NEVADASTATECOLLEGE TEACHERPREPARATIONPROGRAM LESSONPLANFORMAT

Description of Classroom:
Grade: 3 Approximately 30 students General education classroom

Background:
Students are familiar with the water cycle. This is a closer look at one element in the water cycle. This lesson will be part of a series. Three days will be spent on some observations in the lesson.

Content Objective(s):
Students will take a closer look at evaporation. They will learn how wind and exposed surfaces can change the rate of evaporation.

Language Objective(s):
Reading- reading written instructions, and questions Writing- writing answers and descriptions in complete sentences Listening- actively listening to review, instructions, and closing discussion Speaking- communicating with group members and participating in class discussion

Nevada Standards:
N.5.A.1- Students know scientific progress is made by conducting careful investigations, recording data, and communicating the results in an accurate method. N.8.A.3-Students know how to draw conclusions from scientific evidence. N.5.A.4-Students know graphic representations of recorded data can be used to make predictions. N.2.A.1-Students know how to make observations and give descriptions using words, numbers, and drawings. N.5.A.7-Students know observable patterns can be used to organize items and ideas. N.5.B.3-Students know the benefits of working with a team and sharing findings. E.5.A.2-Students know the processes of the water cycle, including the role of the sun.

Key Vocabulary:
m-meter ml-milliliter Evaporation: process where liquid water is absorbed into the atmosphere as a gas Condensation: the act or process of reducing a gas or vapor to a liquid or solid form Molecule: any very small particle Surface Area: the extent of a 2-dimensional surface enclosed within a boundary Phase Change: a change from one state (solid or liquid or gas) to another without a change in chemical composition

Teaching Strategies:
Cooperative learning -while working in small groups Hands-on, active participation - while doing experiment and while writing observations Journaling - students will record what they observe and learn from the experiment in their science notebooks

Warm Up Activity:
Review of the water cycle as a class

Lesson Sequence:
Students will be divided into groups of five, the groups will be decided by colored cards drawn from a hat. (10 min.) One student from each group will come to me to gather materials needed. (5 min.) The students will do the activity on the handout. (25 min.) The students will place their water containers in different areas around the room (eg. One groups in the sunlight, anothers in the shade ect) for further observations (next day). (10 min.). Over the next 2 days students will observe the evaporation of the water in their containers. (15 min. per observation). After the observations are finished we will discuss the findings as a class. (20 min).

Accommodations:
Depending on the students levels, I may need to go over the instructions individually with the students and check on their group more frequently to ensure the students understand the concept.

Supplementary Materials:
Sponges, chalkboard, water, heavy pieces of cardboard, drinking glass, bowl, fruit jar (with lid), and a pie plate

Review/Assessment:
Participation- graded on a 1-5 scale 1 being no participation and 5 being full participation Observations- descriptive observations with at least one picture will receive a 5, no observations will receive a 1 Questions- Answers written in complete sentences and thought behind answers is shown will receive a 5, no answers will receive a 1. Total of 15 possible points

Reflection:
As long as the students stay on task and not get in water fights, the lesson should go well. I might want Form: 005 to have all the materials handed out before the students arrive to save time during class.
