Vellore Institute of Technology Deemed University Vellore 632 014 School of Sciences and Humanities M.Phil/ Ph.D- Chemistry 06RCH502-Paper II Concepts in Chemistry Aims and Objectives : To build up a sound background in the field of recent aspects of Chemistry as required for post M.Sc. level researchers. To impart basic knowledge on the aspects of non-conventional methods of organic synthesis, specific mechanisms in Organic Chemistry, Solid State and Materials Chemistry, Modern Electrochemical Storage Systems.

Learning outcome: Research students will be able to understand and utilise the concepts of non-conventional methods of Organic Synthesis, specific mechanisms in Organic Chemistry, Solid State and Material Chemistry, Modern Electrochemical Storage systems, in their area of research. Unit- I Green Chemistry Principles, green solvents, solevent free reactions, green chemistry methods, case studies. Recent developments in micro wave accelerated solventless organic synthesis-N-Alkylation reaction, Dethioacetalization reaction, Dethiocarbonylation, Dethioacetalization reaction, oxidation of arenes with permanganate, synthesis of aziridines, Benzimidazole, Substituted thiazoles. Recent applications of ultrasound in organic and inorganic synthesis. Oxidation processes, N-C and C-C bond formation (encompassing the Wittig, Ullman and acyloin reactions), cycloaddition reactions (including Diels-Alder reaction), bond cleavage reactions and biological examples . Unit II Selected topics in Inorganic chemistry Coordination Chemistry - CF Theory, MO Theory; tetrahedral and octahedral complexesapplication to electronic spectra (solutions and solids)-Tanabe Sugano diagram Solid state and materials chemistry- Structure of simple ionic and covalent solids- AB, AB2 ABX3 types - Properties of solids- electrical and magentic properties-Introduction to Nanomaterials-inorganic oxides only Bioinorganic chemistry- role of Ca2+ , K+ , Zn2+, Co 2+, Fe transfer reactions- inner sphere and outer sphere reactions.

Unit III Selected topics in Organic chemistry Suzuki coupling- Hiyama coupling, Kumada coupling, Negishi coupling, Cascade reaction, Tandem Chemical reaction. PTC, (Atleast three examples each). Brief description of the following reagents with suitable examples and their application. BINAP, BINOL,ziegler Natta catalyst, TEMPO, TBHP, PCC, NMO, Gillman reagent, Simmons - Smith reagent, Olefin metathesis- ring closing metathesis followed by oxidation, elimination, RCM combined with tautomerization

Unit IV Selected topics in Physical chemistry Photochemistry : - Study of transient species in photochemical reactions - Lasers in Photochemistry Electrochemistry - Application of current-potential techniques in Inorganic, Organic and Pharmaceutical analysis - Modern electrochemical storage systems Lithium-ion, Nickel-metal hydride, Fuel cells with emphasis on solid oxide fuel cell, molten carbonate fuel cells, proton exchange membrane fuel cells Unit -V Basic concepts in microbiology Media Preparation, sterilization techniques-physical ad chemical methods- pour plate, spread plate and streak plate technique.Cultivation of bacteria- general principles - any one example from e-coli, S. aureus, S.pneumonia, Sal. Typhi Stains and staining technique-gram's stain-gram +ve, gram -ve - simple stains, differential stains, acid fast stain, Albert's stain Invitro activity - Kirby Bauer method, Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), agar well method. Aims and Objectives : To build up a sound background in the field of recent aspects of Chemistry as required for post M.Sc. level researchers. To impart basic knowledge and utility of various spectroscopic techniques, thermal, microscopic and diffraction techniques.

Learning outcome:

Research students will be able to understand and utilise the various spectroscopic, thermal, microscopic and diffraction techniques during their research activity.

Unit I: Spectroscopic Methods Concept of Fourier transform, Applications of near IR, far IR and Raman Spectroscopy, Dielectric Spectroscopy, Time-domain Reflectance spectroscopy to simple organic and inorganic systems. Instrumentation of Inductively Coupled Plasma Analysis (ICPA) and AFS. Unit II: Magnetic Techniques Principles of 13C-NMR and 19F-NMR, Solid state NMR such as Li, Si, and P. 2D-NMR: Basic principle and techniques such as H, H-COSY, C, H-COSY, NOESY, DEPT. Electron spin spectroscopy (ESR) - Principle and application Unit III: Magnetic properties and measurements Origin of para, dia, ferro magnetism, magnetization, susceptibility, magentic susceptibilty measuremnts- Faraday and Gouy balance, Ferromagnetism- Hysterisis loop, domain structure, anti-ferro magnetism Unit IV: Mass Spectroscopy and Hyphonated techniques Mass spectral techniques such as MALDI, FAB, ES (Electron Spray), EI (Electron Impact) and CI (Chemical Ionization), Time of Flight. Principle and applications of GC-MS, LC-MS, LCMS-NMR. Unit V: Diffraction and Microscopic Techniques X-Ray diffraction: Powder and single crystal techniques. Neutron and electron diffraction: basic principle and applications. Microscopic techniques: SEM, TEM, AFM, STM, EDAX
