Skyler Drerup Government I Honors Norris, Dan 21 February 2012 Federal Marriage Amendment The Government has constructed a non-passed amendment that states that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal (MLK). This amendment goes against every thread and lining of what Martin Luther King had once dreamed. The United States as a whole has come so far in our age of reason, so why would we regress? One not aware of the new centurys revolution could say it is the only way to make the majority of the people happy is to pass this amendment. One that has fully embraced what is happening around them as well as informed of the history of man-kind would say this: the only way to progress from where we stand is to vote no on this amendment, unless you would rather have riots, wars, and bloodshed. The fact of the matter is that the

world changes constantly, as well as the peoples frames of mind. Closed minds is like a locked door; when someone is knocking at your door to new opportunities and ideas that you havent experienced or thought of, you cannot until you unchain the door. How can ones life be affected by that of an opinion versus who actually has to abide by a rule affecting their way of living? How will gay marriage affect those who argue against it? Certainly the immediate impact, at least, is less direct, which presents fewer compelling stories to write. Opposition to gay marriage is worth examining (and has been regularly included in the news), but matching every feature on a significant event in someone's life with another feature on someone else's opinion of that event is not balance . If this country is to ever succeed in creating equal freedom and justice for everyone, than why are they even putting ones rights up for discussion. Not only is it contradicting the Constitution, it is corrupting the one of the reasons why Church and State had separated. In retrospect, gay marriage should not be an issue to people who are not affected by it. Anti-gay wedding planners, lawyers and judges should be the least to complain just for the fact that they would be gaining a lot more businesses from it. How does this affect the non-gay population? This should boost the economy in marital affairs, not tear apart anyones lives,

other than the ones being affected. The United States as a whole has come so far in our age of reason, so why would we regress?
