1. Evidence that students have achieved objective # 1 Students will work in groups to answer questions about the play and provide evidence to back up their answers from the play. The students will write their answers in their journals, so the teacher can read the answers when the students turn in their journals at the end of the class period.

The student will be assigned this desk for the remainder of the class today. The teacher will begin class by introducing the video: We have been talking about the theme of dreams in Lorraine Hansberrys play, A Raisin in the Sun. We said that each characters dream has been deferred or put on hold. Today we are going to watch a video that describes segregation and talk about how segregation plays a part in deferring the dreams of the Younger family. The video is about a group of students, named the Little Rock Nine, and theyre experience with integration in 1957. The Little Rock Nine were 9 AfricanAmerican students who were chosen to attend a previously whites only public school. While you are watching the video there are three things I want you to think about, and they are on the hand out that you have in front of you. 1) Define segregation, 2) Who are the Little Rock Nine, and 3) How might segregation play a part in the deferment of any characters dream in A Raisin in the Sun? Before the teacher plays the video, she will ask the class what three things she is looking for while the students are watching the video. The teacher will play the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_iH4Zx96xbY&feature=related After the video has played, the teacher will give the students 5 minutes to write down the answers to the questions on the work sheet. The teacher will set the timer and say go. The teacher will then ask the students to turn to the person next to them and ask them the three questions on the sheet. The teacher will give the students 5 minutes on the timer, set the timer, and say go. The teacher will spend 5 minutes calling on each group and asking them the answers to the questions on the work sheet. The teacher will talk about what theme means and ask the students for a working definition. The teacher will hand out the exit slips. The teacher will give the students 5 minutes to answer the questions on the exit slip. The teacher will ask the students to hand the teacher the exit slip as they exit the room for next period.
