Low participation of women in Economic and Governance processes has lead to imbalanced statistics in; - access to land, - employment and wealth, - education, - and HIV AIDS prevalence, - gender based violence.

Providing Livestock business trainings in broiler farming.

Using broiler production Demonstrations in rural areas.


The project takes the Household approach from the planning stage through to the marketing stage and expenditure of revenue realized.

WHAT IS THE TIME-FRAME FOR THE PROJECT?


This is a 10 years project split as follows; (2003 September to 2013 ) - 3 years was for problem identification, analysis and finding possible solutions. - 5 years - establishing businesses and legalising them (including Demos). - 2 years - passing on the gift.

WHO IS THE KEY TARGET? WHO IS INVOLVED? ARE WOMEN AND MEN EQUALLY INVOLVED?

The Rural Communities. The key target is the Household.


This way the men, women and the youth are involved. The investment is understood and the benefits enjoyed by all Household members.

Government funds were used for the transport and meetings. The human resource is from the Department of Livestock.

Establishment of the individual Business Enterprises was Households used funds from savings. The human resource is from the households.

Women are fully involved and economically empowered. The Standards of life for the 17 families have improved from earning average of $2 to $6 per day. The involved families are able to take their children to school especially the girl child as she has always been the one to drop out when money was not enough.

This is very sustainable as: - The families own the businesses. - The families did not get handout to start the businesses. - The project does not use special funding so trainings will continue for the community - The idea is being transferred to all DVLD staff in the District. - The farmers will be sharing experiences and taking the knowledge to others passing on the gift.

LESSONS LEARNED
The following lessons have been learnt; - A Demo is an efficient tool of Extension - HH approach is the best way to develop the communities. - Gender based violence can be reduced with increased communication. - HH members learn to appreciate each other more as they do things together
