Find an expression for the force experienced by a current carrying conductor in a magnetic field. State Biot-Savart law for the magnetic field due to a current element and use it to obtain the magnetic field due to an infinite, thin and straight wire carrying a current I. A charge of 4104 C moves at 15 revolutions per second in a circle of radius 10 cm. What is the magnetic flux density at the center of the circle? 2. 8+8+4

[3] a) Describe the nature of X-ray spectra. Distinguish between continuous and characteristic spectra. How can the lowest wavelength limit in the continuous X-ray spectra be explained? 6

Distinguish between Fresnel and Fraunhofer classes of diffraction. How does the intensity expression of Fraunhofer diffraction due to a plane transmission grating differ from that due to a single slit diffraction? Find the necessary condition for obtaining the principal maxima of different orders and their intensities in case of grating. A plane transmission grating having 6000 lines per cm is used to obtain diffraction from sodium light in the second order. Find the angular separation between the two sodium lines having wave lengths 5890 and 5896 , respectively. 8+8+4 2 7.
