spot has a particu-
lar nostalgia for me, as my grandfather and
two of his brothers owned and operated a
service station at the corner of Wood Street
for most of the last century.)
Once within, we were quite impressed at
the wide array of both Spanish and Italian
baked goods. We purchased a nice soft loaf
of round bread and four large pastries for
the princely sum of five bucks. That alone
warrants a return. They also have a nascent
Mexican eatery, called SanBlas Restaurant,
open just three months right next door.
Then there is the spacious Italian market
just being completed on Route 40 in Buena
Vista Township. They look almost ready to
open, and when they are, well be there too.
Just this week, longtime local landmark
The Savoy Inn has opened a massive out-
door facility called Luna's Outdoor Bar and
Grille at the Savoy. It promises light fare,
sushi, grilled items and live entertainment.
Finally, a good friend of ours has been rav-
ing about the new Double Eagle Saloon at
1477 Panther Road in Vineland since the time
of our disappearance late last year. The lively
sports bar, which most will remember as for-
merly Good Sports, now serves an array of
BBQ specialties, big burgers and craft beers.

reetings! During my week off for
spring break, I got quite a few
things accomplished that I had
put on the back burner. I enjoyed a few
outings, spent time with family and
friends, and, as usual, whipped up some
new recipes in my kitchen.
The Almond Coated Chicken in this
weeks column is one that I came up with
after finding some chicken tenderloins in
my freezer, and I just didnt want the
same old chicken.
I decided to dip it into almond flour,
which I use in my baking, but I was all out
of it. However, I found some slivered
almonds in my freezer and made my own
almond flour by grinding them in the food
processor. Then I added favorite season-
ings, dredged the chicken into beaten
eggs, then into the seasoned almond flour,
drizzled with EVOO, baked them, and,
wow, did the chicken turn out tasty!
This recipe is a keeper in my house for
sure. Hope you give it a try, and enjoy it as
much as my family and I did.
Simple Asparagus Salad
30 stalks asparagus, washed, ends
trimmed and discarded, and steam
asparagus just until fork tender
2 lemons, juiced
2 tbs. apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
Sea salt, to taste
Black pepper, to taste
Once asparagus is steamed, drain and
dry the stalks before placing them in the
refrigerator to completely chill. In a small
bowl, mix together the lemon juice, vine-
gar, olive oil, salt, and pepper, and set
aside. Once asparagus is chilled place on a
serving dish and drizzle with the dressing.
Serve.
Almond Coated Chicken
10 - 12 boneless, skinless chicken
tenderloins
2 cups almond flour
1/4 cup Parmesan cheese
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 tsp. onion powder
1/2 tsp. dried oregano
Sea salt, to taste
Black pepper, to taste
3 eggs, beaten
Extra virgin olive oil
Preheat oven to 400. Grease a 9x13-
inch baking pan with non-stick olive oil
cooking spray, and set aside. In a bowl,
add the almond flour, Parmesan cheese
and seasonings, then set aside. Dredge the
chicken tenderloins into the beaten eggs,
then into the almond flour mixture until
well coated on both sides. Place the ten-
derloins in one layer onto the prepared
baking pan.
Drizzle the chicken lightly with extra
virgin olive oil and place pan into the
oven. Bake for 20 minutes, then remove
pan from oven, flip chicken and bake for
another 15-20 minutes, or until clear
juices flow when the chicken is pierced.
Serve.

Delsea Hosts National Speaker on Bullying
The Delsea Regional
School District hosted
nationally known speak-
er, Mr. John Halligan, at
a special program for
community members on
Thursday, March 1, as
well as for students on
Friday, March 2. His
presentation, Ryans
Story, was a dynamic
and powerful sharing of
his painful story about
his sons bullying. His
story now educates oth-
ers so that bullying inci-
dents can be prevented from ruining more peoples lives.
Halligans son, Ryan, died due to suicide on October 7, 2003, after being bul-
lied by classmates at school and online, when he was 13 years old. Halligans
presentation included strategies for families and for students about how to deal
with bullying, cyber-bullying and teen depression.

Four More Appointed to
Sacred Heart Board
Sacred Heart High School Rector, Monsignor John
Burton, has announced four additional members to
the newly formed Board of Limited Jurisdiction, which
will oversee the local Catholic high school.
The four, all Vineland residents, are: Dr. Tom Dwyer,
President and CEO of Premier Orthopaedic
Associates; retired Dupont Corporation Engineer
Ernest ORourke Jr., a 1961 alumnus; former Sacred
Heart High School Advisory Board member Beth
(Pierantozzi) Catalana, a 1982 alumnus; and Victor
LaTorre Jr., a 1978 alumnus, also a former SHHS
Advisory Board member.
We welcome these four extremely talented and
devoted individuals to the Board, and were pleased to
add their expertise and energies to our efforts, said
Monsignor Burton. They will each play integral roles,
as will our entire 11-member Board, he concluded.
Appointees to the remaining three Board vacancies
are expected to be named within the next week.
Currently involved in a high-profile fundraising cam-
paign to cover a budget shortfall that threatened clo-
sure of the iconic local parochial high school at the
end of the 2011-12 school year, the Board is preparing
to tackle complex issues of
staff consolidation, admin-
istration, and academic
structure. The fundraising
objectives will assure finan-
cial viability for the school
through the 2015-16
academic year.

opportunities to get in on the action on the Avenue.
I
ts springtimea time for rebirth,
renewal, and beautification. One of
Main Street Vinelands most endur-
ing beautification projects is our
two Planting Daysspring and fall. This
project, an initiative of our Design
Committee, is a particular favorite of mine
because it brings into play much of what a
good Main Street project should do:
It helps to beautify our downtown
particularly our mini-parks and other focal
pointsmaking it more attractive to shop-
pers, visitors, and business owners alike.
It also brings together volunteers
not only from Main Street Vineland, but
also other area organizations, as well as
students and teachers from area schools.
This forges strong partnerships within the
community and also gives a cross-section
of volunteers the opportunity to rack up
some volunteer hours to qualify for the
Presidential Volunteer Service Award I
mentioned in a previous column.
This years Spring Planting Day will
take place, rain or shine, on Saturday, May
5, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, at the mini-
parks at Landis Avenue and the
Boulevard. Depending on the number of
volunteers we have, we may also work at
some of the other focal points along
Landis Avenue, such as the pedestrian
alleyways. Though we will have some
tools and equipment available, we are rec-
ommending that you bring hand tools and
comfortable gardeners gloves, if you have
them, so enough equipment will be on
hand. Ivy Acres of Vineland will be donat-
ing the flowers again this year.
This year, however, we are doing some-
thing a bit different. We would also like
you to be on hand the Saturday before
(April 28) for a Spring Clean-Up Day. This
will take place at the same times and the
same locations. After a long winter, the
mini-parks and other focal points will
need to be prepared for planting. Weeds,
unwanted brush, and trash will need to be
cleared away to leave the soil ready for the
flowers. So, well need as many of you as
possible both days. After the work is done,
well have pizza for you back at the Main
Street Vineland office.

We not only want people to come down
to look at beautiful flowers. We also want
people to shop downtown and think of our
many downtown businesses first. This part
of a broader Keep It Local Campaign
was started by our Promotions Committee
to make people aware of the many great
things to see and do downtown.
The kick-off date for the Keep It Local
Wednesdays campaign will be April 25 and
plenty of bargains, specials, and fun will be
in store. Your invitation to a wide variety of
Wednesday-only specials will be a free dis-
count card that will be available at the Main
Street Vineland office and at participating
merchants. These merchants will be dis-
playing a special decal. Their Wednesday
specials will be listed on the Main Street
Vineland website, so you can plan ahead.
Some special promotions and events
will be worked into the campaign. For the
April 25 kick-off a Name Your Own
Price promotion on great food will take
place at Lucianos FreshMarket in Landis
MarketPlace. The popular Lunch on
Landis returns May 16 through 22, with
$8 lunch specials at participating restau-
rants. Also, a Downtown Sidewalk Sale is
being planned for Saturday, July 28. More
special events may be offered through
August. Pick up your discount card and

Birding and Botany Walks
See bald eagles, red-bellied turtles,
kingfishers, and a variety of plants and
habitats, as the Citizens United to Protect
the Maurice River (CU) holds events
along the Riverwalk in Waltman Park,
Millville. The leaders of these walks have
a great time sharing the unexpected mar-
vels of this urban oasis.
The April walks are perfectly timed for
the arrival of migratory songbirds, and
some great emerging plant life. The April
walk start at Waltman Park near the pond
on Saturday, April 21 at 9:30 a.m. and then
again on Tuesday, April 24 at 9 a.m. Great
for the entire family, no reservations are
necessary, just an enthusiasm for the great
out-of-doors.
Also of note, CU Board of Trustees
member, Laurie Pettigrew, has been hon-
ored at the Conserve Wildlife
Foundation's annual Women and Wildlife

Cherry Blossom Festival.
So far, 6,000 people from all 50 states
and more than 25 countries have partici-
pated in the poll, and one of the three
cherry trees has held a commanding lead
since the January launch.

announced on National Arbor Day on
April 27, 2012, the last day of this year's
Festival in Washington, DC.

Maurice River Cruises. Two-hour
cruises on the Maurice River leaving
from the municipal pier in Millville
through April 23. These cruises are
sponsored by the NJ Audubon's Cape
May Bird Observatory and are prima-

part of river travelled is between the
Peek Preserve and the Maurice River

By voting in the poll and purchasing a
cherry tree, Americans can bring the
Centennial Celebration to both their com-
puter and backyard, said Diana Mayhew,
president of the National Cherry Blossom

The three finalists were included in the
gift from the mayor of Tokyo in 1912 and
have become favorites along Washington,
DCs Tidal Basin, as well as in yards, parks
and neighborhoods across the United
States.
The Arbor Day Foundation is a non-
profit conservation and education organi-
zation of one million members, with the
mission to inspire people to plant, nurture

The National Cherry Blossom Festival

FAMILY RUN/WALK TO BENEFIT ROSSI STUDENT
The Dream Foundation is again sponsoring a "Run for Michael" (5K Run
and 1K Walk) on May 20 at the Bellview Winery in Landisville to raise funds to
help families with children facing serious illnesses or other crises. One of the
beneficiaries is Michael Barner, 13, a 7th grade Rossi Middle School student
diagnosed with a rare and severe bone marrow disease called aplastic anemia
three years ago. The race begins at 10 a.m. Registration begins at 8 a.m.
Proceeds from the event will also be used by the Dream Foundation to
help families in the Delaware Valley burdened by overwhelming medical
bills. A portion of the money raised will be donated to fund research
through the Aplastic Anemia Foundation.
In addition to the race, the event will feature entertainment, vendors,
feather hair extensions, and wine tasting for adults. Advisors of school clubs
who would like to have students perform at the event should contact Roslyn
Wright at 297-8927 or email her at rosmwright@yahoo.com. Vendors are still

The Vineland(NJ) High School
Class of 1967 will host its 45th
Class Reunion on June 23, at the
Greenview Inn in Vineland, at 7 p.m
until midnight. Cost is $50 per per-
son, which includes an extensive
hot and cold hors d'oeuvres and
dessert table, coffee, tea and soft
drinks. There will be a cash bar.
Music will also be provided.
The reunion committee is cur-
rently trying to locate some class
members. If you know of someone
who has not received an invitation,
please send an email to cham-
phera@comcast.net. The class also
operates a Face Book Page under
Vineland HS Class of 1967. The
committee plans to acknowledge
and honor classmates who have
passed away, so that information
would also be received at the email
or Face Book sites. The committee
would like to complete registration
by May 21.
The Vineland High School Class of
1977 will be hosting is 35th class
reunion on Saturday, July 28, at
