Seasonal Wildlife Biologist Aides, Interns & Technicians

This is wildlife management work (inclusive of all species; rare, game, common, pest, terrestrial, aquatic, vertebrate, invertebrate, or photosynthetic) involving the scientific study, research, and active management of wildlife habitat, populations, life histories, habitat utilization, and environmental conditions on a military installation. The DMVA Wildlife Section is comprised of 5 full-time biologists, 2 full-time technicians, and 4-6 seasonal technicians/aides in partnership with Pennsylvania State University. FIG is a critical location for a butterfly species of concern, regal fritillary, and home to 18 state-listed plant communities of concern and over 50 PA species of concern. Wildlife surveys have documented 40 mammal, 119 bird, 38 reptile and amphibian, 34 fish, and 858 plant species occurring on the 17,100 acre installation. Fort Indiantown Gap is also the largest occurrence of native grassland in the Commonwealth. Inexpensive dormitory-style housing may be available. KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS REQUIRED: - Natural history: botany, zoology, ecology, wildlife/fisheries, forestry, and natural resources - PA flora and fauna identification skills and field survey techniques - Ecosystem, community, and terrestrial and aquatic habitat identification/classification. PROJECTED WORK ASSIGNMENTS: - Conducting field research, flora, fauna, and stream habitat surveys (herp surveys, breeding bird surveys, aquatic macroinvertebrate surveys, and invasive species surveys), data entry, and report writing - Rare species monitoring (e.g. Regal fritillary, Allegheny woodrat, timber rattlesnake, spotted turtle, Allegheny cave amphipod, striped gentian, nodding trillium, and yellow-fringed orchid) - Assisting in on-the-ground conservation projects (food plots, prescribed fire, and grassland restoration) - Implementing habitat improvement and utilizing land management techniques (grassland restoration, invasive plant species control, erosion control, vegetation management, habitat improvement, GPS/GIS, prescribed fire, and basic forestry practices) - Independent research projects are possible and encouraged. QUALIFICATIONS: Positions require a high level of personal initiative and ability to work independently within general guidelines. Applicants must be in good physical condition (requires hiking in steep, hazardous terrain), able to work in inclement weather, and willing to travel and to work some night and weekend hours. A valid driver's license is required. Aide positions require a minimum of an Associate's Degree or equivalent coursework (2 years of college) in wildlife, botany, natural resources, or a closely related field. Technician and Biologist positions require coursework leading to a B.S. or M.S. degree and appropriate experience.
