Descendants of Thomas Gubtail-The Grand Manan
Branch
Generation No. I
1. Thomas! Gubtail was born 1650 in Wales (Source: Mildred L. Jacobson, Guptill Genealogy, Ye Galleon
Press Fairfield, Washington), and died 1695 in Portsmouth, NH. He married Mary Abbott, daughter of Walter
j )tt and Sarah Steward.
Notes for Thomas Gubtail:
THIS THOMAS IS MY 8TH GREAT GRANDFATHER:
"The first record of the Guptill(Gubtail) name in this country is ofThomas Gubtail, who may have been born in
England, Scotland orWales!?! He was in Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1670and on the tax list in 1672. His wife,
Mary Abbot, born about 1652 was the daughter of Walter and Mary (Or possibly Sarah) of Portsmouth. They
received a deed ofa log house and 1/2 acre from her mother and stepfather, Henry Sherbourne (from the Genealogy
Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire) in 1680. Thomas was alive in 1686 but had certainly died before 1696,
when his widow married William Caverly. She was alive as late as 1732 when she and her two Caverly children sold
rights in the estate ofher second husband. There are no birth records for Guptill children, but it is assumed that the
following, all mentioned in that area, were children ofThomas and Mary (Abbott) Guptill. Only Nathaniel is known to
have had male heirs."
Taken from "One Line of Guptill Descent" compiled by Claude W. Barlow, Ph.D. Worcester, Mass, 1963. Copy
found at N.E. His Gen, Boston, Mass.
Reference to Gubtails being from Wales was found in several sources; one is the following: "Fond Memory" by Myra
Smith Earl (published by her family twenty years after her death.)
page 21 :"1 think you should know something about all these ancestors, the kind of lives they lived and the houses in
which they lived them. The Guptills were Welsh, the name originally having been Gubtail. As you will see, they and
the Pendletons married and intermarried, Pendleton sons marrying Guptill daughters and Guptill sons marrying
Pendelton daughters."
L....-dren of Thomas Gubtail and Mary Abbott are:

f_ daughter ofBenjamin Isselton.
Notes for Nathaniel Gubtail:
THIS NATHANIEL IS MY7TH GREAT GRANDFATHER:
Quoted from "Early Families of Gouldsboro, Maine" by Muriel Sampson Johnson:"Nathaniel Gubtail was born in
Wales(I,Kerry Kosky, do not believe he must have been born in Portsmouth) but was not baptized until 11
Nov 1716 when he was living in Berwick, Maine. He died sometime after 1762.
Nathaniel married MaryIsselton, daughter ofBenjamin Isselton, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire."
"amason"
Tax abated in 1713, living in Berwick, bp with wife Mary &4 children on 11 Nov 1716
Quoted from"The Guptill Genealogy" by Grace Guptill and Zula Guptill HoImes:
Nathaniel Guptill, who was probably a brother of Thomas Guptill, was born about 1680. Rev. Sinnett says he was
born in England but I believe the evidence is that he was born in or near Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He was living
in Sou th Berwick, Maine in 1762. Noyes states that Nathaniel married twice and there seems to be support in that he
married Mary Issalton in Portsmouth in the North Church on September 30,1708 and his first child Mary was born
in 1705. The records of the old church ofSouth Berwick give the names ofthe parents ofthe Guptill children that
were baptized there as Nathaniel Guptill and Mary. After this Nathaniel seem to have owned quite a lot ofland at
Kittery, Maine which was near his old home at S. Berwick."
Quoted from Gen Dic ME &NH: "CoupIe settled in Sou th Berwick, Maine where children were baptised in Berwick
Church 11 Nov 1716."
Children of Nathaniel Gubtail and Mary Isselton are:
7 I.
Alice
3

MORE ONMYFAMILY
Ifyoll have found this page because you are a Guptill relation - WELCOME - we are so glad you
found us!!!
The information contained in this Family Tree Maker site comes directly from my Family Tree
Maker program for Windows.
I have updated the report section to include the information given to me by the many Guptill
descendants who have contacted me thru this page and also myGeoCities page.
If you are looking for someone, please email me and I will pass your query along to other Guptills.
Someone may be researching your branch!!!
Most of the information I have been adding is from "Early Families of Gouldsboro, Maine" for those
who do not have the book. Please keep in mind there are errors in the book; just as you and I make
errors in our notes. Ifyou add data from this or any other source, be sure to cite it as a transcription
from the source.
I have also begun quoting from "Fond Memory" by Myra Smith Earl who lived in Winter Harbor,
Maine in the 1880's. Her grandmother was Elmira Guptill Pendleton. The book has much
information on the Guptills and the Pendletons including Stillman Guptill b.1797 and Susan
(Whitaker)Guptill b. 1803. Their pictures are on page 20! I have put their pictures on another
homepage - see the message above to click.
When I was in York, Maine in May, I photocopied pages from "Maine Families in 1790", Vols 1-4.
I have been adding this information and citing the source.
When I add data from Vital Records I will so note the source. Please contact me when you find
inconsistencies and/orerrors. Thanks, Kerry

I began researching my father's family because I was told we were French Canadian and the name
was changed from St. John.
It took only 5 minutes at my local Family History Center to prove both were myths!!
The first Guptills (the name was then GUBTAIL) entered the U.S. at Portsmouth, New Hampshire
in the late 1600' s. There is considerable discussion regarding the origin ofboth Thomas' place ofbirth
and the name Gubtail. Many say Wales and others say Scotland. Will we ever know for sure?
I have information beginning with THOMAS GUBTAIL born about 1650 through to PAGE
DOUGLAS GUPTILL, JR (1922-1958) who was my father. THIS BRANCH of the family moved
from Portsmouth, NH to South Berwick, Maine to Gouldsboro/Winter Harbor, Maine to Grand
Manan Island, Canada to Machiasport, Maine to Essex, Connecticut.
We have discovered recently that the name is NOT as UNCOMMON as we thought: There are
MANYofus in the US(Maine, NH, Mass, MN, WI, OR, WA, CA, AZ, CT, RI etc) Canada,
Australia and New Zealand.
We "Guptills" now have our own emailing list. Hyou would like to be added, send an email to me
and I will forward your message.
I am currently looking for information on my great grandmother, BERTHA M. SMITH
(GUPTILL). The birth certificate for one ofher children says she was born in Steuben, Maine in
1880. I have researched the Vital Records ofSteuben and surrounding towns, but have found nothing
on Bertha. If you have a BERTHA SMITH, who married JESSE GUPTILL, in your family I would
love to hear from you.
I will share any research I have done in Maine and Connecticut. I am especially interested in meeting
someone who has information from Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick, Canada.
I would love to hear from anyone researching or living on Grand Manan.

*8izabeth Thomas Cheney - mystery lady #1. There appears to be no
record of Bizabeth being from other Cheney fanlilies on Grand Manan.
However, I ran across a reference to her coming from Indian Island, an
important trading post close to Deer Island, Campobello and Eastpol1.
T ~ c o r d s incl ude her siblings but I cannot find the names of her
pe-..dts. I am seeking more information on her family
** Susan (Susanne Bancroft) - mystery lady #2 - The census of 1851 lists
her as being a "Lodger" at William's home (18 years of age). Judson L
was 15 years at this time. They later married. Susan also is not listed
as a member of other Grand ll/lanan Bancroft families. One note suggests
she came from Machias Others suggest that she came from Nova Scotia. I
am seeking information on Susan as well.
*** Lois Muriel (Guptill) McKay is my mother. She is 89 this spring and
as bright as can be. She was delighted when I told her about your web
site and the infolTIlation on it. Our family myt.h. was that the Gubtails

She has requested printed copies which I am to deliver forthwithl

from one of the first settlers at St. Stephen, N.B. He moved from
Machias and the connections and moves are very similar to those of the

for Benemct Amolc1 when he went up the Kennebec to attack Quebec in
1775.

Tax abated in 1713, living in Berwick, bp with wife Mary & 4 children on II Nov 1716
Quoted from"The Guptill Genealogy" by Grace Guptill and Zula Guptill Holmes:
Nathaniel Guptill, who was probably a brother of Thomas Guptill, was born about 1680. Rev. Sinnett says
he was born in England but I believe the evidence is that he was born in or near Portsmouth, New
Hampshire. He was living in South Berwick, Maine in 1762. Noyes states that Nathaniel married twice and
there seems to be support in that he married Mary lssalton in Portsmouth in the North Church on September
30, 1708 and his first child Mary was born in 1705. The records of the old church of South Berwick give the
names of the parents of the Guptill children that were baptized there as Nathaniel Guptill and Mary. After
this Nathaniel seem to have owned quite a lot of land at Kittery, Maine which was near his old home at S.
Berwick."
Quoted from Gen Dic ME & NH: "Couple settled in South Berwick, Maine where children were baptised in
Berwick Church 11 Nov 1716."

John Gubtail, who settled in Gouldsboro with his wife Abigail (Goodwin) in 1762, was the son of Nathaniel
and Mary. In 1852 Hilliard M. Sowle, who was Town Clerk of Gouldsboro, changed the spelling of the name
from "Gubtail" to "Guptill" in the town records and it was accepted as the family spelling. Guptill was used
herein. (Source: Gouldsboro Historical Society and Grand Manan Archives, Grand Manan Island, New

Hi Kerry:
Enclosed you will finally find a copy of the Grand Manan Historian which I promised many
months ago. I hope that this will be of interest and value to you. I am truly sorry about the delay.
My job has demanded more than usual attention over the last few months and many things we set
aside. I will send additional items as they come to the surface.
Sorry to hear about your crash. I recently went through the same thing fortunately, I had saved
my address book and other important stuff on a zip disk. I still haven't restored them all.
Cheers
Art MacKay
