Impact Health and safety of workforce

Solid waste management Accidental fall over due to changes in the landscape/ cliff Loss of vegetation and other land cover

Mitigation measures Continued provision of safety measures and protective gear in addition to training of workforce. Maintenance of standby vehicle to rush the injured to nearby hospital. Proper maintenance of disposal facilities Reinforce planted trees with wire mesh fence and signage prohibiting trespassing Though the site has significant vegetation, it does not contain rare/endangered species. So these will be planted during the restoration period and continued planting of trees around the project is upheld. Restricting blasting and stone crushing activities to daytime only. Continued use of wet processing quarry plant to avoid dust pollution. Undertake regulated rock blasting and use of modern explosives Controlled blasting using modern explosives and technologies. Undertake electrical drilling. Provide protective wear to work force. Ensure all pulleys/belt conveyors have guards. Put in place signage on dangerous areas Ensure controlled blasting. Put in place warning signals (sirens, red flags) at entry points to the quarry. Ensure prompt and due compensation is undertaken whenever damage is caused to the locals. Cover trucks with tarpaulins Limit speed to 20km/hr when passing through trading centres whether loaded or not. Standard fire emergency plan should guide operations during fire outbreaks. Periodic servicing of fire equipment and placing them near high risk areas Training workforce how to respond to a fire outbreak and other emergencies

Noise and dust

Accidents from quarry machinery Damage from flying stones

Vehicular accidents Risk of fires

Effect of oil spills

Blasting should be done at a particular time well known to all the surrounding people so that they do not go near the unsafe zones until blasting is complete.

Sensitizing and periodic updating of the immediate communities about the quarry activities to ensure smooth co-existence. Constant consultations to ensure that new impacts that emerge in the course of the quarry process are addressed. Periodic draining of water from ditches at the quarry site to avoid stagnant water that acts as a breeding ground for disease vectors. Wet crushing should be conducted at all units to reduce on the amount of dust in the atmosphere by installing sprinklers instead of manually pouring water on the hard core stones being fed into the primary crusher.
