Molding Knowledge Thats More Than Skin Deep

When you partner with OMNOVA Solutions, you are working with fellow molders. Before OMNOVA was created as a spin-off, it was part of GenCorp, which operated three reinforced plastics molding operations. We formulated our own sheet molding compound (SMC) as well as molded our own products...just like you. Although we no longer operate molding plants, our experience makes us your best source for In-Mold Coating Technology, a process we pioneered for our own use. Because we are molders by heritage, we see the process through your eyes and are able to anticipate problems and opportunities in a manner you cannot find elsewhere.
Our heritage is molding. As part of GenCorp, we ran our own compression molding plants. Today, we have commercialized our IMC technology, making it available across the reinforced plastics industry.

Our Partnering Philosophy: Not Just Talk

It seems like every supplier these days wants to be your partner. At OMNOVA we really mean it. We provide our customers: Extensive pre-engineering support, employing a comprehensive view of your entire process (Including flow modeling and tool design) Ongoing on-site technical support at your plant to optimize your process Guidance in meeting quality issues, including painting Advocacy for the molding industry. It is in both of our interests to help molders prosper with a viable, environmentally responsible industry For maximum benefit, get us involved early in your project. Well work with the molder, mold maker and OEM to provide the very best results.
Exploit the knowledge of our World Class technology experts to help your project. Come to us early, and we will help design your tooling and provide product suggestions to help make your project a success. OMNOVAs patent pending flow modeling technology (shown above), can predict the performance of an in-mold coating on your specific substrate and process before any tool steel is cut.

Our lab has full sized production presses to test coatings and molds.

In-Mold Coatings from OMNOVA: The VOC-Free Primers for Compression Molding
Surface appearance is often an important requirement in compression molded sheet molding compound (SMC) panels. To achieve this objective the standard practice is to in-mold coat (IMC) the parts. In-mold coatings are liquid materials that are integrated into the compression molding manufacturing process of SMC components for automotive, transportation and marine applications. These coatings are designed to improve the
Our in-mold coatings are formulated to improve and enhance the surface quality of SMC moldings. Shown is a standard automotive test designed to demonstrate in-mold coating adhesion performance on SMC.

surface quality of SMC moldings in functional and cosmetic parts and enhance the surface of the part when used as a primer. Our coatings function as substrate porosity fillers and surface sealers, providing a uniform surface that: reduces or eliminates fiber read through levels low and high spots enhances DOI eliminates orange peel provides a solvent/moisture barrier

The absence of solvents makes it an environmentally preferred green process. Since the coatings are incorporated during the compression molding process instead of being applied separately and do not contain solvents (100% solids), they reduce the number of surface finishing steps and cost in manufacturing while being environmentally friendly.

And, the Future is Now for Certain No Primer/No Top Coat Applications
Building on our competency, OMNOVA is actively engaged in IMC technology for appearance coating of certain food service, transportation, marine and building products. If you are looking to add protection, brilliant color and gloss while eliminating painting and its related costs and hazards, now is the time to contact us.
Our technology has allowed us to replace paint or primer with the added functionality of conductive and colormatched coatings.

IMC Key Performance Features

One component design with catalysis by the addition of initiator away from the press Excellent rate of property development at typical molding temperatures High conductivity in primer IMC at coating thicknesses as low as 0.5 mil (12.7 microns) Excellent strength, abrasion and scuff resistance for ease of handling and sanding in subsequent processing Appearance UV resistant clear/pigmented coating available Excellent SMC adhesion 100% Solids

New Applications for In-Mold Coatings

Where can your imagination and our technical expertise take your product? Here are a few of our more recent successes.

These residential doors provide woodgrain appearance and will never need painting! Hard-working skins made with our IMC materials have opened a new market for our customer.

Working with our customer, we helped develop a no-slide molded surface for food service trays, providing a unique competitive feature.
