Laura White Interview

Laura White is a singer from Atherton in Bolton and is best known for reaching the final twelve of the fifth series of the XFactor in 2008. Whites debut single, You should have known charted at number 32 on the UK Charts and in 2012 she was the special guest of the Peter Andre tour.

Q Q Q

What has been your best experience so far? Everything! The last three and a half years have been a whirlwind. Id say the highlight, was performing at the M.E.N Arena as it as always been my dream. Who is your inspiration? Ive got many inspirations, such as Stevie Wonder and my relative Michael because hes always positive. I love to read novels and books and Im inspired by people who are mainly driven to what they love to do. What happened to releasing Radio as your second single? It was going to be a smash hit according to the critics, but it had the ironic rapping and it was a hard decision for me to make, but I thought it didnt go with the style of my music and project. How was the transition from being on National Television to coming back to Bolton? My life changed the minute I entered for the show! After the show, Im in London quite a lot. I try coming home as much as I can and I try forgetting about music when Im with my family. I love the roots, the people and everything here really. How did it feel working with somebody as big as Cheryl Cole? At the time it was life changing as Cheryl had achieved so much and she understood how I felt with my music, she also understood how I didnt want to rush through releasing songs with no meaning to them. It was just wonderful to have that support from Cheryl. Tell us a bit about your debut album! The album is a mix of cool pop songs, with hooky melodies and its all based on my diary entries and completely on everything that Ive felt. Youve been writing songs for Rihanna, Eliza Doolittle, Cher Lloyd and Leona Lewis, do you ever prioritise who youre writing for? Ive been so passionate about my writing and my management team believed in me all the way but I have to maintain the balance of writing from my heart and writing for other artists. What is your most embarrassing moment? I always say this, I did a showcase when I was about 17 at the time and funnily enough, I was singing Falling by Alicia Keys, they didnt tell me that there was only a sheet at the back of the stage and because I was so involved in my singing that I shut my eyes and I ended up falling backwards

Laura White Interview

What is your most memorable moment? Ive been so lucky and my most memorable moment was getting to the moment where the public was going to hear about me. Who would you want to be stuck in a lift with? I would have to say Drake! Hes the love of my life, and I absolutely adore his work and lyrics. If I was stuck in a lift with Drake, maybe I could even blag doing a song with him! Moving onto what you think of young people, what do you think of the youth of today? I think that we have such a strong community spirit and I think the way forward is just to keep kids focused nowadays. I think that you just have to be really inspired and just believe in yourself. Do you think its changed much since when you were young? I think that if you have someone close to you like your family and you are loved then you will have a strong mind in life and you will believe in what you are doing. I think that connecting with your parents and developing it from there is the most important thing. Do you think enough is being done to promote the positives of young people? Well, all the kids that Ive met have been polite and the main thing is to just keep focused on your education and just keep inspiring kids to their best ability.

Music Reviews
Releases
We Are Young Fun Feat. Janelle Mone You may not have heard of Janelle Mone before or even the band Fun, they together, make the song We Are Young. Janelle is normally stuck to R&B so its not clear what compelled Janelle Mone to work with these New York-based Panic! At The Disco soundalikes. Theyre hardly natural bedfellows, and her input is limited to a brief vocal. Its a winning formula though this stirring ballad went to Number One in the US. Its already being played on the radio right here in the UK. The collaboration seems to be this years Owl City! Laser Lights Jessie J J-J-J-J-Jessie J is back with a brand new track! Its called Laserlight, the beat is by David Guetta. The song does sound a lot like Guettas previous track, Titanium. Feeling this larger-than-life, electro-pop ballad, it certainly gets you awaiting the forthcoming Platinum edition of Jessie Js 2011 debut set. The song has a really catchy beat and Jessie sings her name Derulo style!

Olympic Song
Spinnin For 2012, is the official Olympic Torch Relay song and it will create the soundtrack to the Olympic Flames, 8,000 mile journey across the UK. The song has a brilliant feel to it, its lyrics are inspirational to coincide with and bring alive the youthful focus of the Relay, and 8,000 inspirational torchbearers. The singers are Tinchy Stryder who is riding high in the charts! He is not only a chart-topping artist but also a fashion entrepreneur and music industry mogul. Dionne Bromfield is the icing to the cake though! Dionne debuted as a 13 year old and has become known for her unique music style! She has presented CBBCs youth programme, Friday Download.

Film Reviews

Ten years on, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones return as Agents J and K to bring Men In Black 3! The long anticipated film directed by Barry Sonnenfeld combines sci-fi and comedy to bring an epic film, which is sure to attract millions of people as it hits screens on May 25th. The film is sure to bring excitement as Agent J travels in time to save his friend, Agent K, from being assassinated by an alien. With many surprises in store, this film is sure to be a winner!

The much loved animated adventure comedy, Ice Age, returns this year as Manny, Diego and Sid are faced with a dilemma when their continent is set adrift. The dynamic team battle sea creatures and face pirates as they embark on a new journey, which will be screened on July 13th. This fourth instalment of the film promises to be really exciting and it has gripped many imaginations already!

Paranormal Activity 4 is set to release in October, as you would imagine. Every Halloween, a new Paranormal Activity film is released! Is the gist of the film too predictable? A family sets up cameras in a house, nothing happens for 45 minutes; all of a sudden something makes a noise, then nothing happens for another 45 minutes before finally something falls over. Surely we are tired of this now? If the next film follows the same storyline, the audience will surely only be there to see who falls over in the last ten minutes of the film before leaving!

Seasonal Trend
It was love at first sight when I saw these in Topshop the other day! The colours in these acid wash hot pants are amazing and they are fabulous quality. Theyll look great with and without tights, taking you from summer to autumn. Perfect for the summer festivals! Whats not to love!? I nipped into Manchester a few weeks ago, saw this dress and instantly fell in love. I love the shirt dress style and how this dress just epitomises summer with its blue daises and sun yellow fabric. The cuts at the side of the waist are gorgeous and are perfect for showing off your tan in summer (Not that we get any sun!). This is a piece I'd definitely invest in and probably end up wearing all year round with a comfy, thick knit in winter. You can pick this dress up from No Angel on floor 2 of Affleck's Palace for 25

Cyber bullying costs the United Kingdom 18 Million every year!

Over 350,000 children are victims of cyber bullying every year, costing the government an average of 18 million. The huge investment comes from a small section of the 67.8 billion education budget each year. But why should our government need to spend money on these dilemmas? Surely there are a variety of other options to stop cyber bullying without spending valuable tax payers money. Well in fact, the government, councils and communities have tried almost everything to bring this monstrosity to an end, but no hope has been shown. A huge factor in the prevention of cyber bullying is the awareness shown by people, especially parents and close friends. A large number of people in the United Kingdom are unaware that cyber bullying takes place on a daily basis and dont know the causes or effects of cyber bullying. Cyber bullying is described as persistent and intentional. How do the bully victims feel? A large percentage of children are not majorly affected by cyber bullies, but the individuals who are, are scared senseless. 20% of victims are reluctant to attend school because they are scared, 14% fear for their own safety, 5% self-harm and 3% of cyber bullying victims attempt suicide. Are you a cyber-bully? You might be a cyber-bully and not be aware of it. Ideas come across differently online than they would in person, if you persistently abuse someone as a joke on a social network, they could take it the wrong way and they could end up as one of the 3% of cyber bully victims who attempt suicide. Think before you act! Are you a victim? If you are a victim to this type of bullying or any other types of bullying, there is always help at hand. Dont suffer in silence, speak out and tell someone. You do not have to put up with it!

How does it feel to be branded in the same category as the youths who are out on the streets on a Friday night? I dont know, theyre the same age as me and its not as if I can change that. Its been going on for ages, people in their thirties where doing it when they were fifteen. as long as If I'm not drinking on the streets, then I cant really say much. Do you think enough is being done to promote the good work of the youth today? No not all, people should do more to help the environment and stop people trashing things. I think if there are more people doing well, more people will listen. Groups of people will like start acting and others will follow.

Healthy Active Lifestyle

What nutrients do I need for a healthy, balanced diet? Nutrients are divided into two groups; macro-nutrients and micro-nutrients. Macro-nutrients form the biggest part of what we eat, these include; Carbohydrates - these provide most of the energy we use Fats - these provide energy and insulation for our body Proteins - these are used for muscle growth and repair Micro-nutrients are needed in much smaller quantities, these include; Vitamins - these help our vision, skin, bones, teeth, amongst other things Minerals - these include calcium which helps keep bones dense and strong Water - water holds oxygen and keeps the body hydrated

How can I start living a healthy, active lifestyle? A series of tasks carefully combined can help you achieve a healthy, active lifestyle. A balanced diet, regular exercise, work and rest, all help you to feel good and maintain your well being. If you do not have the right amount of nutrients in your diet or if you over train when exercising, you could cause injury and it could lead to you damaging your muscles. It is essential that you get the correct amount of nutrients in your diet for muscle growth and repair. When exercising, the best option would be to create a personal exercise programme. This would help to support your individual needs and assist you in your health and fitness progression. How does regular exercise make you feel better? Moody, impulsive and troublesome, sound familiar? As teenagers we get burdened with stereotypes and descriptions that don't actually describe us at all. We get questioned on our actions and judged by many people!

Teenage Brain

For many years, people believed that a teenagers brain was at full capacity and worked like an adult brain but this is untrue. New research by scientists all over the world has shown that in fact, a teenagers brain undergoes a massive reorganisation between the ages of 12 and 25. Our brain gradually becomes more efficient, starting with the rear of the brain which controls basic functions like vision and movement and the front of the brain, which controls complicated things like thinking. Connections between our memory directory and our frontal areas also mean we get better at making goals and resolving problems. This is the transition from childhood to adulthood and makes us more decisive and mature. Because our brain is constantly changing, certain parts of our behaviour becomes more extreme than a child's or adults, for example, given a choice, teenager would take more of a risk than an adult or a child. This isn't because we don't understand the consequences or aren't in control, we are, we just value the reward more than an adult or a child would. This helps us to evolve to fit the needs of the world today and helps us to get the most out of life! The traits that many people characterise us on are in fact what define us. We aren't irrational or idiotic and we do understand consequences. We are in fact highly intelligent and use less of our brain to make decisions than adults do. So next time somebody calls you for your teenage troublesome traits, they only notice it because its only what annoys them or worries them. We aren't all bad!

Chelsea Spokes Interview

Chelsea Spokes is currently the presenter of Key103s breakfast show along with Mike Toolan and Matt Haslam. Chelsea also is the face of the Trafford Centre, presenting for the Big Screen each month and hosting their exclusive fashion shows on a regular basis.

When you were younger, what job did you want to have and why? I always wanted to be a journalist and I always had a pen in my hand, either writing poems or stories. Im not sure why, I just loved anything to do with creative writing and English. It also helped that I had a really inspirational English teacher who encouraged me. How did you get into the radio industry? I did a degree in BA Hons Journalism at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston. At the time there were not many Universities offering this course and they were known to be the best. After 3 years and some work experience I got a job presenting weekend breakfast on Century FM and after that, I was offered the job of presenting the Breakfast show with Mike Toolan on Key103 and that was 6 years ago. Why did radio appeal to you? The immediacy of radio is really exciting. For example, if you have some breaking news it can take ages to get it into print in a newspaper and for TV on radio you pull a fader up and its on, thats whats great. Also painting pictures with words, its a tough thing to do but worth it. What is your advice to budding broadcasters? Its so hard give advice on this and its something Im asked all the time. The industry has changed so much in the years since I started. In recent years its shrinking. Galaxy, for example, have become Capital with nearly all of their line up networked from London. This means instead of a presenter in every station the company owns, there is 1 sat in London going out across to all the stations they own, saving the company money and losing locality. Theres no hard or fast way to get into radio. In this world of super injunctions, I dont think it hurts to have a bit of legal training. Degrees provide this and they give you something to fall back on, an actual qualification, so Im in support of them. However, I think its important to learn things from you wont learn in a classroom or text book. Work experience will do this and youve got to do everything you can to get in there, learn skills and meet people who might be able to help you in the future. Its half what you know and half who you know.

Q
20

How does it feel to be a part of Manchester's Number 1 Hit Music Station? Its fantastic and we feel lucky every day. Key103 is a historic station with so much heritage in Manchester. Its a privilege to follow in the footsteps of many famous names and to hopefully inspire up and coming young radio presenters to follow in ours.

You work for Key 103 but what do you listen to on the wireless in your car? I do listen to Key103 even though I work for them. My husband is also a presenter on air so if I dont listen to his show, he sulks!! I also listen to a bit of everyone, to see what songs theyre playing and also 5 Live, for the chat. Who is your inspiration/idol? Again another difficult one. I dont really have anyone in particular. Just someone who is strong and reliable, very driven and successful, but knows how to balance work and personal happiness.
