Chennault Senior Squadron

3rd Quarter 2011 NEWS Resource of Choice
Commanders Watch
By Capt Elvis C. Stout, CAP Squadron Commander One of the rewards of the Commanders job is the opportunity to report, and even brag a bit, about a few of the incredible experiences Chennault Squadron has accomplished during the past couple of months. First, in sweltering heat amid some huffing and puffing, everyone participated in our Saturday work-day move from the JPS classroom area to Hanger 10 on the South Ramp. We even had Aubrey Lytle, Charles Smiths brother-in-law visiting from Canada, lending a great hand. With the help of a fork-lift, some pickup trucks, trailers, and elbow grease, we packed up, sacked up, and boxed up everything we own and moved. This new location at 5106 Operations Road promises to be outstanding. It offers ground level space for all our Staff and general meeting activities, parking convenience, as well as more than adequate facilities for hosting SAREXs and other training activities. Also, our assigned aircraft will be under the same roof. A most important accomplishment in September was the generous donation by Bayou Internet of full-time internet service throughout the entire building. Squadron members such as Dan Chase, Billy Powell, Jon Haddad, Glen Deas, Earl Welsh and others worked hard to wire the building and roof antennas to get both the internet and our radio communication system active and working. Immediately following the installment of internet, our Squadron hosted a highly successful training Group One SAREX in which our own Lt Col Charles Smith served as the Incident Commander. Operating over a three day period, the SAREX recorded outstanding numbers26 sorties and 36 flying hours. Recently Ralph Abraham, Sidney Lt Col Charles Smith & Capt Hill, Dan Chase, and Earl Welch Stout review sortie missions attended a Water Survival Training during the Group 1 SAREX. Course in Florida. We are told that all passed with flying colors, and we are especially proud of Earl Welsh who, as the result of a real life-saving incident during the training, has been nominated for a CAP Life Saving Award. Earl has also recently th distinguished himself by qualifying as our 7 Mission Pilot. Maj Dan Chase is registered to attend the Regional Staff College at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey to be held in October of this year. Maj Ralph Abraham has again visited and returned from Haiti. He manages to do all this while maintaining his busy medical practice, working as a Mission Pilot for us as well as for the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Rumor has it that Glen Deas is making plans to travel to Alabama to obtain certification as a parachute instructor. Jumping Deashosafats!! Paula Webb is doing a great job organizing Chennault Squadrons sponsorship of Wreaths Across America, and Shaun Kelly and Paula Webb are making advances in our mission area of Aero Space Education. Shaun just received the Chuck Yeager Award. It has been my pleasure recently to recognize and approve promotion for several members. 1st Lt James Breaux, 1st Lt Joe Jacobs, 1st Lt Shaun Kelly, 2d Lt Paula Webb. All named admit that John Benton, our Professional Development Officer, had a lot to do with their advancement. Finally, while weve had a lot of good things happen recently, our Squadron has some challenges yet to experience. One of the pressing ones is budget. With our new facilities, we are also experiencing new expenseslike utilities, higher fuel costs, and additional hanger costs. But with every challenge comes opportunity. Joe Jacobs, our Public Relations Officer, and Shaun Kelly have put together an outstanding packet of information about Civil Air Patrol and its history of accomplishments in National and Community service. Our plan is to take Joes packet to the Community with an urgent request for help. We will let them know the individual efforts and sacrifices our volunteer members are making in the name of CAPs three mission areas of Aerospace Education, Cadet Programs, and Emergency Services. I have no doubt that Chennault Squadron will meet its challenges headon, and I have no doubt we will succeed. While it may sound corny, it is nevertheless true, that for the current and foreseeable future, our motto will be When the going gets tough, the tough get going!
