SOSScholarship Opportunities for Seniors April 26, 2012

GENERAL INFORMATION 1. If you have filed a FAFSA (financial aid form for college) and are planning to attend a college or university in Indiana, you MUST check your eStudent account at the State Student Assistance Commission of Indianas website (www.ssaci.in.gov/estudent/) to be sure that all the information is correctly reported. 1. At the bottom of the above website, click on the blue eStudent logo. 2. You will need to establish an eStudent account. Follow those directions. 3. When you open up your file you will see either a GREEEN sign with a message that all is well OR a RED sign indicating a problem. 4. Check out each of the sections (award notification, change college choice, student information, award history, and application history) for accuracy. 5. In the section marked Application History. You will see your FAFSA information. Review the information for accuracy. 6. Scroll down to the fifth item, Application Status, and read the message. If it is correct, GREAT! Double check the entire account for accuracy. This is a very important part of the financial aid process. Failure to check this information could prevent you from being considered for the Frank OBannon Grant funds even if you might otherwise be eligible. Check the website before May 15, 2012 because all corrections must be made by May 15, 2012 and there are no provisions for late submissions after 3:00 p.m. on May 15, 2012 NEW SCHOLARSHIPS The Fisher Racing Scholarship should arrive by Friday, April 27, 2012. Candidates must include a list of extracurricular activities (service, athletic, academic, etc.) in which the applicant participated at Roncalli High School as well as within the greater community. An essay must also be attached. The essay is: How do you think your extra-curricular activity/activities will allow you to grow and/or help you in your future? Its not the quantity of activities that count, but the true quality. Submissions will be due to Mrs. Hall by May 10, 2012 at 3:15 p.m. PREVIOUSLY ANNOUNCED SCHOLARSHIPSRead carefully as deadline dates are quickly approaching. 1. Tylenol will offer ten $10,000 scholarships and 30 $5,000 scholarships as part of their Future Care Scholarship program. Applicants should be students planning to pursue a health care career and who have demonstrated leadership, community service, and strong academics. Additional information and the application can be found at https://www.facebook.com/TylenolScholarship The deadline for applications to be received is May 31, 2012. 2. Military families: ThanksUSA is a non-profit tax exempt charitable organization focused on thanking American troops. Annually the organization offers as many as 500 scholarships worth $3,000 for undergraduate students whose parent has been on active duty for a minimum of 18o days since September 11, 2001. Dependents must have a 2.0/4.0 scale. The scholarship program opens April 1 and the deadline is May 15. Financial need, academic performance, leadership, and community service are all considered in the review of applicants. 3. The dependents of disabled American veteran are eligible for a remission of fees and free tuition at state universities in Indiana. For more information on this program www.in.gov/dva.index.htm Grandchildren may also qualify for this program. 4. The Robert Springer/Cloyd Julian Scholarship recognizes relatives of George Washington High School graduates or relatives of former staff members. Criteria for the selection includes: 50% academic performance and College Board scores, 30% community and other school activities, and 20% athletic participation. Applications must be postmarked by April 20, 2012. Application information can be found in the guidance carousel. 5. The Dr. Donald King Scholarship is available to seniors with strong Christian leadership, solid academic performance, and financial need. Applications are due before May 1 and are available in the guidance carousel. This is a $1,000 award and they will select two recipients. 6. The Watercolor Society of Indiana offers the James C. Lentz Memorial Scholarship to students who plan to pursue a degree in either fine arts or arts education. This is a $1,000 award and the submission must include the completed application, portfolio, artists statement, letter of recommendation, and a transcript. The deadline to submit the information is May 1. The application and additional information is available from Mr. Stratton (room 017) or the guidance carousel. 7. The Cecil Head Fine Arts Scholarship is based on submitted art work to an award committee. Each student may submit up to five original works of art. The ability to work in different media is important. Fashion design and mechanical drawing submissions will not be considered. Additional criteria are also specified in the handout which is available directly from Mr. Stratton in the art room. Submission must arrive by April 30th. Scholarship awards range from $100 to $4,000.
