Commanders Watch
As Chennault Squadron begins a New Year, we can all look back with pride at the accomplishments of the past year and at the same time look forward to the challenges of the future. During the past year, I have begun to get a glimpse of the potential that this Unit can accomplish in the coming years. For example, when I look back at the yearly attendance records, I begin to realize that each of us is starting to enjoy and look forward to our meetings. I think this is largely due to the fact that we have grown to enjoy each other, and we have a sense of pride in what we are doing. The pride we feel is due to contributions that each member has made to the group. A few of the more obvious ones begin with John Benton who has made us get serious about professional development and our duty to the purposes of Civil Air Patrol. Our Mission Pilots, now five in number (Ralph Abraham, Dan Chase, Glen Deas, Jon Haddad, and Joe Jacobs), soon to be six with Earl Welch; give our Unit a feeling of both security and pride, in that they have applied themselves to achieving one of the most difficult and essential CAP functions in coping with emergencies and disasters. We take pride in James Breaux as our Safety Officer. We know that our records are in order because Marvin Ward insists we follow the Regs and get them right. Bill Bobo responds to all that is requested, including keeping Welch going in the right direction. His quiet demeanor compliments him as a source of wisdom and advice. When you want to get something going, you look for Jim Graham with his big smile and go get-em attitude. Is my uniform on right? Ask Shaun Kelly. If it were not for Billy Powell, Chennault would not be able to take pride in its own web-site. Thank goodness we dont have many legal problems, but Fred King would be there if we did. Tom Dansby is back. Mike Tryon not only is a qualified air crewman and keeps our property safe, but he is always ready to help with any task, including making sure that no door prize goes unclaimed. Sidney Hill is still trying to teach Ralph Abraham how to use a hammer and make repairs to their hanger. We dont have a lot of money, but Richard Jilot keeps close guard on what I spend. Where would our Unit be without communications? The answer is nowhere. They challenge us all to live up to their expectations. Finally, we are starting the New Year off with a big challenge, the Group 1 Sarex in February, with our Group 1 Commander Charles Smith, serving as Incident Commander. When we asked if we wanted to take on this challenge as Host Squadron, there was not a single negative vote. Each of you make me proud to be called Chennault Squadron Commander. Elvis C. Stout, Capt. CAP
