Step1Removethepositivebatterycable
Removethepositivebatteryconnectiontoeliminatetheriskofshortingsomethingout. 1. Openyourtrunkandlocatethebatterypanelonthepassengersideofthecarandremovethepanel. 2. Usingthewrenchremovethenutforthepositivebatteryconnectionandmovethewiresafelyawayfrom thebattery. IMPORTANT:Donotcloseyourtrunkwiththebatterydisconnected,asfarasIknowtheopenerisoperated electronicallyandwillnotopenwithoutpower.IfyouhavethefoldingrearseatsIwouldrecommendfoldingthe seatbacksdownsoifyoudogetlockedoutyoucanusetheemergencyrelease.

Step2Tiltingtheseats
Sincethesubwoofersarelocatedunderthefrontseatsitisrequiredtoremovetheboltsholdingthefrontseatsin placeandtilttheseatsbacktogainaccesstothearea. 1. SlidetheseatsasfarbackastheywillgoandlocatetheTorx50boltsoneachseatrailthatareholdingthe seattotheframeandremovebothbolts. 2. Slidetheseatallthewayforwardandremovethe2rearTorxbolts. 3. Gentlytiptheseatsback. IMPORTANT:Therewillbeawireconnectingtheseattothecar,donotdisconnectoralterthiswireinanyway.This wiredealswiththepowertotheseatsaswellastheairbagsystem,disconnectingthiswirewillcausetheairbag systemtomalfunctionandwillcauseyoutopayavisittoyourdealership.

Step3Removingthesubenclosures
WiththesubwoofersexposedyoucannowremovetheenclosurestobeginmountingtheSWS8s. 1. UsingthePhillipsheadscrewdriverremovethe6screwsholdingthecoverinplaceandremovethecover, thesubwooferandenclosureshouldnowbevisible.

2. Fromthispoint,youwillneedtoremovethesubenclosurefromthecar,thereare2nutsholdingthe enclosuretotheframe,removeboth10mmnuts(circledbelow).

3. Gentlytiptheenclosureupfromthesideyoujustremovedtheboltsfromandslightlypullitoutofthehole. Therewillbeaconnectorforthespeaker(circled)attachedtotheenclosure.Squeezetheconnectorto releasethelockandpulltheconnectoroutoftheenclosure.

4. Theenclosureisnowcompletelyfreeandcanberemovedfromthecar.

Step4MountingtheSWSs
TheSWS8sareslightlydeeperthanthestocksubswhichrequiresomeslightmodificationstothestockenclosures toaccommodatetheextradepth.Workslowlyandcarefullytomakesurenothingisdamagedduringthe modificationprocess.Itisalsoveryimportanttowearpropereyeandsafetyprotectionwhenworkingwithpower tools,especiallywhenusingtheDremelwhichwillbeusedinthisstep. 1. Removethestocksubfromtheenclosure;thiscanbedonebyunscrewingthe4Torx20screwsaroundthe subandliftingitstraightup. 2. Ifyoulookinsidetheenclosureyouwillnoticeseveralridgesonthebottomoftheenclosure,youwillneed tocarefullyDremelthehighlightedridgesawayandleveloutthebottomoftheenclosureasshown.

IfyouhavelookedattheSWSsubversusthestocksubyouwillnoticethatthereisanotchthatthe connectorpluggoesintothatispresentonthestocksubbutnotontheSWS.Thisnotchneedstobesealed inordertoproperlysealtheSWSintheenclosure. 4. Thenextstepistowirethesub.Cutalengthofspeakerwireabout18incheslongandstriponeend.Pullthe wiresapartsotheyarelongenoughtoreachbothterminalsonthesub.Slidesomeheatshrinktubingup bothoftheseparatedwiresfarawayfromtheendsandtwisttheendsontotheterminalsofthesub. 8. Takeoutthesolderingironandsoldertheconnections,makesuretotakenoteofwhichwireispositiveand whichisnegative. 9. Waitforeverythingtocooldownandslidetheheatshrinktubingontothefreshlysolderedterminalsand shrinkitinplacewiththesolderingiron. 10. Thenextstepistomountthesubsintheenclosure,thisstepiskindoftrickybecauseyouneedtomakesure thatyouhaveenoughslackinthewiretobothmountthesubandconnectthewirestoconnectionsinthe carbeforethehotgluedries.Afterapplyingthehotglueyouwillneedtoworkquicklytomakesureyou achievethedesiredadhesionandsealqualityfromthehotglue.Alsobecarefulbecausethehotgluecould severelyburnyouifitcomesincontactwithyourskin. a. Heatupyourhotgluegunforabout10minutestomakesurethatitisatitsmaximumtemperature. b. RemovetheprotectivefilmfromtheLexaninsertsyoumadepreviously. c. SqueezeabeadofhotglueontotheenclosurearoundtheopeningwheretheLexanwillgo. d. PassthewirethroughthenotchintheLexanthatyoumade. e. PushtheLexanwiththewirethroughitintotheopeningontheenclosureandpushdownwitha decentamountofpressureuntilthegluehascooleddownandisdry. f. Squirtsomehotgluearoundthewirenotchtosealitandholdthewireasstillaspossibleuntilthe gluedries. g. Putthesubintheenclosure,replacetheoriginalscrewsandtighten.Donottightenthescrewstoo much,theyareselftapingscrewsthataregoingintoplasticanditwouldbeveryeasytostripthe plastic. h. 11. Nowthatyouhavethesubmountedintheenclosureitstimetoputitbackinthecar.Toputthembackinjust followtheremovalstepsbackwards. 12. Oncetheenclosuresarebackinthecarandsecurelymounteditstimetoconnectthewirestothecar.Instead ofsplicingtheexistingwiresIchoosetocuttheconnectorsoffandkeepthemintheeventIhavetoreturnthe cartostock.Cutthestockwiresabout2inchesawayfromtheplugandstripthewirestopreparethemto solder. 13. Connectthewiresfromthesubstothewiresfromthecarmatchingupthepositiveandnegativeforbothsides ofthecar,seethetablebelowforthecorrectpolarity.Oncetheproperpolarityisdeterminedsolderandheat shrinktheconnections. Step5CreatingLexanSpeakerTrim
Asyouknow,thestocksubwoofershadablackperforatedspeakergrateoverthemthatmadethemseamlessly blendintothecarpet.Thiswasallwellandgoodwhenwehadtheboringstocksubsinbutnowthatwehavesome powerinthereandwanttoshowthemoffthiswontdo.Onamoreseriousnote,ifthestockcoverisusedtheSWS 8willhititwhenthesubhitshardbecausethetravelofthevoicecoilismuchgreaterthanthestocksub.Thiswill leadtobadsoundingmusicandpossibledamagetothevoicecoilwhichwilldestroyyoursub.However,withouta coverthecarpetwillnotbesecuredaroundthesubanditwillsloppilyfrayupward.ToremedythissituationIhave createdaspeakertrimoutoftheleftoverLexan,readontofindouthow 1. SteponeistotaketheexistingspeakergrillsandtracetheiroutlinesonapieceofLexan.Again,makesure tomake2patterns,oneforeachsub. 2. Onceyouhavetheinitialoutlinetakearulerandcreateanotherlinethatisoffsetaninchinsideofthe outline.Essentiallywhatyouaredoingiscreatinganinchwidetrimpiecethatwillgoaroundtheoutlineof thesubopening.Whenmakingtheoffsetlinedonotoffsetthelongestside,thiswillnotbeused. 3. Cutitout;goslowlyandcarefully,thisisapiecethatpeoplewillseesoyouwillwanttomakethe workmanshipfairlyhighquality.Afteryouhavecutoutthepiecesyoushouldhavewhatlookslikeavery wideU.

4. Thenextstepistoplacethestockgrilloveryournewlyfabricatedtrimpiece,trytoalignthe2ascloselyas possibleanduseamarkerorpenciltomarkwhereeachofthescrewholesare.Trytobeasaccurateas possibleoryouwillhaveproblemswithmountingthemlater. 5. Aftermarkingtheholesitstimetodrillthemout,useadrillbitthatsslightlysmallerthantheheadofthe screwbutnottoosmallfortheshafttofitthrough.Again,goslowlyandbecarefulwhendrillingtheholes.I alsochoosetocountersinktheholesforamorefinishedlookbutyoudontreallyhavetoifyoudonthavea countersinkingbit. 6. Screwyourcompletedtrimpieceintotheexistingholesinthecarwiththestockscrewsandthatsit, youredone. Atthispointyouaredonewiththesubwooferinstall.Ifyouarenotgoingtoinstallanamplifieryoucanboltthe seatsbackdown,reconnectthebattery,andenjoyyournewSWS8s.Thesubswillrunnicelywiththestockamp, andyouwillnoticeabigdifferencebetweenthestocksubsandtheSWS8s.However,ifyoulikemeandwantmore power,keeptheseatsunboltedandreadon. Onasidenote,thelongsideofthetrimpiecewasexcludedfromthefinalproductbecausewiththatsideinplaceit wouldinterferewiththeexcursionofthesubwoofer.Additionally,thatsideisnotreallyrequiredastheseat mountingraildoesanicejobofholdingthecarpetinplace. Step1RemoteWire
Aremotewireisawirethatisconnectedtoaswitched12voltpositivelinethatgoesonandoffwiththeignition (i.e.cigarettelighter)somewhereinthecarandiswiredtotheamp.Thepurposeoftheremotewireistotellthe ampwhenthecarpowersonandthereforewhentheampshouldpoweron.Ichoosetotapoffofthecigarette lightersocketinthearmrestconsole.ThelocationfortheremotewirethatIchosewasbasedonthefactthatIalso hardwiredmyradardetectortothesameline.Theremightbebetterplacestopullfrom,butthisistheonethatI choose. 1. Thefirststepistoremovetherearpaneloffoftheconsoletogainaccesstothepowerconnector.Todo this,pullthepaneltowardstherearofthecaratthepointshighlightedinthepicture.Thereare4clips holdingthepanelinplacethatarebehindthehighlightedregions,makesurenottobreakthemorthepanel wontreattachproperly.Iused2plasticputtyknivestowedgeintheretoreleasetheclips.Additionally, thereisawireconnectingtheconsolewiththecar,becarefulnottobreakthiswirewhenremovingthe console.

2. Onceyouhaveremovedthepanelyouwillseeafewwires,youwillwanttofocusonthebrownandred wiresontheleftsideoftheopening.Usingasmallscrewdriverreleasetheclipanddisconnecttheplugto getsomemoreroomtowork. 3. Atthispointitstimetosplice(seethelastpageforafulldescriptiononhowtospliceawire)thered positivewireleadingtothecigarettepowerplug,onceyouhavesplicedthewiretwisttheremotewireto thenewlysplicedpositivelineandsolderthemtogether.Onasidenote,ifyouwishtohardwirearadar detectororother12voltaccessoryyoucanwireittothesameplace,youwilljusthavetospliceandsolder thenegativecableaswell. 4. Afteryouhavesplicedandsolderedthewires,securelytapetheconnectionwithelectricaltapeandplugthe powercablebackin.(Inthepicturebelow,thebluecableistheremotewire,andtheblackphonecordis goingtomyPassport8500radardetector)

5. Nowthatyouhavetheremotewiresetupitstimetorunthecablestothetrunk.Tuckthewiresunderthe bottomoftheplastictrimpiecetowardsthepassengersideofthecarallthewaytotheseamofthecarpet. Whenyoureachtheseam,followthatacrossthepassengersidefloortothetrimpiecenearthedoorand begintotuckthewireunderthatpiecetowardstherearofthecar.(seethepicturebelowfortherouteof thewire)

6. Followthetrimallthewayalongtothebackseatwhenyoureachtheseatyouwillneedtopopthesideof theseatuptoallowthewiretopassunderneaththeseatandoutoftheway.Todothisgrasptheseatnear thecornerandpullstraightupwithasignificantamountofforce.Youwillfeelandheartheclippopupand theseatinthatcornerwillbefree.Oncetheseatisfree,passthewireundertheseatandtowardsthe seatbeltfollowingthecreasetowardstherearofthecar.Whenyoureachtheseatbackfoldtheseatsdown andpassthewiretotheleftofthehingeinthecrease.(Ifyoudonthavefoldingseatsyouwillhavetofind anotherwaytogetthewireintothetrunk..sorrybutIdonthaveanymoreinformationabouthowthe seatsareattachedtothecarifyoudonthavethefoldingones.)

7. Oncethewireispastthehingeandintothetrunkyoucanshuttheseatbackandcliptheseatbackdown, theeasiestwaytodothisistojustsitdown,youwillfeelitclipbackintoplace. 8. Atthispointyouwillneedtoremovethefloorofthetrunk.Todothisopenthestoragecompartmentand liftupattheverybackofthelid,thereisnothingholdingthispiecedown,itshouldjustliftrightout. 9. Runthewirealongthebackofthetrunkareaaroundallthecomponentsandthestoragecompartmentto theampcompartmentatthereardriversideofthecar.

Step2Removingthetrunkpanels
Youwillneedtoremovethetrunkpanelontheleftsidetobetteraccessthewiringharnessthatyouwillbe tappinginto.Youtechnicallydonthavetoremovethepanel,butdoingsowillmaketheinstallmucheasier. 1. RemovetheCDtraybyslidingyourfingersunderitandpullingup.

2. Getaflatheadscrewdriverandprytheclipsholdingthepaneloff.Whenyoulookattheclipstherewill be2pieces,youwillwanttoprytheseapart.Donottrytoprythewholethingoffthepanelatonce,you willbreakit.Onceyouhaveseparatedandremovedthefirstpiecethenprythesecondpieceoff,again, donotattempttodothisinonestep.(seethehighlightedareasbelowforthelocationsoftheclips)

Step3Wiringtheinputsandoutputsfortheamp
Thispartoftheinstallationisthemostcrucial;youwillbecuttingintoawiringharnessthatisessentiallythe mainwiringforthesoundsystemfortheentirecar.Youwillneedtowiretheoutputstothesubs,aswellas inputsfromtherearspeakerchannels. IMPORTANT:Thisprocedureisextremelyriskyandifyoumessanythingupyouwillhaveseriousproblemon yourhands.Followthestepsslowlyandcarefullyandmakesuretoinsulateandtapeeverythingproperlyto preventsomethingfromshortingout. 1. Disconnectthewirefromthestockamp.Thereisalittlebuttonyouneedtopushinontheclipandthen slidethelatchfromtherightsidetotheleftsideandtheclipwillrelease. 2. Unclipthewiringharnessfromthewalluptothelargerubbercaponthesideofthecaranduntapethe wiressoyouhavemoreroomtowork.Ifyoulookattheharnessyouwillseethatthewiresaretwisted intopairs,thesepairsrepresenttheplusandminuslinesforeachchannelofthespeakersystem. 3. Firstwewillgetthelinesreadyfortheinputs.Refertothetablebelowforthepropercolorsofthewires touse.Onceyouhaveidentifiedthecorrectwirestouseyouwillneedtosplicethemandsoldersome speakerwiretothesplicedwires(seethelastpagefordetailedinstructionsonhowtospliceawire). Nextistowirethelinestothesubwoofers.Fortheselinesyouwillneedtophysicallycutthewiresfrom thestockamplifierinsteadofsplicingthembecauseyouwillnowbepoweringthesubwoofersfrom youraftermarketamplifier.Again,seethetablebelowforthecorrectwirecolors,andmakesureyou leftenoughslacktoreachtheaftermarketamplifier. Step4Gettingpowerfortheamp
Normallygettingpowerforanampisthehardestpartbecauseyouhavetocutthroughthefirewallanddealwithall that,butinthe3seriesBMWwaskindenoughtoputthebatteryrightinthetrunk.Allyouneedtodoisconnect thelargeredpowerwiretothepositiveterminalandrunittotheamplifier.However,thelineistoothicktogo underthecarpetdirectlytotheamp,soIchoosetogoupandoverthetrunkareareadon. 1. Thefirststepistoremovethebatterycoverandgainaccesstothebatterycompartment. 2. Onceyouhavegainedaccesstothebatteryyouneedtogetawrenchandconnecttheendofthered positivecabletotheboltshowninthepicturebelow.(note:thecoverwontcloseallthewaywiththenew wireconnected)

3. Tapethelooseendofthewireverygoodtopreventitfromshortingagainsttheframewhileyouare runningittotheothersideofthecar.

4. ChasethecableupthesideofthecarunderthetrunkpaneltowardsthesteelUchannelthatholdsthetop ofthetrunkcompartmenttogether.Onceyougettothechannel,chasethewireallthewayacrossthetrunk totheothersideandpullanyexcessslackthrough,seethepicturesbelowformoreinformation.

6. Theonlywirelefttorunisthenegativepowerwirefortheamp,forthisoneallyouneedtodoisconnect oneendtothenegativeblocklocatedonthedriversideofthetrunk,seethepictureformoreinformation.

Step5Testing
Atthispointyouareessentiallydonewithallthehardpart,andyouarereadytobegintesting. 1. Connectallthewires:subleft,subright,inputleft,inputright,remote,positivepowerandnegativepower totheamplifier. 2. Putthestockamplifierplugbackin. 3. Reconnectthepositivecabletothebatteryandturnthegainontheamplifierallthewaydown. IMPORTANT:WhenyoureconnectthebatteryandstartthecarforthefirsttimetheECUwillgocrazyforabouta minuteandtellyouthatalmosteverysysteminthecarhasmalfunctioned.Thisisanormaltestprocedurethatthe carrunsthroughwhenitispoweredbackon,startthecar,shutthecaroff,removethekey,andreinsertthekeyto clearalltheerrors. 4. Startthecarandputonsomemusic,youwillinitiallynoticethatthereisnobassatall,thisisnormalasthe gainsettinghasbeenturnedallthewaydown. 5. Slowlyincreasethegaincontroluntilyouhavereachedasuitablelevelforthesubwoofers. 6. Furtheradjustmentcanbefoundintheownersmanualforyouramplifier. 7. Ifeverythingworkedandyouaregettingsoundyoucanmoveon,ifnot,beginretracingyourstepsand checkingconnections. Gentlypeelinsulationoffthewirebetweenthecutmarksandusetherazorbladetocleanupanyloose material. 5. Twisttheadditionalwirearoundthenewlystrippedsegmentandsolderitinplace. 6. Tapeitupwithelectricaltapeandyouredone.
