Need of an Oil Purifier

It is widely believed that Industrial Oils have a
specified life of operation during which they
get contaminated and their properties like
viscosity, lubricity etc. deviate beyond
acceptable limits. It is a common practice in
almost all industries to scrap off the oil after
certain duration of their operation and replace
it with fresh oil. The frequency of oil
replacement varies according to the
equipment / machinery type and the work
conditions. This activity poses huge
expenditure on industry for oil purchase and
safe disposal of scrapped oil.

Moreover, with contamination increase in
circulating oils, the wear and tear of machine
parts increases, thereby increasing
breakdowns and machine component failures.
It has been an established fact, if oil is kept at
super clean levels, the machine breakdowns
can reduce by more than 80%. To understand
this phenomenon, an analogy may be drawn
from the human body, wherein blood contamination with bacteria and virus leads to sickness. Healthy diet
helps the blood to retain its cleanliness and fight against illness. Similarly, it is mandatory for all oil
containing equipments to have a Perfect Oil Purifier as an add-on attachment.



Why is Oil Purification required ?

In order to develop a perfect oil purifier, one needs to identify all reasons of oil deterioration and then
address them all 100%. Moreover, the operating principle should be easily implement-able and
implementation economics should be justified.

a. Role of Sub-micronic Solid Particles in Oil Deterioration

Any system which uses oil for lubrication, pressure transmission, cooling or flushing, during its operation
gets contaminated with infinite sub-micronic particles (silt). Here we are talking only of the particles
accumulated because of wear and tear of the various moving components of the system rubbing against
close tolerance surfaces. If the oil is not changed or cleaned, the said said system starts suffering
breakdowns. Typical failures include jamming and noise of pumps & valves, engine sieze etc.

b. Role of Moisture (In traces) in oil

Like solid particles, another enemy of oil is moisture or water. Moisture enters an oil tank through the air
breather (along with the humid air intake) or from punctured heat exchangers (alongwith coolant). Even
negligible traces of moisture of the order of 200 ppm (0.02% only) can oxidize the oil and generate acids.
Oil Acidification causes rubber seal failures and creates oil leakage points. Acids in oil also accelarate the
metal surface corrosion, thus damaging essentials system components.

Research by Timken Bearing Co, UK shows that moisture contamination in oil even in traces causes the
bearing life to fall down drastically. As seen from the graph, a 500 PPM moisture contamination can bring
down the bearing life to 40%.

Cummins and Caterpillar make on Diesel Locomotives. After Klarol Oil Purifier installation, the
Engine Oil Change period has been increased from 500 hours to 6000 hours in each engine. We
perform weekly laboratory tests for oil properties.

Apart from drastic reduction in Engine Oil requirement we have observed better fuel efficiency and
longer Engine life. During scheduled overhauls of engines, we have observed excellent condition of

Tata Motors 5000Tn Press Towards Zero Maintenance Breakdowns

The Automobile giant has
installed Klarol Oil Cleaning
System on a 5000Tn Hydraulic
Press with 20,000L oil capacity
in its Truck-1 facility. They have
been able to maintain Zero
Moisture level in oil and
Cleanliness Standard 4-5 times
better than new oil. The Klarol
installation has been able to
maintain the Viscosity, Lubricity
and other oil properties intact.
Due to reduction in wear and

sealings, less chocking of servo
valves and pumps the

The superfine filter (Klarol oil cleaning system), removes particles upto 0.25 micron continuously form
the main tank which drastically reduces the load form the main line filter, increasing its durability. An
added advantage is that the new line filtration system removes 100% moisture from the oil

After continuous running for 300 hrs. the laboratory results showed an improvement over the earlier NAS
value (level of contamination) - 9 and moisture > 1.5% to NAS value 6 and moisture 0%.
