Approach

As Castle Hill rises 50 to 60 meters (165 to 200 ft.) above the Danube, the inhabitants of Budapest rightly say that they go "up" to the Castle. If you are going by car, a winding road, which offers a wonderful view, starts at the Buda end of the Chain Bridge. This is also where bus 16 runs, starting in Erzsbet tr and passing through the whole Castle District. A special bus marked `V' also starts at the Buda end of the Chain Bridge and serves the National Gallery. The other chief road to the Castle District starts from Moszkva tr, the trade centre of Northern Buda, and reaches Castle Hill through the Vienna Gate (Bcsi kapu). However, the pleasantest way to get to the Castle District is on foot. You can start from any of the main streets running round the hill - F utca, Batthyny utca or Attila utca - and by taking the quiet little streets, steps or slopes cut in the castle walls, you reach the Castle District in very few minutes.
