Design of Steel Structures using Alternative Steel Materials to BC1: 2012

Introduction
Building and Construction Authority (BCA) has recently revised BC1: 2012 Design Guide on the use of alternative steel to BS 5950 and Eurocode 3 to align with the latest design principles and changes in material technologies. BCA is planning to implement this revised guide from April 2012. The revised BC1: 2012 version has an expanded scope covering additional steel products such as tension rods and sheet piles. The quality assurance requirements for re-used steel materials used in the bracing of excavation works as well as design approaches using the Eurocode 3 has also been included in the revised guide. The seminar will also cover an actual implementation case study of the quality regime for re-usable steel struts used in the bracing of deep excavation support systems.

Seminar Content
1. Keynote addreSS: Steel a good frIend This presentation will highlight good practices that the construction industry could take note in improving quality and standards of steelworks. Lessons drawn from structural failures both overseas and locally will also be presented. An overview of the revisions to BC1-the design guide to alternative steel materials and moving forward, new initiatives to enhance the competency of the structural steel industry will also be briefly discussed. 2. ImplementatIon ISSueS and Current revISIonS In BC1: 2012 This presentation will first examine the progress achieved and issues associated with the use of the design guide BC1 to date. An overview of the latest 2012 version will be given and current revisions will be explained in details. The objective is keep the stakeholders informed of key changes affecting the steel construction industry, as well as to provide an opportunity for questions and feedbacks to be raised and collected. 3. materIal traCeaBIlIty and reuSaBIlIty In BC1: 2012 BC1 has been extended to cover reused steel materials, in particular steel strutting system and sheet piles found in earth retaining or stabilizing structures. Quality assurance is an issue, and this presentation will explain how it can be achieved through the establishment of material traceability framework and material reusability requirements to ensure sustainability and safety in the re-use of such steel materials. 4. ImplementatIon of qualIty regIme for re-uSaBle Steel StrutS Following a year-long pilot study with BCA, a rigorous quality assurance regime for re-usable steel struts was implemented on a large stock of Yongnam modular steel strutting system. Through frequent independent surveillance audits, valuable insights were gained in the management of re-use material and new material. This presentation will touch on the lessons learned and give indications of the way ahead for re-usable steel strut systems.
