INTRODUCTION

In recent years, there has been an increasing amount of attention in the study of relationship of personality variables and psychological factors with athletic performance. Most of the work has been concerned with delineating personality traits of athletic, differentiating among individuals by sports and level of success etc. Studies of measurement of personality provide information needed by Sports Psychologists and Coaches, who are charged with the responsibility for selection, counseling and training of the athletes for competition. It is assumed that the physical abilities of an individual are related to his personality structure, because the environment in which physical abilities are displayed (i.e., in games and sports) constitutes an ideal setting for the development of desirable personality characteristics such as sociability, emotional stability, confidence, cooperativeness, personal adjustment and extraversion, which are very essential for increasing the athletic ability of the players.

Socio-Economic Status (SES)

Socio-Economic status (SES) is one of the key factors which has been studied extensively in behavioral sciences research . It has been observed that SES as an independent variable has a greater impact on dependent variable i.e., performance of an individual. Behavioural component have greater bearing on socio-economic conditions of the individual. It has been conclusively proved that SES is one of the main correlates of behavioural component Sports psychology is an area which attempts to apply psychological facts and principles to leaning performance and associated human behaviour in the whole field of sports. In sports, the player learns motor skills and in competitive sports he makes use of these skills to achieve success. Learning is a social attribute. It brings about modification in behaviour and Psychology helps the coach to understand the real

springs of behaviour of player and how desirable and modification can be brought in the behavioural patterns to the advantages of the individual and the society. A coach understands how to deal with a sportive child and elite sportsmen in different setting. If forewarns the coach that a child is not "miniature man" REVIEW OF LITERATURE Sports performance is a function of combination of several factors both psychological and social. It has been rather a difficult task to review all the studies related to relationship of psychological factors with sports performance. There is no doubt that sports excellence is geared-up by factors like personality, motivation self-confidence, anxiety, aggression and so on. It is true that there is a paucity of systematic research in this area. However, sincere attempts are made in this chapter to review certain earlier studies related to the variable selected using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), Booth

(1958) found that the non-athletes scored higher than the athletes on anxiety and depression and scored lower on other areas of MMPI. Malumphy (1968) used the Chattel's 16PF to compare the personality traits of 120 women : (77 athletes and 43 non- athletes) and found that athletes who played individual sports were more extroverted than those who played team sports. Niblock (1960) found female athletes to be more energetic enthusiastic efficient as possessing more leadership potential and were optimistic and more extroverts. Chadwick (1972) found that female athletes were significantly more tough minded, practical, group dependent, suffered and less intelligent than nonathletic female. On the other hand Ogilvie (1971) found male competitors to be basically emotionally healthy persons who tend towards

METHODOLOGY
1. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM : To study the effect of SES and personality dimensions on the performance of Athletes. 2. OBJECTIVES The following are the objectives of the present study : 1. To assess the effect of socio-economic status (SES) on the performance of athletes. 2. To study the impact of personality dimensions on the performance of athletes. 3. To examine sex differences in performance of different sample subgroups. 3. HYPOTHESES The following are the hypotheses of the study and attempt is made to prove them 1. There is a significant impact of socio-economic status (SES) on athletic performance 2. There is a significant influence of personality dimensions on athletic performance 3. There would significant be sex differences in athletic performance between sample sub groups. 4. THE SETTING The study was conducted on a sample of 360 athletes selected from the jurisdiction of gulbarga University Gulbarga. The selection was done based on level of participation. The sample was divided in to two SES levels-high and lowon whom the personality inventory was administered. Attempt was made to equalize the sample based on sex too. The selected sample was subjected to performance of 100 and 200 mtr. tests.

5. TOOLS 1. Socio-economic status scale (SESS) The SES scale was constructed by Bharadwaj (1989). This scale consists of 7 items related to like family, social, education, professional, property, monthly income and caste perspective. The reliability of the test has been calculated by test and re-test method (r=0.76) which is significant. The validity is found to be adequate. 2. Eysenck Personality Questionnaire This questionnaire is developed by Eysenck (1985) which consists of 90 items with two alternatives (Yes/No). The questions are distributed on dimensions, namely, Psychoticism, Neuroricism, Extraversion and Lie scale. The responses can be scored with the help of scoring key. Accordingly one who scores high on each of the dimensions of personality dimension. As author claims the reliability of the test is 0.92 which is significant. The validity of the test is also satisfactory. In the present study two dimensions viz., extroversion and neuroticism are considered. 3. Statistical Analysis To meet the objectives of the study and verify the formulated hypotheses the data were analyzed, using the statistical technique of t-test to compare the sample sub-groups.)
