Dear Residents, In these economic times, your Wayne County Parks offer some of the best bargains in the county. Most of the special events in the Wayne County Parks are free or have a minimal charge. There are no entry fees to Wayne County Parks and they are open year round. The Chandler Park Family Aquatic Center is one of the most economical water parks in the state! There are some wonderful new attractions that are coming to Wayne County Parks this spring and summer: Canoe rentals at Newburgh Lake in Livonia Segway rentals at Nankin Mills (next to the administrative building) Kayak rentals at Elizabeth Park in Trenton Check out page 6 for details on these new family friendly activities. In addition, there is a new shelter in the dog park, a new restroom facility at Sumac Point and a picnic shelter at Nankin Mills Park. Did you know that our naturalists offer nature and history programs year round for schools, scouts, homeschoolers and families? By adding a monthly calendar to the brochure this year, we hope that you will find programs for everyone in your family. Staying active year round promotes health and wellness. Here are 10 fitness tips about Wayne County Parks that you may not have known:

There are 10 fitness stations along Hines Drive and 10 stations at Elizabeth Park in Trenton to assist with stretching and enhance flexibility.

Kayaking at Elizabeth Park or canoeing at Newburgh Lake is a great way to exercise. One hour of paddling can help you burn up to 400 calories!

Biking six miles during Saturday in the Park will help you build strength and muscle.

If you play 18 holes at Warren Valley Golf course, you will have walked approximately five miles!

If you run the Lightfest 8K Run in November, you will burn approximately 500 calories.

Beach volleyball is available at Nankin Mills Park in Westland and Northville Recreation Area in Northville.

Crosswinds Marsh offers six miles of trails for the public to enjoy year round.

Nursery School Olympics
10:30 am at Elizabeth Park, Trenton Wayne County Parks is hosting this event for tomorrows champions. Events include Marshmallow Shot Put, Big Wheel Grand Prix (children must bring their own big wheel or bike), Paper Plate Discus, Diaper Derby, Toddler Trot and more! Children ages 5 and younger and their parents are welcome. Cosponsored by Trenton Parks and Recreation.

Noon 9:00 pm at Hines Park Warrendale Picnic Area, Dearborn Heights Polka music enthusiasts will love dancing to the music. Ethnic dancers in authentic Polish costumes will also perform. Food concessions and a beer tent will be available.

Mud Day

10:30 am 1:30 pm at Hines Park - Nankin Mills Area, Westland Join us for the 25th anniversary of MUD DAY! We will kick off the event with a live show from Radio Disney AM 910 from 10:30 11:30 am and blasting into the mud at 11:45 am! The Westland Fire Department will be on hand to hose off all the muddy kids! Co-sponsored by ITC Holdings and Community Alliance Credit Union. For ages 12 and younger.

Saturday in the Park
9:00 am 3:30 pm Six miles of Hines Park (Hines Drive) will be closed to traffic every Saturday for the public of all ages to run, walk, skate, or cycle safely. Hines Drive will be closed from the Warrendale Picnic Area (west of Outer Drive) to the Nankin Mills Area (near Ann Arbor Trail). Parking is available at Warrendale and Nankin Mills picnic areas.

Nature Fest

Wayne County Country Fest on the River


1:00 pm Dark at Elizabeth Park, Trenton Gallop down to Elizabeth Park for the first annual Country Fest on the River! This is destined to be the premier country event of the summer with five regional country acts on stage throughout the day. Call the Parks office for a complete entertainment schedule.

1:00 pm 4:00 pm at Crosswinds Marsh, Sumpter Township This nature event will feature live entertainment, nature crafts and games face painting and free canoeing. See bald eagles on a nature hike led by our naturalists. Meet live creatures at the animal tent and live animal show. Contests for the kids include a fishing contest, a scavenger hunt, a nature photo contest and a nature drawing/painting contest. Please bring your best nature photo, painting or drawing to be judged. Contest registration begins at 1:00 pm and prizes will be awarded to the winners of each contest at 4:00 pm. Fishing poles available to use.

Fishing Derby

8:00 - 11 am at Hines Park - Waterford Bend Area, Northville All kids ages 12 and younger are welcome to have some fishing fun and win prizes. The Rouge River will be stocked with rainbow trout and a casting contest will take place. All anglers need to bring their own equipment and bait. This event is co-sponsored by the Vietnam Veterans of America Plymouth Chapter 528 and Northville Parks and Recreation. Register on site starting at 7:30 am.

Native American Heritage Day


The North American Indian Association hosts a special Social Gathering that includes a drumming circle, dancers in beautiful regalia, artisans displaying, demonstrating and selling crafts and Native American food available for purchase. The whole family will enjoy this celebration of Michigans first people. Bring a lawn chair and we recommend an umbrella for shade.

Wayne County Lightfest

7:00 -10:00 pm (closed Dec. 25) Hines Drive Visit the Midwests longest drive-through holiday light display for four miles of colorful lights with a fee of $5/car. Enter off Merriman Road, between Ann Arbor Trail and Warren Avenue in Westland. For more information on this holiday spectacular, call the Parks office.

Family Holiday Fest & Mill Lighting
4:00 6:00 pm at Nankin Mills Interpretive Center, Westland $6 per child, $4 per adult for crafts and games (4:00-5:15 pm). No charge for Santa visit and tree lighting (5:15 6:00 pm). Co-sponsored by Friends of Wayne County Parks An old-fashioned celebration featuring seasonal games and crafts you can make and take home to decorate your tree. The second part of the program is free, and includes an outdoor community Mill Lighting and Sing-a-long with an indoor visit from St. Nick. Refreshments provided. This is the 25th year the Friends have held this event!

Bike Through the Lights

7:00 pm at Hines Park Merriman Hollow Area, Westland Due to popular demand, Wayne County Parks is now offering bike riders a chance to bike through the lights before it opens to the public. Halloween Forest Fun Hike


Hikes beginning at 6:00 pm, 6:30 pm, 7:00pm, 7:30 pm, Register for one time. All ages welcome $6.00 per child, $4.00 per adult for Wayne County residents. Out of county residents: $7.00 per child, $5 per adult A guided night hike will introduce you to some of our not-so-scary funny forestdwellers. Hikes begin on the grounds of Nankin Mills and last about an hour, so dress for the weather. After your hike, you will meet amazing live creatures from around the world during an indoor presentation.

Elizabeth Park Marina


The Elizabeth Park Marina provides a full range of seasonal offshore fishing along the Detroit River. Elizabeth Park Marina and Boat Launch provides four launching and loading wells, and a 52-boat mooring facility with utility hook-up, pump station and shower facility. Kayaking at Elizabeth Park
Join Riverside Kayak Connection for kayak rentals at our beloved Elizabeth Park in Trenton. Tour the scenic canals of Michigans first county park. Catch a glimpse of ducks, blue heron, turtles and more wildlife as you glide under historic bridges linking the park to the City of Trenton. Enjoy all the fun that kayaking has to offer. Have a group of friends, family reunion, and class reunion? Call RKC to make arrangements for larger groups. We can add a whole host of activity to your group event such as tour guides and nature guides. Inkster Valley Golf Course


Opened in May of 1998, the Harry Bowers design incorporates over 100 acres of wetland within its 400-acre surroundings. Inkster Valley is an 18-hole, par 72 Championship Course, with water coming into play at 14 of its holes. The multi-million dollar public course creates an up north setting without the long drive. Features a grille and offers a pro-shop and professional golf instruction.

Warren Valley Golf Course


Designed in 1922 by world-renowned Scottish golf architect, Donald Ross, Warren Valley was one of the first golf facilities in the state of Michigan. This 36-hole course, West (par-71) and East (par-72), features rolling terrain and mature landscape along the banks of the middle Rouge River. The clubhouse opened in 1994 and features a pro-shop, Ross Room Bar and Grille (seats 75) and a banquet center (capacity 300) Warren Valley is an excellent choice for wedding receptions, special events and outings. Golf Fee Range: Warren Valley $12-$40 Inkster Valley $17-$49 Dress: Appropriate golf attire is required at all times and soft spikes only. Food and Beverage: Only food and beverages purchased on site will be permitted on the golf course. The clubhouses have a variety of food and beverage choices. Canoeing & Paddle Boating at Newburgh Point


Back by popular demand, Wayne County Parks is thrilled to partner with Heavner Canoe for the Newburgh Point Paddle Concession. Bring the entire family for a relaxing paddle around Newburgh Lake. The Family Aquatic Center at Chandler Park is the perfect place for recreation and celebrations for all ages.
Known as Wayne Countys premier waterpark, it is the friendliest waterpark in Michigan! The Family Aquatic Center at Chandler Park is an oasis snuggled into the eastside of Detroit. Children can cool down under our special spray fountains and wade in their own pool playland. Teens and adults can tube ride or body slide down our two super-sized water slides. The whole family can catch the ultimate tan on our sun deck and spend long summer days wading in our exciting wave pool. Join park mascots Wally the Whale and Dolly the Dolphin for special events held throughout the summer. Special entertainment and activities are planned to give guests the ultimate waterpark experience. Bands, luaus, swim lessons and water aerobics classes are just some of the events guests will enjoy. Swim Lessons for All Ages!


Its never too late to learn how to swim! Participants of all ages can learn how to swim or increase their ability in our swim lessons. The 45 minute swim lessons are held weekdays at the Family Aquatic Center at Chandler Park. The two-week sessions begin in June and end in August. Pre-registration is required!

Host your group outing at the Family Aquatic Center! We offer special admission packages for groups of 15 or more. Let our 22,000 square feet of beautiful landscaping become the backdrop of a memorable time with your church, school, professional, reunion or other occasion gathering. Crosswinds Marsh Wetland Interpretive Preserve


Crosswinds Marsh offers interpretive programs that feature hands-on activities, hikes, games and crafts to foster fun and informative learning experiences. The Parks Millage made these programs possible. Thank you for your patronage! Crosswinds Marsh is a 1,050 acre Wetland/Wildlife Interpretive Preserve which offers a unique opportunity to observe a variety of wildlife species in their natural wetland environments. Crosswinds Marsh offers a blend of wetlands, wildflower meadows and upland forests, attracting over 200 species of birds, 30 species of mammals and a variety of reptiles, amphibians and insects.

DIRECTIONS: Take I-275 to Will-Carleton Road (Exit #8). Take Will-Carleton/Oakville Waltz Road west 3 -miles to Haggerty Road. Take Haggerty Road -mile north to park entrance on the west side of the road.

Advance registration and prepayment are required for home school, family and scout programs. School field trip and outreach program payments are due the day of the program.

Contests for the kids include a fishing contest, a scavenger hunt, a nature photo contest and a nature drawing/ painting contest. Please bring your best nature photo, painting or drawing to be judged. Contest registration begins at 1:00 pm and prizes will be awarded to the winners of each contest at 4:00 pm. Fishing poles available to use.

Scout Badge Workshops


Crosswinds Marsh offers two-hour workshops designed to meet badge requirements for the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. Badges are not provided, but are available at your local scout council office. Scout Badges Programs are $6.00 per scout. No charge for leaders. Scout programs are offered April-October on Wednesdays from 4:30-6:30 pm and Saturdays from 10:00 am 3:00 pm. Badges can be scheduled for June-August upon request. Registration for all Scout Badges begins Tuesday, March 6, 2012. PRE-REGISTRATION AND PREPAYMENT IS REQUIRED. Only cash or checks are accepted. Please make checks payable to Wayne County Parks. No refunds are given unless Crosswinds cancels the program. Group size is limited to 30 scouts per badge. scout Badge Workshops


Workshop activities designed to meet badge requirements for Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. Workshops last two hours and are held at Nankin Mills Interpretive Center on Saturdays during the school year. For specific program information, visit waynecountyparks.org. PLeAse NoTe: Specific dates are not scheduled for Girl scout Badges, but we are happy to schedule a program for your group. A minimum of 15 scouts is required to run a workshop. We offer some past badge topics or can provide a program for the new badge requirements upon request. Call 734-261-1850 to schedule a workshop. For Cadette workshops, add $1.00 to fees on page 20. one adult required per every five scouts Badges are NoT provided by Wayne County Parks, but are available at your scout council office. Halloween forest fun Hike


$6.00 per child, $4.00 per adult Out of county residents: $7.00 per child, $5.00 per adult Register for one time: 6:00 pm, 6:30 pm, 7:00 pm, 7:30 pm Arrive 15 minutes early All ages welcome, but trail is not stroller friendly A guided night hike will introduce you to some of our not-so-scary funny forestdwellers. Hikes held on the grounds of Nankin Mills and last about an hour, dress for the weather. After your hike, you will meet amazing live creatures from around the world during an indoor presentation. In the event of rain, the hike will be moved indoors.

4:00 6:00 pm, All ages welcome $6.00 child, $4.00 per adult for Crafts and Games (4:00 5:15 pm) No charge for Santa Visit and Tree Lighting only, sponsored by Friends of Nankin Mills (5:15 6:00 pm) An old-fashioned celebration featuring seasonal games and crafts you can make and take home to decorate your tree. The second part of the program is free, and includes an outdoor community Mill Lighting and Sing-a-long with an indoor visit from St. Nick. Refreshments provided. This is the 25th year Friends have held this event!
