LESSON PLAN Name: Learning from Literature Date: Week 10 & 11 Grade Level/Subject: 6th grade/Language Arts Prerequisite

Knowledge: Ability to read and comprehend short novels Student Objectives/Student Outcomes: Students will create pamphlets about the thing they learned from their book, students will find lessons and overall messages from stories Content Standards: CCRL.6.6. Determine a theme or central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments. CCW.6.2. Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content. CCW.6.4. Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. CCW.6.5. With some guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach. Materials/Resources/Technology: Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper, Perfect by Natasha Friend, Loser by Jerry Spinelli, The Last Book in the Universe by Rodman Philbrick, Weedflower by Cynthia Kadohata, Microsoft Word, computer Implementation: 30 minutes Opening of Lesson (Objectives, hook, behavior expectations) Give synopsis of each book, have students choose which book they want to read (6 maximum), get into groups for each book, determine schedule for reading (have to be done within 2 weeks with project) Procedures: Students will choose a book and read it. During Mon, Wed, and Fri class time, groups will meet to discuss events of book and their thoughts. Last discussion will be Fri of week 11, pamphlet due Wed of week 12; student will discuss what they like about book, dont like, what they are learning about a culture/social issue Summary/Closing: Have class discussion about messages/lessons in each book Student Assessment: I will walk around and keep track of people participating. Project: Students will create a pamphlet about something they learned from the book form their group. Each student will create their own pamphlet. (Example attached from The Boy Who Dared)
