Effect of Spanking

Article 1
Ulman, A., & Straus, M. (2003). Violence by children against mothers in relation to violence between parents and corporal punishment by parent. Journal of Comparative Family Studies, 34, 41-60. Summary: This article talks about how corporal punishment on children can actually lead to the parent being abused by the child. Then this article goes on to state that one reason that this may be happening is because if the child is already predisposed to violence and has been a victim of it then they are more likely to hit their parents. The article also talks about how it is more likely for a younger child to hit their parent. Also more delquent children have a higher rate of hitting their parents also.

Article 2
Straus, M., Sugarman, D., PhD, & Sims, J., PhD. (1997). Spanking by parents and subsequent antisocial behavior of children. Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, 151, 761-767. Summary: This article is about how spanking a child can lead to antisocial behavior later in life. In the article they there was a study that was done on children to see if spanking could lead to the prevention of antisocial behavior. At the end of the study they concluded that spanking actually had reverse effects on the children causing them to be more antisocial. Another study that was done stated that corporal punishment is known to have worse effects on older children compared to younger children.

Article 3
Straus, M., & Yodanis, C. (1996). Corporal punishment in adolescence and physical assaults on spouses in later life: What accounts for the link. Journal of Marriage and Family, 58, 825-841. Summary: This article was stated how there was a link between Corporal punishment as a child could lead to spousal abuse later in life. It tried to prove this to be true by taking many different surveys. One of the surveys taken stated that teenagers that received corporal punishment were a lot more likely to abuse their spouse. I support this article because I think that if you have signs of abuse when you are longer than you are more likely to abuse your children when you get older.
